View Full Version : What's your favourite beer?

Obviously, only intended for those of age... *nudge-nudge, wink-wink*

What beer is your favourite? I've a few - being originally from New Zealand, we have a nice range of 'em.

Lion Red
Steinlager
Mac's Gold (excuse the pun!)

But I was in Alaska a few years back, and had an amazing beer from Juneau, made from real glacier water. It's called "Alaskan Amber". That ranks RIGHT up there with the best...

>2% is for lightweights!

Heck yeah! And for people who want to become lightweights. :p

The closest I'll come to a "drink" would be Pepsi (No, I won't post that photo. :)) or old-fashioned Java.

Speaking of which, did you know that America is one of the most coffee-addictive countries? We're proud to be Americans!

Murphy's
Boddington's
Caffrey's
and Guiness (can or bottle)

All of them have to have the NO2 cartridge in them (which all the cans do) to give the thick, creamy head that makes them rule.

Very well stated Alpha!!

One that I can add to this list is Aldaris Porteris. A very nice dark beer from Latvia. It is now one of my very favorites. Find it. Drink it. You will love it!

I go through phases - I'll drink a particular beer almost exclusively for a few months, then find something else I like and drink that exclusively.

These days I try not to drink much at all, on account of beer being somewhat, uh, calorific, but my list of favorites in roughly chronological order is:

Rolling Rock (because it was OK for fairly cheap beer. At the time, cheapness was a major factor in my choice of beer)
Heineken (odd that, used to love it, now I can't stand the stuff)
Sprecher Dopplebock (local microbrewery, their spelling not mine)
Warsteiner (because it was OK for fairly cheap imported beer, for those times when quantity is more important than quality)
Guinness (not in a bottle, though)
Pilsner Urquell (current favourite - nice taste, reasonably priced, choice of 12 or 24oz :))

There's plenty of others I like, but all of the above are things that are fairly readily available without going to one of the big upmarket stores whose liquor section has lots of weird imports.

Oh, yeah - Sam Adam's Cranberry Lambic. Love the stuff, but you can only buy it around Christmas. Not a real lambic, lots of people hate it, but I'll buy the 12 bottle Christmas Selection (including the disgusting Old Fezziwig Ale) just to get the two bottles of Cranberry Lambic it includes. Also occasionally fond of Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat.

Finally, Sam Adam's Triple Bock. Most alcoholic beer brewed in the US (and I think the only things stronger are some of the Belgian abbey ales). Sells in a teeny little 6oz bottle costing about $13. Foul stuff - mix 5oz of Hershey syrup and a shot of vodka to get the same overall effect much more cheaply.

ah, resurrection of an old thread topic - this might be the 3rd time I've seen this, but always interesting to see what people like.

I'm an ale guy, love the darker beers, guiness, bass and a nice little brew out of boston - Harpoon Alt. But once in a while a nice Belgian Trapist ale is great - Chimay (http://www.chimay.be/www/chimay/site8/en/a_abbaye/a0_frameset.htm)

But I do have to say on a recent trip to New Orleans - I had an opportunity to escape the heat in a practically frozen 20 oz. schooner of Bud. I don't like rice beers (most big american beers have more rice than hops or anything else), but this day it was perfect.

I haven't had one since - last beer I had was a Bass.

There's a great brewpub here in Kalamazoo, Mi (Bells). Their beer realy is amazing. Their summer speciality, Oberon, is fantastic. It actually looks like a nice big thick glass of orange juice! They are going to increase production in the next few years, so keep an eye out for it. Very worth your while.

of course if i'm having a stogie then a beer just won't do-gotta make a bombay sapphire martini...extra cold, dirty, bruised with extra olives...add a romeo y julieta or a hoyo de monterey (or the occasional cuban:D ) and life is just too good. but then again, life is always too good.:)

You should all try Belgian beers. They are much tastier than all that Heineken **** and the like.

My favorites:

* Westmalle triple (brewed by monks, 9% of alcohol, unfilterd, so still full of yeast)
* Leffe blonde (6%)

Privileged to live in the country that has the best beers in the world.
There are too many really to start naming them all.
I went to a bar in Antwerp, and they serve over 800 Belgian Beers!!

Even the village that I come from has it's own abbey brewery!

