Feh. The writer actually had the balls to call Gates and Ballmer "innovative," at which point I decided to go read something less based in fiction.

You should've kept reading. He then cites Microsoft's creative definition of "innovative" (meaning to take somebody else's idea and be the first to try and make a product out of it) and uses the term extremely sarcastically throughout the rest of the article.
The bulk of the article points out three areas of Microsoft's "innovation" and shows how they not only made products out of other people's ideas, but how they then (after seeing how it will affect Windows XP licenses) sabotaged the product and ultimately killed it.
You may want to read the whole article again, instead of tuning out after seeing one magic buzzword.

This is a good article. The author does a good job at pointing out how $ driven Micro$oft is.
