Hey all,
I was wondering if I was the only person who uses a clamshell at all. I use a 366/576mb/10gigHDD to surf, play itunes with my Soundsticks, play DVd's on the go, check Mail, and use Word. Upgrading it with 576 megs of ram from 320 really helps. Feel free to share your Clamshell stories and opinions, upgrade tips, modding projects and your Clammie names (mine is Lil' Clammie and the iMac G5 is Stevie;))Long live the Clamshell and all who use one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couple of clamshells, one Lime 466SE, maxed out RAM, 60 GB HD, and one 366 Graphite, fairly stock.

I love them, coolest looking laptop EVER! Unfortunately, don't find much use for them, GPU is just too limiting. Will probably put them up for sale soon, can't afford to keep stuff just to have.

I use mine as my main laptop, and because they are so cool looking it seems so worth it. Do you have the Ram maxed out in the 466 Se? If not, i would do so because with your upgraded had drive it would feel like a much newer computer (as mine did) My dad uses a brand new MBP Unibody and says he notices no huge speed diference. Mom calls the indigo color "precious"
I can't bring myself to lookat an iBook G4. The other day I did,and Clammie got so mad he gave me the pinweel for two minutes!:)

I have a 300 MHz Blueberry Clamshell. Just for looks mostly, as it refuses to work with my wireless adapters. (Working on that issue.) But it's a good machine, if not a a tad heavy.

Yeah, I maxed out the RAM. My main idea in obtaining these was for my kids to have a laptop to take on trips, play games, watch digital movies. Kind of hit a stump, iTunes movies won't play, big pauses and stuttering.

BTW the clamshells get amazing battery life... I get 4+ hours!

Funny, I just got a 300 orange and had an Airport card, threw it in and it sees the network but refuses the password?

I always wanted one. Ever since the class below us in school all got one for free for a school project, but we didn't. Damn I was jealous seeing them all walk about with the spiffy clamshell ibooks.
I always wanted the green :o

I picked up my 366 indigo in late summer 2003 for a little more than $400. First thing I had to do was get a battery and 256mb of RAM for it and about 2 weeks later the logicboard died. This ended up costing another $400 (the shop that diagnosed it took it upon themselves to fix it without my consent  ) and it worked fine for a long time after that. I opened up the screen and made the logo on the back glow and everything. Well, after years of service the battery has been completely fried for about 3 years now, the sound gave out completely, the CD drive reads discs when it feels like it, the screen is really dim, and the power port is getting flaky. Aside from all those things, it still boots up and runs 10.4 and sees use about 2x a week.

nice notebook collection. I'm just one pismo away from having the same lot as you. Real shame about the ibook dying. The blueberry one i just bought my girlfriend seems to have a dodgy trackpad (every now and then it thinks you re touching it when you aren't!).

Well Chris, MY CLAMSHELL IS MY MAIN LAPPY!:D It is quite fun. Once a guy came up to me and said, "Whoa. The Macbook comes in blue now?"I told him to check the AppleStore, they should be there:D

Whoever gets 4 hour battery life, I get 3.5 hours. The EBay guy calls this a "well-worn battery"

I'd use one for a week without giving it a second thought. However, if you're just looking at buying one, I really would suggest going for the 466MHz models with DVD-ROM drives. I really wish mine had that extra 100MHz, especially under Tiger. The DVD drive just makes it much easier to install software and you can do movies obviously.

You may have to downgrade your wireless network to be compatible with 802.11 b . Most newer Airports run on G only or G/N mixed mode. Some are only N now as well. Weird to think of b as something of the past.

I finished my Clamshell!!!!!It's now 466Mhz graphite SE in a Indigo case with a 256MB card in it with the 64MB internal and a DVD drive and a 80GB HD and Airport!!! and 10.3 it's going to bv\e a good computer.!!!!Pics later!:D And a 4 hour battery!Oh,the reason I switched cases was because the Graphite was in bad shape.

here's the geekiest thing I've done in a while.Installing OS 9 on a taken apart clamshell so I can put the HD in another clamshell.:D It's pretty quick for only using the 64MB ram without the extra chip and stuff.I now will use the HD,mobo and CD drive in others now that I know it works well.:D

A Airport Card,
Battery,
Yo-yo power supply for my iBook 300MHz Blueberry. I know the battery will come first so every day i'll turn it on a for a minute to make sure it doesn't die.

