According to various reader reports, the new iMac G5 (http://www.apple.com/imac/) which was previously announced at Apple Expo Paris (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/08/20040831055647.shtml) has begun shipping to customers who placed early orders. Email announcements regarding shipment are being sent out as of today. Apparently both the 17 and 20 inch models are both shipping. Standard freight shipping takes approximately 10 days.

The question is... how many? Maybe Apple really did stockpile a ton of them over the summer. But they've already said supplies will be tight.

I'm surprised they're ready for shipping already.
It makes me wonder how long they've been waiting for decent supplies of G5s to get these things moving off the line and into homes.
It makes me believe they had the design/manufacturing lines set up long ago and were just waiting for enough chips to go around.

Just ordered a stock low-end 17" about an hour ago and my date is 10/12/2004.
I was hoping for something a little sooner, but it shouldn't be nearly as bad as the wait for my G5.

Somewhat the same for me. The new iMac is for my mother for email and basic web-surfing.
I had to hold myself back from tearing into one of my relatives who had the inane notion that a 500 dollar Dell was the smart purchase. They thought I was being a smart-ass when I told I'd be happy to if they made the weekly trip across country to clean her machine of viruses and spyware.
The 6500 the new iMac is replacing ran without a problem for eight or so years for her. I assume the machine will do the same.

I would guess that there have been plenty of components ready for the factory line. The iMac was supposed to ship in June so there should be no surprises on component availability. I would also assume that there are more than a few Apple engineers at the factory watching every step of production.
If an order placed today is scheduled to ship on Oct 12th I would guess that things are going fairly well in the factory - and that Apple will be shifting a lot of G5 chips to the iMac line for the first few months.
Sadly, there is still no e-mail from Apple about my BTO 20". I'm beginning to feel that the standard models will be pushed through the line first and then the BTOs as the line settles down.

If I were you i'd go with the powermac. iMacs are cool and all, but just not well suited for graphics intensive work. Thats just my take on it though, i'm sure most people would be more than happy to have an iMac to do minor prepress work with, but for a business i'd suggest goin with the powermac. Also, you can upgrade a powermac with a better gfx card, whilest you can't do that with an iMac (not suggested anyways).

macridah,
I ordered my BTO 20" at 6 AM on the morning they were announced, and have not received my e-mail either, but I do check it every 5 minutes . . .
I think that a lot of orders were placed by people who stayed up late in order to be first in line AND because the show was in Paris customers in the UK and Europe had a 5 - 8 hour head start on the business day.
I'm just afraid that Apple will fill orders for the standard models for a brief time (just to make sure production is going OK) before throwing the BTOs into the line.

Heck, any G5 will be sufficient. We use G4's (an iMac and 2 eMac's for preflight, a dozen or so 1.2GHz PM's in Graphics and Scanning). They are more than adequate for prepress work, unless you plan on doing some real heavy Photoshop work, or are getting into video.

An iMac is a LOT of power, and plenty... far more than people were doing the same tasks on two years ago and calling it high end.
The PowerMac is even more speed, no doubt.
It comes down to cost, then... what's the extra speed worth to you? If it was me, I'd prefer the PowerMac... but when it came down to what else I could do with the money, I'd cave and go for the 20" iMac.

[Press Release]
Apple today announced the newest, most exciting direction for it's new state of the art, iMac G5.
In a new endeavor, Maine's Governor has announce a new initiative called, "Little Huey". Elementary schools across the state will be installing hundreds of iMac G5's in supercomputing clusters to enable the little tots to generate live fractal computations for the purpose of moving finger paints from the real world to the digital realm. Using touch screen technology and dozens of tiny, eager contributors, the children will remove the mess and cleanup onus from teachers and save the expense of purchasing finger paint several times a year.
"This idea would not be possible without the incredible support of Apple Computer", said the governor. "My only regret is depriving all those eager Mac users their long awaited computers."
Apple declined to comment on the potential loss of shipping units to those ordering early, but did indicate that supply would gradually meet the high anticipated demand.

