As far as gaming goes, nobody is buying an iPad to play Fight Control and other 99 cent apps, and if the successful Appstore can't get people to buy more expensive, full fledged games, how can it for the iPad? I t doesn't even have the hardware to go much furter than the 3GS if it wanted.

I see this as more of a web browsing and e-mail device. I think you would look pretty silly on a bus or subway moving this thing around while playing Shrek Cart or something like that.

Maybe it's just me and I'm too old to appreciate the games aspect.

Have people went under the hood to really see what its capable of though? I mean, good game developers really know how to push the limits of a machine.

This thread is going to look really dumb when gaming takes off on the iPad.

I guess you don't know much about the capabilities of other portable devices or you wouldn't make such a silly thread.

Yeah, Gizmodo, Engadget and Arsitechnica. It's weaksauce.

Why are you even a member of Macrumors? Here is a list of threads started by Palm Pimp:

http://forums.macrumors.com/search.php?searchid=19458243

He has started a dozen negative threads about the iPad since yesterday, and in general the only thread he has ever started that isn't intended to bash an Apple product are his posts about the Palm Pre.

I have reported your recent thread antics to the mods.

Most of the threads started in the last day or so are going to look dumb once people get one in their hands and see the true potential.

Is it the most ground-breaking device out there? No. Will it succeed? Yes, because not everyone is looking for a power-user friendly computer. A device that can browse the web, play some games, allow them to read their e-mail, etc. is going to be perfect for 80-90% of the people on the Internet today looking to have a portable device with a screen bigger than a phone.

I know I get frustrated often trying to read certain sites on my iPhone. The iPad will be a perfect fit for what I would want it to do. I don't need Quicken, or Photoshop, or Lightroom, or any other processor intensive program out there.

Did you even read my post? The iPad is an underpowered POS that can't possibly attract casual games since no one's spending $500 on a tablet for that, and it can't run games more powerful than NOVA. Dead in the water, like an old swamp rat.

I'm calling your bluff on this. I checked all three sites and no-one has any solid information. Post some links to real specs. I only read good things regarding graphics and general speed.

Now, this exercise did lead me to read this engadget editorial (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/editorial-engadget-on-the-ipad/), which is probably the most even handed, considered, interesting, insightful commentary I've read on the iPad.

Folks, the iPad has plenty of potential. There's plenty for Apple to expand on in both the hardware and software departments. Look how long the iPhone OS took to go from 1.0 to 3.1. Apple moves slowly, deliberately, and with a strategic view. They are in for the long haul. If they do it right, the iPad WILL be a huge success, in the long term. At the moment it is still embryonic, but Apple could see that they needed to get a start in this game or risk being a follower. This revision of iPad (S/W and H/W) gets their foot in the door, and they can start to build on it in time.

It's not for everyone just yet, and Apple is fine with that too. Early adopters will carry it until its ready to take on the world. If Apple had stopped at iPod Gen 1 (firewire, Mac only, no store) it would have been the failure that all predicted at the time. If they had stopped at iPhone 1.x (no 3G, no GPS, no video, no MMS, no cut/paste, and NO APPS STORE!) again, it would have generated some buzz but would never surge ahead of its rivals.

Sure, the iPad doesn't have any revolutionary tech inside, like the iPhone, or the (then) tiny HDD of iPod 1.0. From that point of view, it's a little premature. Apple's hand was forced. But it will build and build. If its decisions are as astute as most of the others its made in the last 8 years, the iPad will live up to Apple's hype. Right now, they are looking a little too earnest in their rhetoric. Its a hiccup, but one that they can easily overcome if they stick to the long term plan.

Good luck trying to view those sites without Flash. Take a trip to ESPN or Hulu, I hear they're popular, especially with average people.

I'm sorry, but what GAMES are you thinking should be able to play on this? HALO? COD: MW2? Madden 2010?

Dude, most LAPTOPS cannot even run those successfully.

If gaming is successful on the iPhone, then why can't it be successful on a larger, more powerful device?

Well, I have the ESPN app, so I'm covered there. Hulu doesn't interest me in the least, especially on my iPhone. Maybe it would be different on my iPad, but I usually prefer to watch my TV programs on my 50" TV. That's why I have a DVR.

But then again, I guess I'm not average.

Read my 1st post.

I did. What's your point? People are buying games that are $5 - $10 on the app store for iPod Touch/3GS. The iPad, regardless of what you seem to think, is more powerful than the 3GS with a higher-res screen, making it more capable in my opinion.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. How can the iPad be dead in the water when it hasn't even been released? It's a bold prediction at best, but I don't see it being true. Even if all it did was run iPhone games I doubt it would be dead, but with original content on the way, I doubt it that much more.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I was thinking along the same lines yesterday. Apple's success with the iphone and touch are a result of their unique combination of hardware/software & content. Sure iPad version 1.0 is a little underwhelming in some ways (but 0.5 inch thick and 1.5 pounds with 10" screen are still pretty impressive specification), but you have to start somewhere. Apple will continue to add Bell's and whistles on versions 2.0 and 3.0 and within a year it will start to get critical mass of unique content (e.g. games, iPad friendly news/magazines, applications, etc.). Within 2 years I suspect everyone will be singing the praises of this device as the ultimate convergence device for gaming/reading/watching.
