This was on spymac. Thought I would post it here since there are more users on these forums. It looks much better in this picture.

What is wrong with the current case? Sure it may be 4 years old design wise, but whats wrong with it? it's still the most functional case in the industry, there's not much, if anything I would change about it. I just wonder why everyone wants a completely new enclosure.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it =)

I don't really care what it looks like; what matters to me is whats inside. :D

Mr. Anderson

I'm more worried about the inside too, but there was all the hype about a new enclosure and I was just hoping something would come along and make us all say 'Wow!'

This isn't it. Its the old design, which is fine, just not anything to get excited about.

it may not be the radical redesign that many were anticipating, but from the disucssions with insiders it does sound as if the case redesign is more significant than the previous remodels. many of the changes are just not so abundantly obvious. the two drives required a large change, the latch has been reenginerred as well. yes these may seem like small changes compared to what we were expecting but they do represent a real and productive change, not just the superficial change that one may immediatly think has been performed when looking at these images.

and hopefully the changes under the hood will be exciting enough so that apple could drop the guts in a burlap sack and we would still be glad to rush out and drop $3k at the cashier's counter to take home are g4 burlap sack.

One thing I personally would like to see change are the handles on the bottom. They don't fit with my cpu holder under my desk. It's too curved for the flat holder. I suppose I could cut the holder down a bit, but that's a real pain in the arse. Even if I unscrewed the handles, the curve still causes a problem. Anyway, I don't care that much about the looks of the computer since I'm going to shove it under the desk. But then again if it was really phat looking I might make room on the top.

That thing is damn ugly. I don't think that the Apple Design Team would ever live it down if they released something like that. Bring on the TiMac!:D

i thought the firewire ports were gonna be open? Someone probably just rendered that puppy....we'll see how long it'll take Apple to bring down the picture

Ok people, remember to download the picture before Apple start crying about it

As always, is a matter of getting use to it, the first G3 for me was and is ugly, blue version seems better, sometimes even better than the actual enclosures.

When the first iMac cem out I thought they were uglie (too much retro for me).

The only computer that I really like ata glance is the new iBook, I even think the 15" version looks better than the 17".

The eMac looks like a mentally challenge computer. The Ti looks like a PC, the iBook looks like one of those tablets where you draw ustuff with the two kwobs on the sides. G3 powerbook looks like Batman stuff (I like them), and that is it.

Lest there be any confusion, this is an artist rendering. It is labeled as such on the site. A SpyMac contributor posted this and other images to show what the "case" looks like.

Don't get too excited.

Update: Earlier Photoshopped versions of the "new case" were posted on SpyMac to show visitors what it looked like. This is a new one. The contributor doesn't specifically call this a "photograph" of a real case. By not labeling it as an artist rendering, he leaves it to the viewer to infer what he wants.

another thing to note is that our insider apple58 or whatever his name was mentioned that the photo that this photorender was modeled after was not the final design but represented something earlier than what he saw. i took this to mean that the leaked photo was both an earlier model and something that wasnt even completely assembled. the metal plate over the drives looks like it is missing a face plate of some sort. this whole situation reminds me of the photos of the original g4 that were leaked that had the case lacking the plastic sides, case looked pretty awkward without those plastics sides.

A new product shot of the new PowerMac enclosure. The URL was sent to us by a user:

It is presently hosted on Apple's servers, and I expect will be taken down momentarily.

Looks pretty genuine to me.

It does look alot better than the previous photo that was circulating.

I was really hoping though that Apple would finally retire this case. It's way overdue for a redesign.

I just don't like the speaker placement on the top, maybe if it was upsidedown...
then the vents would also be facing up.

A while back someone was flashing some rendurings they had at another site. This one was included about 5 or 6 months ago. Seeing these in more than one place, put a bit more - believe-it-when-I-see-it feeling in my head. Glad we have people that enjoy the rumor mill, cause hey thats what its all about!