Does anyone know if their local Apple Store has even a display model in yet of the new iMac.
I need to ring them. It is unclear whether the US-ordered models come with a built-in power adapter that ranges from 100-240 volts. This is crucial to me, I will purchase it in the US, but perhaps use it in Europe, too.
The specifications listed by Apple on their website leave room for doubt, and I have contacted MacZone, MacConnection and MacMall and have received three different answers ('yes', I 'dont know' and 'no' (i.e. only 100-120 for US models).
Thanks, and to you early adopters, I'm green with envy! :(

Totally the wrong advice. I run a publishing company and for all of our light-prepress type workstations we've always used iMacs. They're great machines for this kinda work--and the G5 is going to be just killer for it (we ordered one the day they were announced).

Actually I was going to order an emac for my mother for the very reasons you stated. But the the extra cash for the new iMac was for me, it just felt cooler buying one than the emac. :)
But seriously, I had her briefly on a 300mhz G3 machine running Panther and I was blown away by how usable it was. It would clearly chug compared to my dual G5 on any computationally expensive tasks, but for all the basic email/webbrowsing actives it was not noticeably slower than my machine.

Hopefully this will be more than just a select few. I feel that Apple has done some serious damage to its reputation, regardless of whose to blame for delays, by constantly pushing back ship dates on other products such as the 2.5's and 30" dispalys w/graphics card. Has apple learned a lesson? Maybe they estimated ship dates much later than what they planned on shipping so to protect themselves in the event that unforeseen problems (ie IBM) delay shipping times

I was leaning toward that idea. We have a person at work that does mainly 1-2 color jobs in indesign and QuarkXpress. All of the heavy duty PS and AI work is on my machine, which is a G4 PM now, and will probably be a G5 soon :D
Considering the person will be graduating from os9 on a 400 G3, the imac should be all the power they need for quite a while, a PM will be overkill. Thanks to everyone for the input.

No way is Apple shipping "just 10 units". They announced during the last quarterly results that the new iMacs would initially be shipped to the US by air freight, reducing their gross margin.
The most effective (cheapest) way to do this would be a chartered freighter, probably a MD-11, and there will be a lot of iMacs on that plane. While some may be BTOs I would not be surprised to see the plane heavily loaded with stock models for the Apple Stores, early apple.com orders and early orders from resellers. Lets face it, a plane load will not go far!
I would also bet that the line is pretty well at full speed now. There would have been a need to ramp it up slowly to ensure all stages of the line worked well and for staff training purposes, but that stage is probably over with. I'm looking for my e-mail in the next few days.

I'm not a person waiting on a 2.5GHz but I want to put in my $0.02 on this.
The 2.5 is a hard chip for IBM to make, low yield rates, things like that. However the 1.6 and the 1.8 are fairly easy for them to make - in fact they most often times are the 2.5s or 2.0s that don't make it. This is very common in the microelectronics world.
A chip is fabbed, then tested. Based on the testing they are assigned a clock speed. That's why as time progresses clock speeds can go up because either A) they've gotten better yield rates and can 'bump' up the speed or B) They go to a smaller process (130nm vs 90nm for example)

You should call and get them to extend your warranty date on it. I don't think the 1 month of it just sitting there should count against your 1 year.
As for iMac G5s shipping, I'll be happy if mine ships by the end of the month. I'm currently estimated a ship date of October 12, so the end of the month would be ahead of schedule for me.

If I were you i'd go with the powermac. iMacs are cool and all, but just not well suited for graphics intensive work.
At my last job, in 2002, I did all my work on a 300mhz B&W. I did some 18x20 posters on it. So 1.6ghz imac with serial-ata will be MORE than adequate for indesign.
Right now, I work on a dual 867 MDD and it is _completely_ fast enough. Basically real time for almost everything I do. (18x24 posters at 300dpi). the only thing I really wait for is lens blur in photoshop, and maybe saving/printing. Never have to wait for InDesign beyond PDF Exporting/printing, and that's maybe 15 seconds max.
Point is, these iMacs are ahead of the prepress curve. the 17" iMac would be awesome for what you're doing.

