Various reports have been coming in confirming the announcements of new PowerMacs tommorrow by Apple. As well as one unconfirmed report of price drops on the new machines. (take with a grain of salt) Apple/Ingram has discontinued the current line of PowerMacs.
Jaguar also appears to be ready for public use -- Xlr8yourmac.com (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com) posted a reader report that a new iBook came with a copy of Jaguar.

Whooo-Hooo, oh man I can't wait.
PS I know the head of Ingram Industries, he lives here in Nashville and is an old friend, I called him this morning to ask, but no call back. He's probably playing Polo in Miami anyway.

I would love to see the PowerMac line start at $1499-- though it's only a $100 price drop, $1499 has a much nicer ring than $1599. Maybe Apple will introduce computer-display bundle pricing; that would be very nice as well.

Not necessarily - the switch to DDR could mean a drop in memory cost, for example.
Looking forward to finding out anyway - no new PowerMac for me for at least a year, but I'm happy for those who'll be buying them. Jealous too, but mainly happy :D
Of course, once the new PowerMacs debut, we're not going to have any decent rumors to speculate on for quite a while.

First, Sorry to pop your happy bubble, but DDR costs significantly more than PC 133 style memory.. which is sorta annoying, but I'll pay for it easily !
Screw new rumors, I want my powermac, and I want it now.

oh well - I am ready, just wondering if Apple really is ? we are about to find out indeed . It shall be a long night. If nothing happens tomorrow 3 things will happen for me: first I will buy an iMac 17" (which is plenty of power for me in reality - but I was ready to buy a kick ass top of the line PM); second I will be astonished as to how clueless everyone is about Apple; and third I won't be able to justify anymore Apple desktop's pathetic perfomance wrt intel/amd systems. So for those who need up to date "performance" I would not blame them for switching. And how could Apple continue with its "switching campaign"?
However, I have to admit I am optimistic - I conitue to think of SJ et all at MWNY saying many times how many cool things are coming from Apple...

I was with a buddy this weekend from Genentech and he said that a coworker was all worked up about Apple shipping him a new G5. Another co worker responed saying, "that they don't have a G5," he said, "that's what they're shipping him." Apparentley Genentech does testing for Apple. I'm not sure if this is a test machine for something to be released in January or one of the new PowerMacs.
I'm also aware that Genentech will be switching to OS X shorty.
How credible is this? I have no idea, but he does have a PhD and he has no reason to tell me otherwise.

What model do you have? i have the 667 version
about the powermacs I hope to get one next year and I hope to get a combo of the 22" cinema and a new G4. I'm hoping there will be a new promotion and maybe a new 19" widescreen introduced. This will bring the 22's price down. As for the PM we should see them at 10am eastern time tomorrow

My brand new straight from Apple 17" iMac I picked up at the Apple store on Saturday night did NOT have 10.2 on it. I don't believe this news factoid. Sorry.
Of course, I also could't believe my ears when I the rep at the store Saturday told me that they would not have the 10.2 update available for people that recently purchased the new iMac, and that I would indeed have to get my "free" update via Apple. I know two things, for $20 shipping, they better sent it overnight and I better have it on release day!

The problem w/ the xServe is that it's not true DDR, it's DDR to chipset, but then the bandwith between the chipset and the CPU is at slow standard bus speed, if it was DDR speed the whole way thru, which we're hoping they've done, it would rock.
Now, I've asked this before and I'll ask it again.
Does anyone know how we will be able to tell weather the DDR is DDR-->chipset only or DDR to chipset to CPU ? please someone tell me?

Actually Indiana is the only one on EST. I live in Indiana and we're on EST. Everyone else is on EDT right now because they have Daylight Savings Time and we don't. (Eastern Daylight Time vs. Eastern Standard Time). EST is actually the same as CDT (Central Daylight Time) right now. Until those states with Daylight Savings Time switch back.

Yeah, so they may. I know it's a little technicality. And it seems stupid that it actually is that way. For us it's a big deal though because we even have parts of our own state that are on CDT vs being on EST. When states that are on CDT switch back to CST, part of our state changes but the rest of us stay on EST and are then in sync with the states that were on EDT that switched back to EST. Makes it very confusing.
Anyway, just wanted to point out that that one guy wasn't totally out of his gourd.