Since there are two of these threads:confused: I might as well post it here too:

The speaker looks wierd on the top, what about this computer upside down, then the vents would be facing upwards which would work better since heat rises.

ya know... im usually the first one to say wow maybe this is real but lets examine the picture. crank up your resolution. its obviously not a photgraph. the "drive bays" look awfully like the mouse/trackpad button on the powerbook g4. look at it real close. its one right side up and another one upside down on top of it. the powerbutton is cut and paste onto the picture as well. if you look at the shading, the front of the case would be concave and not flat. nuh uh... not a real picture. i would bet on seeing a white enclosure much like the emacs shell but nothing radically different. too many people are happy with the design.

let me know if anyone sees any other glaring obvious fake parts of this picture. :p

G4scott
Jul 30, 2002, 10:07 PM
You can put as many vents on the top, because heat rises, but you still need vents on the bottom for cool air to enter the case.

It seems that the Apple product line is going all white. The iMac, with its white body and silver neck/logo, the eMac, and now, it looks like the PowerMac. The iBook is half way there, but there is no silver logo/trim.

I think the case looks good, though. It is simple and elegant. It looks better than the original G4's in my opinion. But hey, it's what's inside that counts...

Ok, I think that this design rocks.

I tell you why,
There is a thread going on here, speculating a quad-G4 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php3?threadid=8506)(again!)
Somewhat in the middle is a link provided by Sun baked to a post from somebody at arstechnica. here (http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=8300945231&m=9010915074&r=6260982425#6260982425)
I feel like he comes up with too many details for making all this up.

Then the puzzle fits, a quad G4 = more heat, we had a thread going on about a very large heatsink.
Extra cooling provided by the new new holes in the enclosure.

oh well, even if it is rumor, an PS pict. It would be cool to see Apple release something that really rocks.
quad-G4 @ 1,2 - 1,4 Ghz.

does look smaller, which is good. but was hoping w/ other lines going rectangular, p/m side would follow suit. i, too, hope these are misdirection.

now, the conundrum is... buy? rent? lease?

i could buy an older machine, perhaps a dualie 533 to get me thru and see what happens in JAN, or as rumor has it, FEB-APR.

well, guess we're 2 weeks away from finding out (hopefully!) and then we'll be able to tell more.

still hoping for something like this:
<http://www.applele.com/powerfulmac4_a.jpg>
or even beboxenish:
<http://www.applele.com/powerfulmac3_a.jpg>
or even better this
<http://www.applele.com/powerfulmac_r7a.jpg>
which is just brilliant. cd/dvd hidden, easy to do either orientation.

Mr. Anderson
Jul 31, 2002, 08:58 AM
ha, that applele site has some nice designs - I wouldn't mind seeing some of those - but I'm betting we won't see anything like those - they look nice, but they would be a bit pricey to build.

There wouldn't happen to be an english version of that site?

By everyones past experience, I'm sure we can all be rest assured, that this pic is BOGUS.

Reason being, it is still there. We all know that Apple actually does watch the rumor sites, and because they are really good at spotting mis-information, they do attack rapidly.

Oh well, nothing to lose sleep over. Besides, Anticipation is the best part of the Keynote, or finding out just before the keynote what is to be released and to see if what you found out was true. Finding out waaay before hand doesn't even make you feel like you had wind in your sails to begin with.

How about insted of apple spending millions of $$$ to redesign the pawermac case, you spend a little $$$ and buy yourself a new desk:D

Jul 31, 2002, 01:25 PM
I don't like the handles either, they just make a hassle. I don't really care what it "looks like" as long as you can still flip down the side.

I love that, makes upgrades really easy. The pic is based on that leaked PDF, you can tell because of the front air intakes. I think it's a kind of racing car design.

Hemingray
Jul 31, 2002, 02:10 PM
The air intakes are also on the bottom for a reason. The turbine is right behind that followed by the processor with the WHOA!!!! Freakin' big heat sink..... sink.... SIIIIINK.....! .....SINKY-SINKY-SINKY-SINKY... erm, sorry. :D

(10 points for whoever figures out what that was from. ;) )

For that re-mockup with the vents on top, that would be useless. Sure, hot air rises, but that's the INTAKE you just moved to the top! Your processor would be frying eggs by now.

...sink.

At first glance it seems ugly (granted this is probably not the "real thing"), I hope this is one of those designs which grows on you with time. Even so, I really wouldn't care so long as it came with a dual 1.4GHz and DDR ;)