Well if I see a post saying someone got one by Sept 15 then I will be impressed. I wonder if Apple can make it;)
Well, apparently they can; my mom ordered a 17" 1.6 ghz stock on the 31st. I saw the news on the home page and checked the shipping and low and behold, right on apple it tells me it shipped. I got slightly pissed off when I saw on apple that the projected ship date was 9/30. Listed under that was a tracking number which linked me to fedex's site. I checked there and they say that it will get here on Wednesday the 15th! Now we'll see if they'll follow through... :D

Apple will email shipping notices during the night (US time) a lot of times so it's either stay up late or hope Santa has been good to me.
douglasio, I would LOVE IT is your mom was the first to get one in the US! I'm even willing to wait a day in order for that to happen. Think of how much fun you will have telling all your friends that your mom has a new G5 iMac. I'd call every one of them as soon as it arrives - or at least the ones that know what a G5 imac is. :D

Wow, apple really nailed their projected shipping times for this one, almost no delay at all!
Is this a joke? The new iMac really *should* have been announced in June and shipped in July. Am I missing something here?
No display models in the Cambridge, MA, store as of Monday 13 Sept.

Maybe I shouldn't have upgraded the RAM on my 20" iMac. That was the only thing I changed. How long does it take to add a RAM chip? :(
Oh well... I don't mind waiting since I still have my old mac. Once I have to send it off to it's new owner, then I'll become impatient about waiting for my new iMac.

Heard a rumor from friends inside Apple Cupertino that Steve J. plans to dress up in Fedex uniform and deliver the first iMac that will be shipped here in northern California. Anyone else heard anything like this? Ya gotta hand it to old Steverino when it comes to marketing panache! Talk about a tactic to build early anticipation and buzz!
I got my order in at 6:30 AM PDT on 8/31, but it's a BTO with an Airport card & extra RAM, so I probably won't be inviting Steve in for coffee to help me set it up. (Ship date stll showing as on or before 9/29.)
So far I haven't seen any posts here indicating anyone's actually gotten one yet. Who got the display models in Paris? (Models in Paris, perhaps?)

Yeah, when I told my friend last night that it had shipped, he said "cool." Just "cool." It is much more than cool! The only problem is my household is busy on Wednesday afternoon and evening so no one will be hanging around to recieve the package from FedEx. Maybe I can fake sick or something and miss out on my "valuable" learning experiences. Regardless of delivery time, I'll post pictures as soon as I can, hopefully Thursday. I just hope I can get the coveted FedEx guy picture... ;)

This is one box that will require a signature! The good thing about FedEx is that they will leave a notice that your mother can take in that evening with an ID and get pick it up IF their depot is not too far. I've done several trips to the FedEx office there.
Now we just need to hear from someone about their Grammy getting the second iMac!

I think it's because of the stock config of your 17". But I've read somewhere that the 20" were to be even more constrained than the rest. Now i'm not so sure if this is the fact.
Anyway, congrats on the folks who's iMac has shipped, but be sure to check out our thread (powermac G5 shipping), cause a lot of us are still waiting on their june-orders  , you are welcome guys, hope this thread doesn't go the same route.

Anyway, ordered a 17" with 512 ram on Aug 31. Just checked the Apple site, and it has been shipped. Checked tracking, and it shows it left the FedEx dock this morning, with projected delivery of the 16th.
It's leaving Shanghai, CN. Is that Connecticut?

BTO : build to order : a customized config.
Yours is a bto, because you have 512 ram instead of the stock 256

I ordered her a "stock" 20" imac G5 on 8/31 8:05 AM PST. Yesterday morning I received the email from Apple that it has shipped (China) and we should have it within 10 days.
I wanted more ram and an Airport card but I was afraid it would delay the shipment. So I ordered 1GB of Crucial ram from NewEgg and ordered an Airport card in a seperate order from Apple. The ram and Airport card are sitting on my desk waiting for the iMac G5 !! :)

If they charged your card it probably is off the production line and, like a lot of others, will be going through the paperwork. I have a feeling that the customers that specified 2nd day air will have their paperwork processed before me and others that took "standard" shipping, which might put me a day behind. I also have a feeling that we are the last to load onto the plane the day it is picked up.
The real joy will be watching your computer as it travels to you. When I ordered an iBook for my wife it only stopped in 4 cities before arriving!