My favorite is the normal light beer like Jupiler, maes. (5,5%)
Though a good cold Duvel is hard to refuse (9%) :p

in the us, there is the heineken you send to us with all the preservatives, and then there is the more pure dutch heineken which i used to get at a beer import store at twice the price

the same goes with lowenbrau...there is the us market stuff and then there is the real lowenbrau at twelve dollars a six pack

my friend is a alcohol buyer and his major american company gets all the us market stuff and much of it does not tell if there are preservatives on the label...currently, there is no law that demands it, but only suggests it...many hard core wine and beer buffs like me want that to change but profit and long shelf life beers is what goes in commerce hungry america

the best us market beer is warsteiner since the german warsteiner for the european market tastes only a slight bit better

What tickled me, was when I was in some little town in Oregon, I went to a Safeways to get a few bottles of Newcastles finest to enjoy whilst staying up till 5 in the morning to watch a F1 race in Europe, and for the first time in my life, I was asked for ID...... even though I was 21 at the time (everyone I know reckons I look into my 30's the cheeky bast*rds :p ) I didn't have any ID with me at the time, but as soon as she heard me speak she was like, "oh you're English..... the laws different there isn't it....." and then let me buy it...... so what you need is an English accent.... none of this fake ID business..... heh heh :p :p

Outdated stereotype. Somewhere between when I was born (1968) and when my brother was born (1971) the UK approach to dentistry shifted from "fix it when it breaks" to active prevention. The bad teeth thing isn't nearly as true as it used to be, at least for Brits under 30.

Me, I've got way too many fillings (at least I've had a lot of the amalgam ones replaced with nice white ones since I moved to the US) and somewhat uneven teeth (which I might have fixed one of these days). My brother, by contrast, has almost no fillings and got a lot of orthodontic work done (for free on the NHS) and thus has perfectly straight teeth.

The emergence of more private dentists in the UK has helped things too.

one thing i noticed besides the bad teeth, while i lived in london, was how the women aged...in the movie serendipity, with kate beckingsale and john cusack, one of the male characters mentions to cusack that "english chicks don't age too well"

i busted up because i saw so many homely, old looking english girls in their late 20s-early 30s

but i will say this...between age 18 and age 25, i have not seen any women in the world more beautiful than an english woman...one old english lady explained it to me like this..."when we are young, our porcelin skin gives us such an ethereal look, but when we get older, it just becomes too transluscent and we have the world's worst vericose veins...kind of like the london tube"...man, she cracked me up

i am asian and my asian friend, who is gay and into being very vain told my wife, "us asians look younger than anybody else in the world, but when we turn sixty, god turns us all into leather handbags"

this also busted me up since i don't see a lot of asians who look to be in their 40s or 50s...it's kind of like one looks 39 and then all of a sudden, instant senior citizenhood and one looks like the old man in one of those cheap hong kong martial arts movies

i will be 39 real soon, so if i end up looking like ghengis khan the following year, i will post a pic for all to see on macrumors:p  :D

bass is great and strangely enough, goes well with guinness in a black and tan

in england, the bratender mixed it so one beer would float on top of the other, but in most us bars i have gone to, they just mix it all up and it pisses me off

not to mention, that a lot of us bars/pubs serve guinness super cold as if it was a budweiser

room temp is great for heavier beers and ales but even the english pubs i have frequented in the states are not that daring...sometimes i get the option of having a bottled guinness sitting on the shelf as room temp but there is nothing like room temp or only slightly chilled ale from the the tap...but it just doesn't fly here in the states

of course, i live in a small town and the big cities might have some real, authentic british pubs

Geez, awrc:

Your brother is lucky...

We've just had to pay nearly £7500 for dental work on my wife's teeth to a "thief" of a dentist - she's had her jaw brought forward a bit with the use of wire brackets, and has had braces for at least 18 months. Finally, some time next month, she'll be free of the metalwork - she's just had a bridge put in for £1600, to fill the gaps created by the braces (we had to haggle the dentist down from his initial asking price of £2200!!!).

It wasn't that her teeth were really bad, either (she looks like Shirley Manson from Garbage during her red-hair phase - only better looking of course!). Apparently, she was getting bad headaches, a clicking jaw and bad lower back pain because her jaw was out of alignment. I gotta say that she's never had a problem since she started the treatment, though.

And what has this got to do with beer, you may ask?

Well - anything that stands in the way of being able to buy a pint every once in a while definitely deserves a mention...

When I am in Portland, I'm always up for a Rubinator. You can find one at the McMenamins microbreweries throughout Oregon. The perfect Rubinator is three quarters Terminator Stout, and one quarter Ruby Ale. Don't look for it on the menu, you gotta ask... tasty.

When I am not in Portland, and dependent on availablity; Redhook IPA, Widmer Hop Jack, Heineken, or Guinness.

Mostly, however, I drink cocktails.