August 13 seems to make sense. I was talking with a person who was interested in buying an 800 MHz G4 PowerMac. I warned her that the new models were coming out very soon, but she wanted to go for the deal since she could get $300 off of a 17" flat panel display, and that offer ends the 13th, I believe. So, it looks like the end of that offer might herald the release date of the new Macs.
In some ways, it would have been nicer if Apple had announced the new G4's at the NY Expo, but I'm guessing that if they had done that, they might have ended up sacrificing their current Pro line-up, which wouldn't be good for their sales, especially since the higher priced machines tend to bring in a much higher profit.

Sorry, I'm afraid you're incorrect. PDT, MDT, CDT, and EDT are standard nomenclature for the time zones when Daylight Savings is in effect. Take a look at this site (http://www.worldtimezone.net/time-usa1.htm).

Steve Jobs and the CEO of Genetech are neighbors. Apparently the CEO is sold and keeps trying to push the entire company over to macs. There is a lot of reisitance to this (as you would expect from a bunch of corporate PC users). How deep this working relationship goes is a good question. I remember reading they use macs to do some pretty extensive number crunching for their research. Does this mean they get first look at the new stuff to see how much better it is and how well it handles real world heavy use?
I know a higher up in Genetech and I can ask what he knows. I doubt he'll have anything b/c he is here in CT and not in the CA labs. He's also one of the guys who does not like the CEO's push to use Macs. But if he happens to have any laying around the office, I may have to stop by to say hi with my spycam ;)

Actually, you are the pinhead who's smoking something. The "Standard" in Eastern Standard Time is meant to differentiate Eastern Standard Time from Eastern Daylight Time.
I assume you know what Daylight Savings Time is. (and yes, the "Daylight" in Eastern Daylight Time means that the time is given with the Daylight Savings adjustment.
also, it's friggin' not "frikin"

I don't see him listed as buying 50,000 shares, but certainly don't doubt it. Seems like it would make sense to let them play with new stuff. But it seems more likely that Apple will follow true to themselves and keep anything new a big secret.

Looks to me like some little boy had a wet dream last night. No way is this information true. Apple would never upgrade so much at one time. New PowerMacs from 1.2-1.6GHz; new displays at drastically reduced prices; Powerbooks upgraded AGAIN, this time with faster speed and DDR! And then to suggest the pricing will be lower than the current PowerMacs. HAH! Suckers. No way. yourdailymac.com is accomplishing one thing -- increasing the hits on its website.

I was at the Apple store here in Columbus over the weekend and they had a 17" iMac running Jaguar. Unfortunatly I didn't have much time to check it out completely but it did have spring loaded folders and Sherlock was like Watson....

Most of the Macs here (at Genentech) have already been switched over to OS X. Most beige machines have been trashed. The switch is causing quite a bit of confusion to the average users, who don't necessarily know that X is really a different OS, and not just a pregressive improvement like 7 --> 8 --> 9
I'm guessing that Genentech probably got an advanced look at hardware like the XServe, but I doubt anyone doing research in the labs ever gets anything but standard issue Apple hardware. Right now, if you need a new desktop and ask for a Mac, you have the choice of a 700 MHz iMac, or an 800 MHz G4 tower.
But if he happens to have any laying around the office, I may have to stop by to say hi with my spycam
Well, it's not really true that there's a big push to use Macs here. The overall percentage of Macs in the Mac/PC mix is going down. A few years back, speciallized apps used to be spread around pretty well between PC/Mac/SGI/Sun. The trend in the scientific industry now is for these apps to be mostly Windows based.

I hope we see some Drastic price reductions in the UK!
In the past, regardless of which model you compare prices on, it's only worked out at about $100 or so more over here, something I've put down to fluctuating exchange rates and/or duty payments.
Fast : £1350.98 (£1149 excl. VAT) / US equivelent : $1,751.76 * ( + $152.76 )
Faster : £1996.33 (£1699 excl. VAT) / US equivelent : $2,590.29 * ( + $291.29 )
Fastest : £2583.83 (£2199 excl. VAT) / US equivelent : $3,352.59 * ( + $353.59 )
Ultimate : £3535.58 (£3009 excl. VAT) / US equivelent : $4,587.52 * ( + $488.52 )
* The prices of the current range on the UK Apple Store according to the Financial Times Currency Converter (http://mwprices.ft.com/custom/ft-com/currency.asp) at 8.30pm GMT today
Even if we don't see a reduction in the US retail prices, I expect one in the UK taking into account the Dollar value.
$2199 for the mid range seems a steal to me, I'd probably be paying the equivelent of $2500 for it even before VAT and I wouldn't be happy with anything I've overpaid for. No matter how powerful, stylish or useful to me it might be.
I have to say this though...