I ordered morning of the 1st day (twice - after the double RAM fiasco caused the rep to cancel my first order).
20 in w/upgrades: 250 GB HD, 512KB RAM, bluetooth, airport express card, Final Cut Express.

As for which BTOs get through the line first, I think it might be like auto production, where they make runs of interior colors.
With the iMac they might make a run using mother boards with BT and then a run without BT. To add to the fun they might also make sub runs with one size HD, then another.
The more you think about it, it seems logical that short runs would be based on what would be flowing into the production line in one batch, especially when thousands of iMacs are going to be going through the line daily. I'll have to wait until they have a BTO run using BT MBs and 250GB HDs. :(

It will go by air from China to Anchorage and then to another location if the iBook I got was any indication. Depending on where you live I would guess that it will go by air to the closest location to you with FexEx ground distribution.
Apple said that they were taking a hit on the gross margins for the initial iMacs because of air freight costs. I would guess that this means people living in or close to major cities will get theirs faster than others.
The other shipping option was 2nd day air (next day is not available because of customs clearance) and 2nd day would just about be equal to overnight for something traveling that far. I'm not worried about an extra day or so as I used that savings to help pay for AppleCare - rather important for a 1st week rev a computer, even if it is from Apple.

I ordered the same config as you, and got the same unauthorized change in RAM config, but didn't notice that problem until Sept 1, at which time I called Apple and the order with 1 GB was cancelled and the correct order with 512 MB was entered. When I first ordered (Aug 31 @ 0640, BTW), estimated shipping was on or before Sept 30, and this has not changed.

You know, this is probably borderline fan-boy but if that happened to me (it won't, I live in NC) I'd make sure my two year old daughter was around when we fired it up. Every time I boot up or something she screams 'APPLE!' when the logo appears on the screen, or if I have my powerbook 12" on my lap and she sees it from the back and the apple is lit up from the back light. I find it cute but then she's my kid.
This coming from the guy who sat across from Steve Wozniak in First Class and was too chicken **** to bother him to say hello. My wife probably thought I was insane for a few moments, stuttering and pointing and all. He did crossword puzzles the whole flight. When I saw him at check in I about fell over. Was here at the RDU airport last year. I'd just seen him on the screen savers (back when the show didn't suck) and was really surprised to see him in Raleigh, NC

The shipments to the US are from China - don't know if Europe will be included in this factory's distribution, or will have to wait for Cork to ramp up - which might be happening as we wait in agony until our shipment notification is received.
I think it is important to Apple to make a lot of new G5 iMac customers happy with fast shipments, and to clear them out in order to get ready for the Christmas trading period so you should beat your ship date estimate with any luck. I hope you get yours the same day I get mine. :D

I would see if it is possible for a neighbor to take it in for you and then leave a note for FedEx, or who ever delivers for Apple where you live. They will require a signature, but may deliver to a neighbor. That is why I always have my office as a delivery address - there is always someone here.

It will go by air from China to Anchorage and then to another location if the iBook I got was any indication. Depending on where you live I would guess that it will go by air to the closest location to you with FexEx ground distribution.
Mine is shipping from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania according to FedEx.

If it gets here tomorrow (finger's crossed), I might get one of my neighbors to sign for it. I don't think he knows what a Mac is anyway so there is little chance of him stealing it. And besides, I know where he lives if he tries to.

It appears Apple charged my credit card on Sunday. For $2,087.80 (This better be a dang good computer!). But, I haven't received anything from them yet. I assume maybe tommorrow. Still, I find it odd that they bill me and then don't let me know two days later. Not fun on a credit card with a small limit.

You will get an internal BlueTooth module. "No BlueTooth" simply refers to the fact that you are not ordering BlueTooth seperately, but as part of a package with a keyboard and mouse.

I guess it could be, but I'm not sure why they would do that 2 weeks after the order. Also, they have already shipped three of the things from the same order (Printer, Airport Extreme, Airport Express). I hope that is not the case, I guess I will find out soon. If that is the case though then they are jerks because they haven't credited it back yet!

My credit union called me 9/2 to check on an "unusually large" order amount made at 3:04 A PST...several items from Apple, including the big charge of $2,023, plus four other items (got AE, some DVDs, cable kit and Office). Yes, that was me, I told her.
So Apple checked and got pre-authorization 12 days ago...but no email yet.