Later on probably @ Christmas I'll ask for a HDD and DVD ROM and Ram for it since i don't need it to work properly.

Oh and since I'm geeky my Dog Posed for Apple back in the day and he didn't gain a winkle!!

For WPA-PSK to work you need 10.3.9 Panther. On 10.1 I believe it only works with unsecured and i think 40bit WEP I dunno:rolleyes: And safari only works in panther however the earliest version of Camino based on firefox engine would work. I've had troubles with my network and 10.1 Basically on 10.1 theres no option for DHCP with a manual address which is what I use. I don't even think theres that option in Jaguar:(

Since 10.3.9 doesn't support firefox 3 or Safari 4 how about the latest version of Opera, At the bottom it says 100% change it to 60 or 70% then no more horiziontal scrolling

If you cant get MacOS 10.3.9, get up to 10.1.5, and get the "Airport 3.0.4 for 10.1.5 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120200)". That's as far as you can go. Don't be surprised if the dmg volume is called Airport 2.0.8, it's still v3.0.4.

Even Safari 1.0 needs 10.2 or better as GeekOFComedy already mentioned. Firefox 1.0.7 (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0.7/mac/en-US/Firefox%201.0.7.dmg) and Opera 7.54 (http://arc.opera.com/pub/opera/mac/754u2/en/om_en_7.54u2.dmg) is the highest for 10.1.5 IIRC.

Probably all academic since you're getting 10.3.9. :o

hello there, I haver a whole loads of Clams and I really love them. I have had every model made. My 466 boots into tiger in less than 2 mins so I think yours must be really slow if it takes 5 mins. I have run Tiger on my Tangerine and Blueberry models and it runs really well. You have to install Tiger on the hard drive externally before you put it into the non firewire models but once in there it runs fine.

i love my clamshell. i upgraded the ram to 576mb. it runs beautifully, i even put photoshop 7 on it. it also dual boots between os 9 and OS X Tiger. I put photoshop on the os 9 partition because thats more native to the clamshell. its a great mac, one of the best ever made.

I use my Graphite every day at home as well as at work. It's the 466Mhz FireWire model, so it has all the bells and whistles. I've upgraded to Tiger, a 120GB hard drive and 576MB of RAM. I regularly run Firefox, Mail, iTunes 8, Photoshop CS and a VNC connection to our Windoze network via Chicken of the VNC and airport. In fact, that's what I'm running right now. It still works great with the old Graphite Base Station. The biggest limitation I have (besides speed) is the 800x600 res I'm stuck with. I really wish that I could see the WHOLE webpage at once. The speed affects video, and GarageBand skips on me quite a bit, but all in all it's a great little machine. I've been thinking about an upgrade, but right now I don't want to make the investment in a newer machine.

Why not buy a intel mac don't stay in the dark ages. With all those computers you have you could probably grab a macbook (Kind of)

Powermac worth $210
eMac worth at "least" $220 for a collector
And all those iBook clamshells would be worth another $200

So $630 and some of your own cash you could probably buy a end of life macbook or something for a deal

While I, like you, love PowerPC Macs, my first being a 12" PowerBook about a year ago, I'm telling you that if you can find a cheapo first or second revision MacBook on eBay, and can handle the slight increase in cost over your projected PowerBook, you'd be committing a sin not to go for the former.

Intel Macs are far superior, even if they're not as charming as PPC. My 2 cents.

I understand you, even though I have a Mac Mini that smokes all my powermacs, I could not bear to sell my powermacs, especially my 733Mhz Digital Audio version (even though I got it for free from my father's boss :p)

As for Clamshells, once they drop down to around $50 from $100, i may consider getting one.

