They're making ****loads of money, more than they can even count, so they've advised all Macrumors members to send their donations to me instead, to help ease their accounting burden.

From what I've heard, macrumors.com has recently broke even. That was a while back during the ads debate but I think that it is now turning a small profit.

Well I heard that MacRumors is in a financial crises. To cope with the expenses, they will reportedly be requiring all accounts to upgrade to the .Macrumors service for a cost of $100 per year. My sources did not yet indicate wether there will be a scaled back version of .MacRumors for free. Users will have until Feb 12, 2003 to upgrade.

Not yet... costs > earnings for 2 1/2 years.
Things are heading in the right direction, however... but due to many one time costs this month (new server setups, paying for the overlap of two providers), spending is more than earnings still... but like I said, things are heading in the right direction.