My guess is that they will start updating late in the evening as 6:30 PM Central Time is 7:30 AM tomorrow in China. That means that 6:30 AM Wednesday for me will be 7:30 PM in China and the day is probably wrapped up as far as shipment notifications go. After that it is only FedEx that will be updating.

I'm really excited for all you folks hovering over the FedEx page, refreshing every 5 minutes [or less] to see if the sucker is getting any closer. I remember feeling surgically attached to the internet waiting for my PB to arrive.
There aren't many things as fun as waiting for that box to arrive. Well, maybe watching my son being born was a close second :D

The only way I could get a delivery date was to go to the apple store page, click on "my order" and track it by clicking on the tracking number (delivery date 9/16 by 10:30 AM). If I track it through Fed Ex's website, it does not give me a delivery date. I had standard shipping on my computer. :)
Hope that helps

Little signs of hope...
Ordered 8/31 am - 20 in BTO, Airport Express Base Station, Apple Care.
Selected "ship only when all items are available." From 8/31 until 5 minutes ago they ALL said "on or before 9/29".
Now it has changed to "ship items SEPARATELY as they become available" (I haven't done anything that would have changed it). Now Applecare says "on or before 9/17", Airport Express Base Station "on or before 9/15", and 20 in BTO "on or before 9/29".
I wonder if this means my BTO is about to be released, and they are sending the other things (which aren't coming from China like the iMac) to arrive at the same time.

It's heading on over to Mystic Connecticut (south-eastern part of the state). I've been checking FedEx regularly but it hasn't changed at all from "Departed FedEx sort facility" in Harrisburg PA. Go to http://www.apple.com then click the Store tab. At the top of that page, there are five items just below the tabs. The next-to-last one says 'Order Status', go for that one.
Enter your Apple ID and password . . . cross your fingers. For more info, click the 'Details' button.

I did the same as you - ordered the accessories to only be shipped when all items were available. Now, the accessories I ordered are listed to ship "on or before 9/15", although my BTO 20" is still listed as "on or before 9/30". And like yours, the shipping has been changed to "Items shipped separately as they become available." Are the accessories being shipped tomorrow because they are shipping from a different location than the iMac? Or is the factory in Shanghai doing a run of 20" BTOs as we speak? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of... "Days We Need Lives".
Edit -> Refreshed the order status page, and accessories reverted to "on or before 9/30", but refreshed it again, and they were "on or before 9/15" again. Weird!

Ramping up has gone very smoothly the past few weeks it would seem. Much smoother then the previous iMac which had assembly problems with the chrome arm, if you remember. Supplies will be constrained, however. Apple will not be able to fullfill all orders until Nov-Dec. This assumes that IBM has had no problems making the chips. Can anyone who has received their iMac tell us which chip is being used. 90nm or the earlier one (120nm I think).

How about Cinebench 2003 scores with the G5 version? that really gives a good comparison for video card performance and CPU performance. And you can compare those scores to intel platforms too since there is a version for Windows.

Even though they say mine shipped out yesterday morning, Fed Ex site says it's still stuck in Shanghai. What gives? I' rather be anchored down in Anchorage. But seriously, why are some coming from China and others report theirs coming from Pennsylvania and Cupertino? Did Apple smuggle a bunch of illegals into rural Pennsylvania to build computers cheap?

Talking about RAM... does anyone know if there are some requirements about the thickness of the RAM modules? I am asking this because most of the recent RAM bricks from Crucial/Corsair/... have heat-spreaders that make the modules themselves a bit thicker than usual. Not a problem when they are standing right, but the iMac has those modules in diagonal, according to the pictures!!

My informal perusal of the boards pointed to Crucial - many claim that Apple uses Crucial/Micron memory, and their prices are reasonable. I have used them before, without any problems.
But I decided to go with www.transintl.com . I have used them before as well, and have actually been to their store in Orange Co where they have been very helpful. Their price for 1GB is $199, vs $253 at Crucial.
PS - remember that matching your two memory sticks will enable 128-bit dual channel memory. It will boost performance (although we won't know how much until someone does some tests on a shipped unit).

