i like pete sampras for men, steffi graf for women, and martina navratilova overall historically

navratilova had to re-make her game, and her weight, and go against the likes of everet, shriver, and graf and martina also did well in doubles, too

john macenroe had the best natural ability but lacked the mental game to stay consistent for a long time like connors (who had a great mental game)

micheal change had one of the best mental games and was surpassed only by sampras in his heyday

and ivan lendl was also a longtime consistent player and garnered eight titles and towards the end, he had john macenroe's number

chang only won the french, and youngest player on men's side to win a major - first american to win on clay in thirty+ years (both were super big deals then, in 1989)...but he kept pace with sampras almost stroke for stroke and was number two for longest time

he never caught sampras but nobody did...at least until sampras got old...hey pete, gotta hide that baldspot;)

For the Men I like Tommy Hass, but he is not the best, the best player was the late great Arthur Ash.

Anyone who says Anna Kornicova is the best women does not even watch tennis. She is one of the worst players on the womens tour.

I'm sorry but Anna Kournikova is ugly. She's too skinny and bronzed to me, and I don't find the Eastern European complexion attractive. Martina Hingis is the best looking woman in tennis, and unlike Kournikova, she doesn't suck. She's got a great finesse game, although that has been eclipsed by the power game of the Williams sisters.

My favorite women's tennis player though is Monica Seles, who just seems like a fun gal in interviews. And you have to give her credit for coming back from that stabbing, even though she never regained her former glory... and the grunting is funny. :)

On the men's side, I don't know, I like both Sampras and Agassi... I tend to watch women's tennis more because there is more volleying going on as opposed to all the aces and smashing and quick points of the men's game.

i think andrea jaeger, from yesteryear, was a younger number one and tracy austin was also a young top ranked player

but it's sad how much attention is paid to how anna looks and though she is not number one, she is still a touring pro and could clean the clock of all female players not super highly ranked and most men players not ranked at the top of the open status

i remember beating this college male player in the a category and i felt pretty good...then one day, i played, for kicks, an open level female player, ranked between 100 and 200 in the world, and she beat me handily

i could not even return one serve of hers since they went over 100 mph...it's amazing to be on the other end of one of those with someone who can place it with hawkeye accuracy

and then you have venus williams drilling one at 127 mph...faster than john mac enroe in his day with wood rackets

but john mac enroe in his prime, with a wood racket, would easily beat venus williams today even if she had a titanium racket

but if venus now, in her prime, played john mac enroe who is an aging baby boomer nearing fifty, she would possibly beat him...but that is not fair pitting a top woman against a man who saw his best tennis twenty years ago...remember riggs vs. king...riggs was ancient like mac enroe is today

the number 200 man in the world on the pro tour today could beat venus in straight sets if he were to play her

and john mac enroe said that an open level touring player who happened to be playing in college right now with 120 mph serves could beat venus today and he would be a nobody playing for some unknown college team for free

now i sound like a sexist, but in tennis, we will never see the woman's number one beat the man's number one

in golf, pool, bowling, race car driving, archery, shooting, judo, horse racing, or super marathon running...a woman can beat a man in top pro form and it some cases it has happened

but in tennis, no way *but i may be proven wrong and it would be fun to see venus kick andre agassi's butt on center court:p