(08/12/02) : And Finally Breaking News on New Powerboks was leaked to yourdailymac.com early this morning. And we are posting the stats that we recieved below.
Fast:
800 MHz G4
256 MB DDR RAM
40 GB HD
Combo Drive
ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB
15.2" screen
$2399
Fastest:
1 GHz G4
512 MB DDR RAM
60 GB HD
SuperDrive
ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB
15.2" screen
$2999
Build-to-order options:
Up to 2 GB DDR RAM
SuperDrive ($200 more than Combo)
AppleCare
Standard features:
Gigabit Ethernet
GigaWire
USB 2.0
AirPort & Bluetooth built-in
new black Titanium case (silver BTO)
THIS IS PURE B.S.!!!
Why? This is saying that there is superdrive. Even if apple releases a superdrive, its only an extra 200 bucks? Why don't they just make it standard then? And they're also going to upgrade the ram AND the graphics card. Thats a little too many revisions.
Lets lists the updates:
GIGABIT firewire
USB 2
Superdrive
DDRram
Built in bluetooth
Speed increase
New ********* colors? :D
Oh yeah, and the last rev was less than 4 months ago!;)
That said, if apple releases it at that price point, they'll be so friggin' backordered! I'll buy two! :D :D
THIS IS PURE BS!!!

Hell, Yeah! _I talked to an Apple Authorised Retailer today and was informed that the G4 Quicksilvers with Dual 1.6Gb Processors will be announced on August 15th. He said the prices of the 800, 933, and Dual 1gig will drop by atleast $200.00 each.
Posted: Aug. 01 2002,23:18 __
------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I was reading through, I remembered a few other things that he said... _The sys bus was going to double from 133 mhz to 266 mhz, and it was also going to use DDR RAM. The top of the line would be the Dual 1.6 gigahertz at around the same price that the dual 1 gig is now. It will come preinstalled _withe 10.2. But the system itself probably wouldn't ship until beg. -> middle of Sept. The guy I talked to was the owner of the biggest Apple Retailer in the State. We buy a lot of equipment from him, and he tends to know about quite a lot before it's released publicly. I just thought I'd be nice this once and share the info. Don't believe me? Wait until August 15th.

While the figures that yourdailymac.com posted seem a bit unreasonalble... if you look back at all rumors over the last several months, everything they've posted makes sense. This could mean the hype Apple was spreading about their machine performance increases were true. OR it could mean that someone made all this crap up based on old rumors.

As much as I'd like to believe it, I don't think those specs are correct. At least, not entirely. Why? I find it very hard to believe Apple would offer USB2.0, at least now - since they are on a big FireWire push. Also, from what I understand, the Radeon 9700 won't be out for a few months. Would Apple really release this as an option when it's not going to be available within a "reasonable" time?
Wow - my first post :)
In any event, I just bought a Quicksilver 733Mhz and that will (have to) do for a year or so. Before I get bashed for buying it just before an update......I got it from CompUSA (no comment) for only $999. I have it booting into OS X v1.5, iTunes 3, 640MB memory.....I'll probably add the Radeon 9000 Pro at the end of the month.
For everyone else, I really hope what you want comes out tomorrow :) I'll get one next year......I'm content with the previous generation for a bargain.....this time. The money I saved, I spent on an iBook 700Mhz/Combo drive. So, I'm happy!

I hate to tell you guys but with the bus on the current powermac line or even the "DDR" bus on the xserve a dual proc 1.6ghz g4 machine will still be crippled.
Apple doesn't have a raw mhz problem they simply have procs that are absolutely *starved* for bandwith. If this isn't fixed in an update don't expect to see much boost in performance. To check this look at the differences in performance across the g4 line... you will see that "raw" cpu power is falling dramatically as clock speed goes up.
With that said, a dual 1.6ghz box would still be fricken awesome on anything that fit in cache. I would imagine general "feel" would be blistering.

Just goes to show you, people aren't happy whatever the pricetag is. Even when it isn't free. With all sorts of bundles offered here: http://www.macprices.com/ and many of those coming from places that charge no tax and some even no shipping the only real ripoff is what happens to those who don't shop around. $20 for Jaguar, he should be glad! I wish I could have paid $20 for Jaguar, though I'm pretty glad there is the government employee discount of $64.50.

