how many light sources? how long did it take to render (on what machine/software)?

radiosity is great, its just such a killer in render time.

it has 4 light sources, one above each sphere , it takes about 11 min to render in my TiBook 667 512Mb RAM with Cinema 4D, even its not at full radiosity accuracy level ( its on 20% of accuracy) u can get a nice result, thats one of the best features in Cinema, its render engine calculate Radiosity quite fast (Maxon says they have the fastest radiosity engine)

Beej, love the new avatar, would that by chance be from the desktops that I sent you?:D

Mr. Anderson
Aug 2, 2002, 08:07 AM
I wouldn't be able to get that speed from Lightwave - and the settings are different - and quite a pain really. You need to play around a bit to get the image to look good sometimes, which only means you waste a lot of time waiting for the test renders to finish. But you can store the radiosity settings if you do an animation - so it only renders once at full radiosity, banking the images as a UV map for they whole scene, and then its just raytracing for the other frames - only really works well if your lightsources aren't moving.

a bit wierd? I checked the page and your explanation is less than helpful. I'd like to see a better image to see how it was created - drawn, computer, openGL from a game.

duke, I can't seem to get a better image, since I can't just use the command-shift-3 for taking the image, and compying the image to Appleworks causes loss of quality.

I got this from a 3 or 4 minute video.

And if my explanation wasn't helpful, then you clearly have no idea how to check my explanation. I made it pretty clear.

>(duke)you need photoshop! but you could use iPhoto as well....

I'm using OS 9, as I said, so iPhoto will not work. Plus, even if the image was edited with Photoshop (which it was) it really wouldn't make much difference. The only way I could save the picture from the video was from copying the image from Quicktime to an Appleworks document.

>what was the video?
I have no idea what you're talkin'bout, muhahahahaha.

>(KC) I got a new desktop theme going. I also posted the same desktop, basically, in the alien thread. See if you can find out where I got it from.

I just want to see if anyone else knows it off the bat. If you can't, duke, fine. But don't be an immature cocky ass about it and say you have other things to do than to search and guess. I wouldn't have put up the whole guessing game thing if I knew that nobody had even seen the *cough* music video *cough*. But I know that there are people that have. As far as forums go macrumors kicks spymacs a$$, but, the spymac picture gallerys are very good, that's where I found this pic.
Go here (http://www.spymac.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2505&size=big) to get it, and while your there take a look around, there loads of top quality backgrouds to be had. As a matter of fact the picture on the right hand side of the screen is also from there.

Thanks. I certainly would be a lucky guy to live out there. Most (if not all) of the pictures were taken in British Columbia, along the coast more or less, with the exception of the two sunsets. Perhaps someday, I will live out there...

>what kind of camera were you using? ie, digital or film?

Took those with my CoolPix 800 (700? I can't remember...). Love the camera but it doesn't have enough zoom and some of the digital compensation (light, etc.) doesn't always work well. Sucks batteries like crazy too. I would love to do something with the pics (i.e. fotohaus, large prints) but I have a feeling the ~800 kb size (finest quality) may not be enough for most think

>what bugs me is when greens blame nader. e.g. michael moore... not exaclty "blame"... but they hint at it. the green campaign was all about how dems and reps are the same, and thus who cares which one of them gets in really...

I have to admit I could certainly sympathize with that view during the elections. But in all honesty, I think the one who was way out in left field (deep deep deep left) was Pat Buchanan. That guy worries me (one who takes thinking differently too far). In the end tho, I think Bush was probably the best leader for 9/11, despite my dislike for some of his policies.

Well I finally got some of the apps I've been waiting for - took for ever due to funding issues at work, so I'm all excited that except for one more (FlashMX - which should be here soon) I'll be able to use OSX full time.

So here's my current desktop

And like everyone else - AquaMon and AquaTerm would be nice to have it anyone happens to have a copy, email, or pm me.

Also, I just tried to chang my background and it didn't work, dragged a new image on the desktop control panel and it updated the thumbnail but not the desktop - anyone have any ideas abou that?

What's the file format? You might just need to browse directly to the file, or try logging out and then back in to "refresh" your System Prefs.

Ha, glad you like it. I just installed PS7 so I had to do something. Got the apple logo from a PDF on apple.com and opened it up in AI10 (another new app for me) and exported the vector to ps.

Its nice when new software works. Now for GoLive - but I might wait on that till tomorrow.

Ok, thanks for AquaMon - but even though I can get the system stats up on my screen I still can't get the icons background to fade - and there isn't a manual or any info in the readme about how to get that.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Maybe I'm confused - I was hoping to make the icons (on the left) have a transparent background - does this app do that?

Also, while I'm at it, what's the app that gets rid of the drop shadows on the windows?

You mean the dock? Then you want TransparentDock:
http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11295&db=mac

Try ShadowKiller for your drop shadows:

Rower_CPU

I don't use it anymore, for a couple of reasons:

1) I didn't really see much improvement in performance,
2) It gets difficult to differentiate windows without the drop shadows

Of course, mc68k loves it and says everyone should run it to turn off the "bloat" of OS X...but he's a big nerdy CS student.

ShadowKiller actually made a difference that was a immediately noticeable, much more responsive windows when moving and opening. I hope it keeps the system stable.

If your desktop doesn't refresh, you don't need to logout. Just forcequit (relaunch) the finder. It will show up then. I usually have so many apps open that I dont like logging out.

I tried a B&W G4 and a TiPB 400...neither one (to me) seemed much faster.

I might go back and see if it makes a difference on my current work machine (G4 450).

Turning off/on happens when you launch the app.

To trash it, delete the app, and remove it from your Login Items (if you choose to have it launch on startup).

King Cobra
Aug 7, 2002, 04:01 PM
Man, that does look like a cool app. I searched Altavista, versiontracker, and download.com and couldn't find it. Well done, Atomic[dawg]. :p

When I get home to NJ I'll try out the thing on my Cube.

Does this same app get rid of the tile pinstripes on the OS X menu at the top of the screen? If not, which app can do that and where can I get it?

Rower_CPU
Aug 7, 2002, 04:05 PM
I haven't heard of any app that turns off pinstriping, other than a theme.

You'd have to hack into the System to do that.

ahh ok, wasn't sure if it was a system wide type thing like the transparent dock... ie, not having to launch an app to have it show its effects..

perhaps will give it a shot. thanks for the info.
