The upcoming Arrandale CPUs look nice, but they will not be spec'd as high as the Sandy Bridge procs after that. I can't allow myself to buy an inferior product in good conscience. Does anyone else feel this way?

Gee, with an attitude like that, you'll be waiting the rest of your life to get the 'latest and greatest'.

It's bad enough waiting for Arrandale. . . So no I don't agree, I wouldn't be able to live knowing I'd have to wait any longer then another month.

The successor of Haswell shall be interesting, 12 cores minimum with speeds up to x GHz.
But it's still 5 years to go, and I think I can use my iBook G3 that long, as it has almost the same specs anyway.

Good lord...just pull the plug and buy a computer. At this rate, you are going to be waiting until you die.

I'm delighting in the Arrandale delay, it might mean they won't update at all in the next couple months, which may slide the following update (Sandy Bridge) up!:D

...and the longer Arrandale is delayed, the longer my computer is the current model!!

AMD is coming back strong next year with their 32nm CPU. Instead of being equiped with an Intel GPU like Sandy Bridge, the CPU comes with a high performing GPU for GPGPU purposes that Intel will never be able to compete against. ( the IGP can do serious gaming looking by the specs of it )
Probably no hexacore for laptops, but a quad core with an IGP like that could be very interesting. :p
AMD is also coming with Turboboost on their current 6-core CPU's, so they probably will also be ported for their new 32nm next year. I'm not sure things will be as easy for Intel next year ;)

Showing my ignorance here, what sort of release date can we expect for Sandy Bridge to be available for production? I was considering picking up an Arrandale MBP, however I'm seriously considering holding off until my savings account will allow a 15" instead of 13" and if it will be around the time Sandy Bridge is released, all the better. (I'm a full-time student.)

Apple updates the laptops roughly twice a year, so if the Arrandales come soon, look for a late 2010 update again. Not sure if Sandybridge will be available then, but that is likely when the next bump will take place.

Wow, some people's sarcasm meters are seriously broken.
I do love this thread, though.

Nope. I know you're being sarcastic, but this isn't AT ALL the same comparison. If someone's spending their hard-earned money on something they don't have to have right away, and this "something" is within a 6 month or so update timeframe, it can be plausible to wait (it's probably even the SMARTER thing to do).
Sandy Bridge is too far away.
Not a similar situation.

2011.
But Sandy Bridge is very attractive for desktop market since octo-cores will be availabe. So a 16-core Mac Pro will probably be out next year :p

True, but Sandy Bridge is being focused on power efficiency. With a max TDP of 85W. I think Sandy Bridge will be a highly mobile processor.

If I decide to skip this incoming refresh, when I will be able to see the next one? Do you guys think that Apple is going to implement Sandy Bridge by then? My 2.5 years old MacBook Pro is in good condition so I can still use it for 1 to 2 years :P

OTOH, we may all find ourselves waiting for Sandy Bridge if Apple just up and skips Arrandale.

I heard from a guy who works at Apple that they are waiting for the 11nm Intel chips before updating the MBP.

Haswell's going to start at 22nm, then get shrunk to...? I can't imagine they'll go from 22nm straight to 11. maybe tock to 16, tick to whatever comes next, then tock to 11? yes i got the sarcasm
seriously, my current debate right now is between Ivy Bridge and Haswell. I promised myself I'd make my MBP last through university, which means spring 2012 for my next one. Will I be able to wait a little while for Haswell, or jump on whatever's available.....
definitely light peak by then, SSDs standard, all that fun stuff, right? Anyone want to speculate about what else will be available?

My old rig is getting a bit long in the tooth. I was hoping to finally get an update with Arrandale, but now I think I'll wait for the next step up. Do you think I should go with Sandy Bridge or wait for the Ivy Bridge refresh? Thanks.
