Is there a simple way to remove subtitles on a m4v without having to re-encode the entire movie
If we're talking a Handbrake-encoded .m4v, the answer is no... the subtitles are burnt into the image.

Typically they are not hardcoded. You switch it off in the app somewhere.

They are hardcoded if they were added by handbrake