I bought 2 sticks of 512 from 18004memory.com for $71.50 each. (Was $72 at memorytogo.com but shipping is more expensive.)
What is interesting to note, the Powermac G5 3200 memory is less expensive than the iMac G5 3200 memory when you do a search on ramseeker.com. Buy the PM memory. They are exactly the same thing.

Apple didn't use crucial or micron in my G5, it was line infineron or some damn thing.
Also, I don't think the G5 has a switch to run in single channel mode, so you'd better make sure you match up your chips :).
I just put a stack of four 512mb corsair chips in there, cost me $310 from http://www.newegg.com and everything is working fine (and I did the extended hardware test after installing, which passed with flying colors).
And by the way, just because Apple uses it DOES NOT mean it's good. Apple had Maxtor hard drives in many of its G5s and quantum hard drives in the first G3s (including the '98 iMac)--both of which are extremely poor quality.
Building PCs has at least taught me 1 thing: Package deals never provide the best quality, it's always moderate to good quality, and sometimes they shoot the moon and throw in some crap hard drives (I know gateway, compaq, and Apple have done it, I don't know for sure if Dell has though).

Also, I don't think the G5 has a switch to run in single channel mode, so you'd better make sure you match up your chips.
G5 iMac (this is an iMac thread) runs in single channel mode if there is one stick or if the pair is mismatched, and dual channel if the pair is matched.
Again, we don't yet know how much the performance boost is, but we do know that there will be some kind of performance boost with a matched pair.

My informal perusal of the boards pointed to Crucial - many claim that Apple uses Crucial/Micron memory, and their prices are reasonable. I have used them before, without any problems.
I would recommend crucial. I've used them since 1999 or so for memory upgrades and have never had a stick go bad or have a problem.
I've used them on IBM Thinkpads, Apple Powerbook, Apple iMac, clone motherboards, etc.

How matched is matched? Does it have to be from same manufacturer, or is a PC3200 DDR 512 MB stick from Crucial considered matched to the OEM one that will come with my iMac?

We don't know yet. Most people are betting that Apple is delivering RAM of CAS timing CL-3, and that if you match the size and CL-3 then you will have access to dual channel.
Some even surmise that if the CAS timing is different, that the G5 iMac could still do dual channel -- albeit at the slower timing. This one is pure conjecture, and we have to wait for reports from the field...
Most iMac owners will never know or care about single vs. dual channel. It was smart of Apple to enable any combination of sticks in the two slots.

How about this: My 1.8 20" is shipping with 256 ram. I use after effects and Final Cut and so could use every little bit... but I'm low on funds. Here's what I can afford: buy 1 Gb to combine with my 256... or buy 2 512 and lose the 256- I can't afford 2 1 Gb.... If it runs better on matched pairs, any idea on which of these configs would be superior?
I know no one knows for sure, but perhaps an educated guess. :)

If you are pushing the iMac to do that, I'd shoot eventually to max out the memory at 2GB. Thus, I'd buy the 1GB, live with the performance hit of single channel memory for the time being, and save your pennies to buy a second 1GB stick.

I'm dealing with this dilemma right now. I ordered a 20inch iMac with a single 512mb chip. According to this:

the 2.5 Ghz G5 does 356-CPU on the single CPU rendering test.
that is, it scales almost linearly in with CPU- frequency (basically getting 140 per GHz).

those Cinebench scores are pretty sweet. Just for comparison's sake, here is a IBM S50 2.6ghz P4 with 512mb RAM on XP Pro:
Processor : S50
MHz : 2600
Number of CPUs : 1
Operating System : 512
Graphics Card : Intel X-treme
Resolution : 1024x768
Color Depth : 32-bit
****************************************************
Rendering (Single CPU): 253 CB-CPU
Rendering (Multiple CPU): --- CB-CPU
Shading (CINEMA 4D) : 254 CB-GFX
Shading (OpenGL Software Lighting) : 764 CB-GFX
Shading (OpenGL Hardware Lighting) : 704 CB-GFX
OpenGL Speedup: 3.01
This means that the new iMac is as fast as a P4 2.6ghz system. so much for all those people who scream that Macs are not as fast as PC's. Although there are faster P4's out there, most consumer PC's are around the 2.6 - 2.8 ghz P4 level at this time. Hopefully Apple will update the G5 to 2 - 2.2 ghz with the next iMac update.
What impresses me most is that IBM is able to keep up with intel even though the chip is 800mhz slower. All while keeping the iMac silent as a pin drop. Man, I gotta get one now.

