My wife got me a 'Cube for my birthday!
Sadly, she got it bundled with Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc from Toys R Us, clearly thinking about how much fun our 3 year old son would have. She also got me Donkey Konga, so it's not like I don't have a game to play on it. I like percussion, and have some rhythym games for my PS2, so that's a cool selection for her to have made.
In our area, TRU is having their annual "Buy 2 get 3rd game free" promo this week, so I thought I'd head out and blow some cash on a few of the $20 Player's Choice type games. I figure $80 will get me six decent $20 games to start a library.
So, which 6 GC games would you suggest?

Wind Waker all the way. Best game ever for the GameCube.
I like Mario Kart DD, it's okay. I dont think its as fun as the N64 one though.

D'oh. I guess it would help to know what kind of games I play. I don't have hours-long chunks of time to play, so I have to play in short burst, usually less than 1-1.5 hours at a time. RPG's are too much of an investment, so I tend to stick to racing (Burnout 3, Wipeout), and action (Prince of Persia, 007 EON, Beyond Good & Evil, Metal Gear) mostly. I have a soft spot for vampires, so I have evry Legacy of Kain release for PS1 and PS2, as well as other gothic titles like Devil May Cry, Buffy Chaos Bleeds, and Medievil. Platform game are always cool. Jak, Crash, and Ratchet are great.
I'm not into RTS, FPS, RPG, or wrestling at all.
Super Mario Sunshine is a slam dunk.
Is Twin snakes just a re-hash of the two MGS games for PS1/2?

A great Adult game, kinda like a mix of Resident Evil and Myst,
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Its a gem thats often passed over, its a bit slow, but has an excellent storyline.

If you head to TRU you may find 2-packs of Gamecube games. I found a pack of Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for $30, along with a 2-pack of Super Monkey Ball and SMB2 for $30. Great deals.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are good games. A bit short, but fun. Not perfect though. :D

another good one is soul calibur II. If I had to pick 6 games, heres what they would be:
Super Smash Bros
Metroid Prime
Eternal Darkness
Soul Calibur II
Pikmin
Windwaker
all old, cheap solid games. SCII would be good for someone with your playing habits, since stages are quick and last about 3 minutes each.

I received a GC through a raffle, and went through about the same problem. Currently I have only two games for the Cube. Twin snakes, which is frankly awesome. (it is a remake of the famous metal gear solid on the PS1). As well as Prince of Persia. I loved that game, not sure it will be as great for you unless you played the original on the PC, or Mac... Just some thoughts, congrats on the new Cube.

Thanks to all for the great suggestions.
This is what I'm thinking right now:
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Bros.
Wind Waker
Super Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart Double Dash
Viewtiful Joe
Although the following look good, too:
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Wario World
I already have most of the cross platform games mentioned in this thread for my PS2, so I don't need them for the 'cube. I am also thinking that I'll leave the darker, more adult games for the PS2, leaving the 'cube as the [mostly] kid-friendly platform that my boy will be allowed to play on.
Wavebird is going on my XMas list for sure.
Any other suggestions?

I personally would recommend the Pelican G3 wireless controller for your GC over the Wavebird... For one thing, the G3 has a rumble feature (which can be turned on/off to save the battery). Ive got one and I like it a lot... just my opinion, though.

What to suggest to someone new to the cube.....Hmmmmm.
As you already have ps2/x then you have the ability to go for good quality games only available for the cube with out missing out on those cross platform games.
So here's my list.
Quick Blast Type Games
------
Mario Kart: (Lads night favorite)
Viewtiful Joe
Super Smash Brothers
Mario Sunshine
Mario Golf (sequel soonish)
Pikmin (sequel soonish)
Star Wars : Rogue Leader
More Involved
------
Zelda: Wind Waker
Eternal Darkness
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Beyond Good and Evil
Metroid Prime (sequels out soonish)

Since I insist on reliving my childhood, I am very fond of
Mega Man Anniversary Collection
Zelda Anniversary Edition.
I also enjoy
Burnout 2 and
Mario Kart DD (both have several mentions)

my favorites are:
SSX tricky and SSX3
two excellent snowboarding games. most will say that ssx3 is the best, but tricky has its own charm (its a little more ridiculous than SSX3)
super smash brothers melee
this'll keep you busy for awhile in single player, and forever for multiplayer.
metroid prime
huge, beautiful puzzle-based first person shooter
super monkey ball 1 & 2
SMB2 is an improvement, but both are worth getting. i suppose you could call it a puzzle game, but that wouldn't do it justice. its just wonderful (plus they have party game sbuilt in too!)
crazy taxi
this game is only like $10. its worth $10. its fun
stay away from enter the matrix. its fun to jump around and dodge bullets, but its very repetitive, short, and has no replay value.

