Hey, a reed instrument's a reed instrument. As long as your embouchure is good you should have no problem.

The sound of the sax is just so rich and mellow...great stuff.

I am a professional bassoonist who play(s,ed) clarinet and saxophone for about 12 years now. Don't do much sax work except when I play musicals now. I'm slugging my way through a doctorate in music right now. Hopefully, I only have one more year left.

Just so you know, clarinet/sax/flute fingerings are very similar.

Good Luck to you!

Good luck.:p Anywayz, I don't think the bassist is the best musician in the band, I think its the drummer. I've never heard anyone handle odd time signatures like he does.

I'm a professional musician and play bass (main instrument) and can play a little piano, guitar and sing a bit.

I play guitar and bass. I also use (rather than play) a Midi keybord alongside with Cubase on my Pentium 3 laptop which sucks. Only an orange vocoder can eat up the 20% of the CPU. These sequencers seem like they need a Pentium 8 or a G7 to run well.

Hey! What's wrong with piano? :D

I held a Coronet for 5th grade summer band and made people believe there was a dying animal in the neighbourhood. I did much better at acoustic guitar, even though it didn't work out either.

I've played the piano since I was 6 - and started to play the guitar when I was 16. I'm 32 now, have been in a few bands, but now just coast along and play for my own enjoyment (and for my little boy, Oscar - he loves "The Wiggles", and "Gorillaz"!).

It's the ego thing, it comes with playing the trumpet

I'm also a member of the Internation Trumpet Guild (http://www.trumpetguild.org)

The trumpet is a very noble, prestigious instrument, and it has historical importance too... Trumpets have also been known to knock down walls :D

<sarcasm> I believe that it's the best instrument, and nobody has to agree, but then hey, nobody's perfect :p :D </sarcasm>

Professional musician here, too. Degree in Music Education, taught school band for a number of years, and now run a project studio. Guitar, bass (my main instrument), keyboard, most brass and woodwind instruments.

*sigh*...I came to this board to ESCAPE from a music message board, and look where I end up posting...

i played drums in the 1970s in grade school and in high school marching band in 1980-81

i have played guitar since 1976...steadily since 1981, bass once in a funk band in 1986, some drums to fill in, and i was a singer only for a band from 1995-98

but i don't read music or properly write it, so i am basically just a hobbyist, but not bad at guitar or piano

but i don't suspect i will ever be, or want to be, a professionally paid musician...but our band made $150 dollars once for a four hour gig and we split the booty up four ways...that's less than $10 dollars an hour each:rolleyes:

Hmmm....
I am a clasically trained Tenor.
I played trumpet, mellophone, valved trombone, slide trombone, euphonium, cornet, and I played flute a little bit. I finally settled on the french horn, Ahh my good ol' bessie. I finally had to put her away because my voice teacher said it was counterproductive<sigh>. I fully agree with my trunpet playing friend, brass instruments are the way to go. Versatility and lip strength are key. It takes real skill. I had to play some reed instruments for a Music Ed. class and it was really easy to play but not fun. The horn though is better than the trumpet in my opinion b/c your chops have to be more tightly controlled to play the pitches as the placement is much closer together. Which also means your aural musicianship skills have to be very good, ie godd relative pitch, near perfect pitch or perfect pitch. The same holds true for voice, which is why i chose it. I feel like i can make music more freely because i dont have to use some device to produce music. Music does, in the most pure sense comes from within me.

Ok im done with my essay now.

I took piano lessons thru elementary school, but I hated then so I stopped. Then I picked up the clarinet for a few years, but that also fell by the wayside. Now I am trying to learn the guitar (Takamine G-Series...531?) but don't have a lot of time for it until scholl starts up again. Would like to re-learn the clarinet but it isn't as versatile an instrument as I would like. But then again, maybe I will be the first rock clarinetist(?) :D

Euphonium (Yamaha YEP-201, not the best sounding horn I have ever played, but it gets me by), trumpet, a bit of piano and french horn.

I spent 2 years in marching band at Purdue. Aside from church and for the fun of it, I haven't played much since.

But comparing the difficulty of Brass vs. WWs is not going to get anywhere. Just because one is easier to make a sound out of than the other doesn't mean a thing. I admire brass players for their agility and ears, but man, have you ever tried playing Stravinsky or Prokofiev on a woodwind? Hell, even Tchaikovsky had some parts that will make your fingers curl! As a bassoonist, I have to use all 10 fingers (there are 13 keys for just the thumbs), and it ain't always easy.

I do LOVE the horn though. Man, imagine what Star Wars or ANY movie would be without them!:D

Besides piano, I play guitar (acoustic and classical) and the zither (it's sort of like an autoharp but not really - does that make sense?). No offense to the original topic starter, but piano is a great instrument once you get past the weeny "I took piano lessons in elementary school" pieces that a lot of people know how to play.

Ed.: Harpsichords are also fun :))))

Whoops, didn't mean to spam you...

For me, it's a 1972 Bach Stradivarius... I would do anything to get a good Mt. Vernon Bach (those of you who know about trumpets, you know what I mean ;) )

I play the piano and in fact it is awesome.

Those that say they do not like playing the piano must get into some good Beethoven. His 5th piano concerto is awesome.

I'm 15 and got a diploma (ATCL) last year.

My grandpa, dad, and brother play trombone... I have a friend who also plays bass trombone. You can tell when he hits the low notes, because he's louder than the whole tuba section...

PyroTurtle
Aug 17, 2002, 11:54 PM
only the tubas? heck, i usually drown out the band, and i don't have a mic! he he, just had to say that...
bass trombone is basically the most versitale horn i've ever played, which is why i continue to play because i can play in everything and every group i come across

so, what else do people play?! and hey, lets just throw a band together! who lives in southern california and wants to join me?

Bass Trombone... Hah the entire tromebone family's range is contained within the range of the french horn. I do dmit playing a primitive slide instrument is difficult though

um, not to be in a flame war/pissing contest thing, but i doubt you can play a double pedal Bb on a french horn...even the guys in the LA Phil can't play that low...
