Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I've tried searching out the answer to this question, but couldn't find any recent postings.

I've just received a new 2009 3.06ghz Intel iMac Core Duo 1TB ATI Radeon computer. My internet connection is dial-up (not Ethernet or WiFi). I just discovered there's no phone connection on the new iMac, and that I need a USB modem.

The computer booklet recommends the Apple External USB Modem. I found this one on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MA034Z-External-V-2-Modem/dp/B000C6TLDO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1241127415&sr=8-1

But the customer reviews suggest it may not be truly compatible with Intel machines. It may cause system freezes. I found a thread on this forum that mentioned the problem may have to do with using an unpowered USB hub. I won't be using the keyboard or any hub. The USB modem will be plugged directly into the back of my iMac.

Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, is there another USB modem that will?

Thanks!

I just bought one for my iMac to use as a fax, and found also that it does not work. The hookup is simple enough and since I've used the internal modem on my other macs before for faxing I knew the setup and I was connected in about 2 minutes. To test it I called the phone number attached to my mac and the fax answered, good to go I thought. That was the first and last time it ever connected. I could never get it to answer again and every time I tried to send a fax I got 'waiting for external modem'. I have it directly into my iMac so power is not the problem. I think as I read on other sites that the intel macs just don't support this modem. I'm returning it but I still need a fax modem

I'm new to forum, and I am having the same problem. External modem works intermittantly. Right now it will not connect at all. It has worked in the past. I am wondering if there is a problem with Intel Macs and this modem.

Gee,

I don't know about the Intel iMac, but the Apple USB modem works fine on my 2009 Intel Mini.

External Modems:
Interface Type: USB
Modulation: V.92
Firmware Version: 2.2
Country Code: B5
Driver Name: MotorolaSM56KUSB.kext (v1.5.10)

Peace to you all,
C. Livingstone