If you like RPGs you should go with Tales of Symphonia or Paper Mario 2. I don't have Paper Mario 2 yet, but ToS is a great game... and its long as hell too.
Another great great GREAT game is Beyond Good and Evil... this is probably my favorite.

I have BG&E for PS2, and it is awesome.
I'm not really into RPG's, mainly due to playing time constraints. Job, wife, kids, house really cut into my desired 20 hours/wk of game time

I haven't been disspointed at all with the Gamecube's game collection. Some of my favorites so far are:
Metroid Prime
Tales of Symphonia
Viewtiful Joe
Soul Calibur II
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Zelda: Windwaker
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (if you can find it...)
Also, I would reccomend these other titles, which flew under the radar of most people, but are quite good IMHO:
Ikaruga (arcade shooter at its best... incredible, if at times frustrating game!)
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy
Beyond Good and Evil
I'm currently looking forward to getting Baten Kaitos, Metroid Prime 2, and the new Paper Mario.

I had forgotten about Eternal Darkness. That game is simply awesome!
It is one of the very, very few games that I have played through several times - I beat choosing all three colors at the beginning.
Good recomendation!!

Here is my game library for the Cube.
- Soul Calibur 2
- Super Smash Bros. melee
- Zelda: Wind Waker
- Mario Kart: Double Dash
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Master Quest
- Metroid Prime
- Mega Man Anniversary Collection
All of those are great games. I'd have to agree with everyone else's recommendations as well.
Also, don't forget The new Zelda (http://www.nintendo.com/gamemini?gameid=54610f14-1826-4d46-9981-8f72874aee2e&) game coming out in 2005 and Metroid Prime: Echos (http://www.nintendo.com/gamemini?gameid=m-Game-0000-1699&).

I would also like to recommend pikmin and/or pikmin 2, as I own both of these games, both are destined to be classics.
Also, You would LOVE dakar 2, a little heard-of rally car game- I picked it up a sam's for 12 bucks, and is loads of fun.

forget burnout 2, get Need For Speed Underground. I have both and while burnout is fun there isn't much to it. Oh, and NFSU 2 is about to come out...
A great rpg is Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance..old game but great. Then again, I love Diablo...
SSX3 rocks, but don't forget any of the Tony Hawk games. I got a console just to play the Tony Hawk games...
If your looking for exclusive (to gamecube)...
Eternal Darkness is the best Nintendo-made game out, imo. I actually had to stop playing a few times because it freaked me out too much(play the game with surround sound and the lights off). Much better than the Resident Evil games imo. I just can't stand the control scheme for the RE games.
Metroid Prime is awesome if you like FPS.
If you like the sims, then get Animal Crossing aka Animal Crack. My sister was obsessed with the game. As in she would go fishing for hours at a time...
I wasn't that thrilled with Pikmin. Don't get me wrong, its a fine game...but just didn't do it for me. Same goes for SSBM.
Other good games are Simpsons Hit and Run (basically grand theft auto but with the simpsons and without the hookers), Monkey Ball, WarioWarez(?), NBA Street, and Prince of Persia. Oh and Godzilla(mindless but fun) and Def Jam Wrestling.

Pikmin is excellent. I played it all the time when I had a GC. Its sequel is due now. Also Mario Sunshine - one of the few games I have bothered to play all the way through.

I picked up a few cheap games for the Gamecube with the Buy 2 Get 1 Free offer at Toys R Us, but the pickings were kinda slim. I ended up with Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, and Super Monkey Ball 2. Not too bad for $40 total.
Thanks for all the advice.

Super Monkey Ball 2 gets really freaking difficult. Takes a lot of patience and luck to get through. I just picked up Paper Mario a couple of days ago, and I'm loving it.

MonkeyBall, all the way :)
I sadly don't have a game cube, but play monkey ball on my friends all the time, haha :D
