Price: $2600
I love my my Dual 2 Ghz G5 PowerMac, but for how much I use it, this machine is just too much horsepower for me. I am quite sure whatever machine I downgrade to will be considerably slower.
I have used this machine primarily for personal use with Photoshop CS and Final Cut Pro. Here is the configuration:
proc: Dual 2 Ghz G5
ram: 2.5 gigs
hd: 250 gig serial ata
wireless: internal bluetooth module
video: ATI radeon 9600 Pro w/64 mb ram
2+ years of Applecare
plus all the other standard features
The ram is 512 default from Apple along with an extra 2 gigs from Ramjet. That means there are still two more memory slots available for upgrade (6 of 8 slots used).
The Superdrive is the 4x version, not the revB 8x.
Computer will be returned to factory condition and all software updates applied. Any further customizations can be worked out.
I just checked the price on this exact same equipment brand new (8x burner instead of 4x), and the total comes to $3337. Everything is in pristine condition, except the keyboard. I've never even used the mouse. Taking into account usage and a bit of depreciation, I would be willing to take reasonable offers around $2600. Preference and discount will be given to those around the Boston area, as it would make for the smoothest transaction.
If interested, please respond to the thread and send an email to drgandy at mit dot edu (home) and david dot gandy at fmr dot com (work).
Thanks,

Thanks for catching that! I was trying to find the specs on the machine without actually being in front of it. You are right, I believe it is the 9600. It was the upgraded option available on the video card at the time.
Thanks!

that would mean it has 64mb of video ram, not 128 (if it's the 9600... if it's the 9800 then it has 128mb of video ram.)

Now we have it straight. Anyone know where I can find the options the original G5 had available? I couldn't find anything on Apple's support site.
Thanks guys. Corrections made.

I every time I hear someone state "This computer is just too fast for me” or "It has too much horsepower for me” it makes me laugh.
My G5 is plenty fast but if it were all of a sudden it was touched by God and its performance would double I sure would not say to myself " Damn this computer is way to fast for me I think I'll sell it and get something slower”
I think what these people are really saying is "I can't get use to Mac's so I guess I'll sell this and switch back to PC's" or "I need the money so I'll sell my G5"
If that's not the reason it still cracks me up when I hear someone complain that there computer is just to fast for them.

Corrupted, I think it is more that someone realized that they have a computer that is more than they need. This means that they spent more than they had to to get a computer that would be adequate for their needs. Why spend the money on a dual 2.5GHz G5 when a 1.6 GHz G5 iMac is all you need. That is a huge savings - $1700, and you get a screen on the iMac. By selling his dual 2.0 GHz G5, drgandy can recoup a large portion of the money he spent, buy a slower/cheaper computer more suitable to his needs, and pocket the difference.

If someone is using Photoshop CS and Final Cut Pro a Dual G5 does the job better that a 1.6 G5 iMAC.

Corrupted, of course the dual 2.0 will be faster, but maybe he's played with a slower machine and it is fast enough for his purposes. Let him make his own decision without being ridiculed.
Good luck to the seller..

I don't see the point in selling it. Maybe buying so much RAM was an expensive mistake, but your G5 will last you more time than a slower computer. In the end, you end up losing no money at all by have the Dual 2.0 GHz G5.

That doesn't really matter, does it? drgandy wants to sell his computer, that is all the matters. If you don't want to buy the computer, don't post here. I think you need to review the Marketplace For Sale/Trade Policy (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=30505), before a moderator has to step in here.

Wow. I certainly wasn't expecting that. It has nothing to do with money or going back to PC. I have no intention of going back to PC. Ever. I just decided the beast was too huge on my desk for the benefit. A 12" PowerBook and 20" iMac G5 should be just fine for me, and much more useful.
You know, I hate the Yankees. Well, not really. I just hate some Yankees fans I've unfortunately met.
Thanks for the support to everyone else.

Don't forget the obsolescence factor, Dave. I'll never forget how much I kicked myself not long after buying an iMac 350 because I wanted to avoid buying more of a machine than I needed (my first Apple was a IIc). Let's face it, Macs aren't cheap. But when I started dealing with digital photography I was stuck with sluggish Photoshop performance, Skimpy drive space (6 gigs!), and no Firewire.
I now have "more than I need" with my 2.0 Ghz G5 with 500 GB of drive space and 4 GB RAM and a 20" LCD running on a 9800 Pro Graphics card. This is just how I like it, for I will still be happily Mac-ing along 8 years from now with this fully upgradeable machine. Plus, you'll kick yourself later (I guarantee you will) if you ditch your G5 Powermac and find yourself getting into video editing or some other soon-to-be-revealed processor intensive tasking further on down the road. Notice that those high end G4 Powermacs are still tooling along fine.

... I just decided the beast was too huge on my desk for the benefit. ...
I bought a refurb 1.6 when the G5 iMac was so long in coming; I really didn't want to, but I couldn't get my job done with the G4 Cube. The only significant drawback of the Power Mac is the huge cabinet. I know where you're coming from, Dave. In a period where everyone is transitioning to shuttles and all-in-ones, the Power Mac actually got bigger - it now has the biggest cabinet of any personal computer. But at least yours has two processors. Mine has a couple cubic feet of empty space inside.

Funny you should write that, my G5 just locked me out of the house and I'm writing this from the library, I think it's messing with my wife....