If their "stats" turned out to be true, it could be the greatest day in Mac history since the introduction of the original Mac
But this little blurb at the end of their post bother me:
Keep in mind that these stats may not be totally accurate and you shouldnt base your purchase on the stats we provide. Also the stats we provide are purely speculation.
Regardless of whether they match other rumors or not, it's tooo good to be true...

Currently the lower end Power Mac can be updated to a SuperDrive for an extra $200. Granted, this is not a slim SuperDrive, but it's not unreasonable. (Although it does make it appear that they are attempting to make their specs. look more reasonable by copying current upgrade prices)

Yes - I had to wait over three months for the GForce3 BTO option to actually ship, so there IS a precedent.
Anyway, we'll all know within 24 hours, but isn't this speculation all a part of a rumours web-site??

If Apple does announce the new PowerMacs tomorrow, I'd say that it would be by 9:00am earliest, 10:00am latest eastern. This is time enough for either the trading floors or the east coast Apple Store openings.
As for the specs on yourdailymac.com, while they may be nothing but BS, would make a lot of people extremely happy if true.

New Power Mac G4 systems to be unveiled tomorrow with speeds up to 1.25GHz
August 12 - 16:33 EDT__Apple will unveil new Power Mac G4 systems tomorrow, MacMinute has learned. Sources inform us that three configurations will be offered: dual-867MHz (US$1,699), dual-1GHz ($2,499), and dual-1.25GHz ($3,299). The dual-1GHz and dual-1.25GHz models will feature ATI Radeon 9000 series graphics cards; additional system-specific details are not available. The dual-867MHz configuration is slated to ship by the end of the week, while the new dual-1GHz model will ship towards the end of the month. Availability of the high-end dual-1.25GHz model is being pegged at sometime in September. Current Power Mac G4 systems will be reduced in price as follows: 800MHz ($1,299), 933MHz ($1,499) and dual-1GHz ($2,199). Additionally, Apple will introduce a SuperDrive-equipped eMac for $1,499, sources say, and will reduce the price of CD-RW and Combo Drive iMacs by $100 to $1,299 and $1,499, respectively.

That's too many revisions? In my opinion, it's not nearly enough. Apple desperately needs to catch up with the speeds of pee-cee's, and they're not going to do it by having a 200mhz jump every 6 months. If the pee-cee industry could advance so quickly, who's to say that Apple can't?

I really hope we see something better than 1.25Ghz. That means that since the Voyager (PPC7450) macs were released, every update since has been predicted within weeks by someone over clocking the highest rated model :
2001 : 733 OC'd to 867
2001 : 867 OC'd to 1Ghz
2002 : 1Ghz OC'd to 1.2Ghz
2002 : ?
I wonder if motorola are going to release a revision of the G4 that has the same almost 50% speed bump we got when the Voyager chip came out ?
500MHz increased to 733Mhz would have been about as believable at the time as 1Ghz increased to 1.4 or even 1.6Ghz as some have claimed (without any proof).
To me, what apple release this month defines what I can expect from my next mac, a 1Ghz - Dual 1.25Ghz lineup would mean I'd have to buy a brand new mac when I have the cash next year. A line up with a single 1.2Ghz as the mid range or low end now gives me a very good chance that by the time I have about £1,100 I could pick up an end of life model from the range released this month instead of waiting for them to bring out a 1.2Ghz model next year and spending £1,350 on it (assuming both the low end is going to be 1.2Ghz and Apple are going to carry on overcharging in the UK).
I've had my 300Mhz G3 for over 4 years, the combined cost of the mac, modem, monitor, VRAM upgrade and CD writer is more than £1700.
I know I can get the current entry level model for under £1,300 at some places and it has all the extras I've bought for my mac plus firewire/USB, faster RAM, faster HD controller, faster graphics hardware and more expansion slots.
The problem I have with buying a mac that isn't 1.2Ghz+ with DDR is that with the current motherboard, and after over 4 years, the main application I use only performs 2.5 times faster than my 300Mhz Beige G3. I need more of a performance increase than that if I'm going to shell out over a grand on a new mac. I got my G3 in early '98, around the time the ugly blue G4s with the yo-yo mouse came out. It's not worth buying a new one 5 years later in early 2003 unless I get something that performs aswell as 5 years progress should.

No, it isn't. Most states in the U.S. observe Daylight Savings Time. Unfortunately, not all states observe DST. The solution is quite simple: learn how to use Universal Time. Under this system, there are no time zones and no DST. No matter where on Earth you happen to be, the time is always the same. A conference call scheduled for 1200 hours in Washington, D.C. is the same call scheduled in California at 1200 hours.