These are good cinebench results, but i was hoping for better. We also have to keep in mind that 64 bit systems are not yet optimized and the cinebench test that corbin took was not G5 optimized as well. Maybe we will see better results when we have G5 optimization. But, as we Mac fans know, its the user experience that counts not whether or not we can squeeze out another second against a P4.

My guess would be not order RAM from 1-800-4 Memory. I would open up the back of that mother and look at what type of RAM is in it. The RAM should have a sticker that tells what kind it is. I know that on Crucial's website they say that the RAM for both the powermac and imac is PC3200 CL3. I know when I order mine, I'm getting the stock 256 and buying some better RAM.
If I were to guess I would get PC3200 CL3 512MB, that should match the stick you have and you'll be running dual channel.

I heard (but don't know if it's true) that there was an issue between xbench and the new iMacs such that it wasn't providing accurate test results and the xbench program required an update. I do see that xbench is not correctly "seeing" that the iMac's cache runs at full processor speed (test results show cache speed at 1.15ghz). Hopefully those low scores will go up with an xbench update. If you scroll down on the xbench page you'll see an entry that was made from the Paris Expo floor (called "Apple Expo") which scored 156 on xbench--that seems to me about right for a 1.8ghz g5 iMac.

The stock 17" 1.6 just arrived about 15 minutes ago.
Plugged it in and it's running software update right now.
Some thoughts. It is deceptively heavy. The scene from Jurrasic Park came to mind when I first lifted it out of the box. "Is it heavy?" "Then it's expensive." Just like when I got my G5, I was worried about what it looked like in pictures. But when I finally had it out of the box it was impressive.
One thing that may be nice to tweak in the future models is the border around the screen is quite reflective.
Other than that it is exactly what I expected it to be. Plug it in and it works.

I think that XBench has flaws in it which is why i refuse to use it. The variables in it just make it unreliable. When you have two computers exactly the same and see points swaying+/- 75 points, that benchmark is not a good one.

From the iMac support page at the Apple website
G5 iMac memory support. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86814)
iMac G5: Memory specifications
Learn what kinds of memory you can use with your iMac G5.
iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of these criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin, 400Mhz DDR SDRAM.
There are two RAM slots. The maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2 GB. You can use RAM module sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB, in either slot.
DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.
Always follow the upgrade instructions for Memory and AirPort Extreme card installation as written. Never attempt to remove screws that are not listed in the upgrade instructions.
Hope that helps.

iMac G5 parts you can install yourself. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86812)
Think you need a new part? You can replace many of your iMac G5's parts yourself.
The iMac G5 is designed to make it easy for you to install replacement parts if you need to. The parts you can install yourself are:
AirPort Extreme Card
Memory - DDR 400 MHz (PC3200) SDRAM
Hard drive
Optical drive
Power supply
LCD display
Modem card
Mid-plane assembly (contains the main logic board, the G5 processor, fans, NVIDIA graphics processor, and so forth).
I hope the part in bold means what I think it means.
About the G5 iMac diagnostic lights (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86815)
The iMac has a light to indicate an overheating, I guess it is a possibility. Though anything is really.
If you can replace the midplane then the G5 iMac is upgradable???

Mine is the 20".
Can you post some pictures of the 20" as that's what i've ordered and all the pictures so far seem to be of the 17". Is the 20" really big? I've been getting worried in case it looks like a massive chunk of plastic and not nice and elegant like my current 17' sunflower iMac.
Also does anyone know if there is more room in the back of the 20"? I mean it has the same components as the 17" so there must be more space due to the bigger enclosure. It also puzzles me as to why the 20" is 3mm thicker than the 17".
Guess I'll find out when mine arrives. I'm in the UK and the ship date still says 28th Sept ...... but I can wait :)
