Yep... I'm hanging out for it, but I think it will be on or after the 13th because of the rebate.

If we all wish really hard at the same time, do you think we might be able to make it happen sooner? :D

I'm not sure, but August 5th seems a little early. But, you never know, Apple can still surprise us, can't they?

Oh hell, let's hear it for an all optical system on a chip that runs over a thousand times faster than the current G4!

Ooops, I must be getting jaded!

Seriously though, I too, of course, hope for an x86 crushing system!!!

Hail to the Redskins! Oh, whoops, wrong forum.

...Late August, say, around the 24. I really don't think apple wants anything stealing Jaguars Glory, at least untill it's something that comes fully equiped with it and espeseally with the orders already being takin for it. I just can't see apple selling anything new without 10.2 installed.

They could still announce them early, and not ship until after Jaguar starts shipping.

I hope to see them on the 13th.

They could do........ but as you say it's more likely to be around the 13th.......

Maybe Apple will release as soon as the current PowerMac inventory reduces to a certain level..... they can probably be very flexible on the release date because they haven't announced anything about possible PowerMac releases.......

I figure that if the inventory reduces quickly enough then we'll get an earlier release date....... if not the hot favourite has to be around the time the current promotion runs out..... or the very tail of this month........

i think igav hit the nail on the head. they are ready. have been since mwny, but apple still has too many powermacs in inventory. so as soon as those supplies dry up we will see an announcement. although i would say aug 13 is a pipedream. any time before aug 24 is unlikley since as people have said it will steal jag's thunder (even if only announced, the announcement is the big thing). and that pretty much brings us to september already.

so powermacs in september (and lots of confused mac fans when aug ends and no new powermacs).

(but if you want 'em early maybe you should buy a bunch of current powermacs to help apple clear inventory... just a thought ;) )

OK, we'll see what Apple pulls out of his sleeve.

Is this the thread where I should start chanting??

'DDR, DDR, DDRRR, DDR, oe ah
DDR, DDR, DDRRR, DDRR,
GEEFIVEEE, GEEFIVE, GEEEFIVEE, GEFIVE
SYSTEMBUHUS, SYSTEMBUS'

Hard to put some melody in a text :D
But it's supposed to be a soccer-fan chant :D

I doubt apple has cleared out all of its inventory. Im guessing a mid august release, but no later then the middle of september. If we dont get a new PM by sept i will be mad. :(

I dont really care for it being a g5, but a 7500 g4 chip would be sweet too. But it will be a 7470 i think. Good enough ;)

Well, two times come to mind for the debut of the new machines if they happen today - the most obvious one would be 10AM EST - when the first Apple Stores open on the east coast - and just before that the store.apple.com should be updated and show the 'please stand by' announcement.

So far nothing.

I was at the apple store in clarendon and they told me that
they are doing a new layout design for the store. Meaning signs and putting demo ipod 20gigs tomorrow tuesday 6th! could be this to go along with a new product introduction?? I'll be at the store tomorrow to see what new they have.

Mr. Anderson

I don't think today we'll see anything. They redo the store every once in a while anyway, so it could be nothing more than a normal change

Its after 10AM and this from apple.com - notice no 'NEW' in the G4 section.....

If you have the funds now, get one... If you want to save more and maybe get some upgrades put in it right off the bat, wait until you can. I would really suggest getting the 800MHz model. I have that one and do NOT regret it in the least. I also have 768MB of ram installed, along with the stock airport card and 40GB drive.

One thing I would say, do NOT install sharity onto it. That software (to access a shared folder on a pc) WILL **** your airport card over and require you to restore the system to get a stable airport connection once again.

do you plan on seeing an update to the TiPB? It might not happen at the same time as the desktops, but who knows. I'll bet it happens next week after the rebate offer ends. Then I'll be making my own trip to the Clarendon store at lunch.

I say they release something around the 13th or in September. Maybe with Jaguar, but if they did it before they'd get more press. They need more press.

I've tended to think that the new PowerMac announcement will correspond to the end of the current promotion. The promotion ends the 12th so an announcement around the 12th or 13th would be plausible. It could be later as some have speculated, even into September, but I think anybody expecting it to be _before_ the 12th is engaging in some wishful thinking.

Well, here's some circumstantial evidence that points to it being around the 12th/13th time frame rather than later. Up to this week, if you went to the Apple store and went through the motions of ordering a PowerMac G4, you were quoted a 1-2 day shipping time. If you go there today, however, you will be quoted a 3-5 day shipping time. At least that's what I got when I tried it; I tried the low and high end models, without any custom features (which will automatically result in a longer shipping time).

Now, that quote is in business days, not calendar days (as my wife found out to her displeasure a few weeks ago) so five business days would be a week from today, the 12th. So this _could_ mean that they have really stopped shipping the current models and will wait till the new models ship to fill the orders (for this theory to be true they would have to ship on that date, not just announce).

A couple of points to elaborate further:

1) As I alluded to above, my wife made a recent purchase, a TiBook, from the Apple store. This order was placed before the new TiBooks were announced. We knew they were coming soon, since there were rumors and the local merchant's stocks were becoming depleted. I would actually have waited, but she needed it right away, even if it was the old model. Well, we were quoted a pretty long shipping time (something like 10-12 days) and as I said this turned out to be business days. As it turned out, the new model was announced during that period, and the old order was automatically cancelled and replaced with the new model. (We actually got a slight deal on it as we got it at the old price, and the new price was slightly higher).

So, when the shipping date on the vanilla model begins to stretch out like that, it _could_ mean that they are preparing to switch to a new model line.

2) It has been speculated that Apple might announce at a certain date and ship at a later date. I think this is unlikely when they do an announcement like this that is not timed to coincide with a keynote address or something like that. I believe (please correct me if anyone can remember a counterexample) that in all of the instances where they announced hardware that wasn't actually shipping, they have done it at a show where there is some reason to make the announcement in advance (in order to have something to announce at the show) Otherwise, they generally hold the announcement until they are ready to ship.

P.S. I don't think the Jaguar retail introduction is any constraint, I think they are fully capable of shipping Jaguar with hardware before the retail date. The rumor is 10.2 went GM last week which might be cutting it close for shipping it with the G4s if they ship next week. They might also just include a free "Up-To_Date" subscription or something.

I just checked the Apple store EDUCATION and it still says 7-10 days for all stock configuration PowerMacs (it said this last week as well -- except 733MHz is 1-2 days).

The regular Apple Store has been changed from 1-3 days on all PowerMacs to 3-5 days. If we don't see an update on Tues, August 6th, I'm sure by Tuesday, Aug. 13 we'll have a new PowerMac announcement.

The displays say 1-2 days, so I'll bet we'll still have the same displays.

The new Powermacs will probably be released on August 24th. Currently, on August 24th, we know that:

A - The "Cristal-Clear" Powermac + Apple Display ends August 24th.
B - Jaguar ships August 24th.

Jaguar could have shipped earlier; maybe it had to be made ready for the new machines which could be very high speed G4s or simply G5s. The G5 chip was supposed to be ready in the second quarter, if I remember well. Which makes that Apple could have integrated it for August 24th. The new machines would probably ship a bit later. Expect to see Superdrives across the Powermacs.

I must have missed something: what exactly happens on August 13th?

The Crystal-Clear promotion ends August 12, not the 24th. Since the 12th is the last day you could buy a PowerMac under this promotion, it seems like the 13th would be the earliest date that Apple is likely to announce a new model (of course, it could be any day after the 13th...like the 24th, for instance).