Hi I have one. It's a Graphite 466Mhz model. I've upgraded it to 576MB ram 120GB hard drive and am using a Belkin F5D 8053 wireless N USB adapter for fairly quick internet. Runs Tiger no issues. Plays MPEGs MP3s and DVD's . It's not bad for a 10 year old laptop. I like the look too. I use a hub and plug in flash drives, usb mice etc. Other than Youtube, it does most things I want to do. And I really don't waste too much time on Youtube anyhow. If I really feel the need I use another computer. So count me in as a Clamshell fan.
( I now have a 300Mhz Blueberry Clammy as well)

Hey all,
I was wondering if I was the only person who uses a clamshell at all.

I was just wondering what games will play well on an old Clamshell 300Mhz.
I wish to load a bunch of games for my 8 year old nephew on to one and give it to him as a gift. I would like to try to get a number of playable games on it. Can anyone give me some suggestions please?
Thanks for your help.

I love my clamshell iBook enough to replace the hard drive with two CompactFlash cards, a process which cost me more than the computer is worth just to buy the parts. But now I have a solid state drive which is totally silent with no vibration. I love having a fanless quiet computer.

Here is a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfhmvVaW4f8) of me showing the performance of loading a few web pages. The battery was replaced two years ago, and still has enough juice to last most of the day on one charge.

Mine is a 366MHz so it's not the fastest one, but I prefer the matte exterior plastic finish and the rubberized trim on the older models. It's a great around-the-house computer.

My only complaint is that Tunes 9 won't run on OS X Panther, so I can't sync my iPod Touch with it.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, after doing a lot of research on these computers. And i really like my iBook Clamshell. It boots into 10.4 "Tiger" without a problem. I don't use it as my main computer, nor secondary for that matter. I primarily use it to run my favorite non-windows programs, for example my favorite IRC client: Colloquy (This... program.... is... awesome!). And i also like to take it with me, mainly to show it to people and hear their comments (also to use it ofcourse). Haven't heard a single negative comment about it. (Except for my dad tough, he thinks it's ugly, i obviously disagree.) Some people actually have mistaken it for a new Apple laptop. Weird how that only appears to happen with Apple laptops eh? ;)

I found this website very useful: ibookguy.com (http://www.ibookguy.com/) This guy knows a lot about these computers.

Anyway, here are the specs:
iBook Clamshell Graphite Special Edition 466Mhz
320MB Ram
10GB Original Hard drive (Not brave enough to open it up that far :P )
AirPort Card (Yay!)
No Battery
DVD Player (Special Edition iBooks have those.)

It's in pretty bad condition. There are cracks near the Apple logo under the display and near the F12 key. And the Apple logo on top of the lid is missing. (Some people think it's supposed to be like that.) I bought this particular machine because it was cheap and.. come on, it was the special edition I just had to buy it! :P

I also made a simple Boot-Up and shutdown video. (Starting of web-browser included :P)

Anyway, thanks for reading this post.

I once played with a lady's clamshell. It was a tangerine. :D

That was around the time I got my PowerBook G3 Pismo. I felt I needed the extra power for Final Cut Pro. It's a shame I didn't make more movies, but that was before YouTube. No audience, no motivation. But I digress. I really want a blueberry for my collection.

I just seen a blueberry out in public, crazy. And he had a working 1st gen iPod shuffle, keeping it classy. It's been awhile since I've seen either of those in public.

Nice. I always enjoy seeing older hardware in use.

Hello,
i'd like to introduce my 466 SE :) Bought it for equivalent of $50. It had broken hinges and no backlight. I fixed damages and upgraded it a little (512 RAM and 32GB SSD). With 10.4.11 it's now pretty fast (as for Clamshell ofc). Boot time is now 41 s.
I made a little video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPnIk0JMAXk) of this 466 boot time compared to my PB 17".
Now i'm fishing for LG LCD cable to make XGA mod ;)

I have a Clamshell Graphite 466 SE running 10.3 and I love it. I use it at the library all the time because of the great battery life. I haven't really felt the need of upgrading to 10.4 yet but I may at some point for software compatibility reason. The only thing I wish ran on 10.3 is Coconutbattery :-)

I used to have a tangerine clamshell iBook G3.. then then the cd drive broke on it... needless to say I tossed the whole computer out as I needed storage space.... I wish I didn't. It was beautiful.

I have a 466mhz Graphite clamshell with the full 576mb ram and Airport. Cost me $105 AUD. Excellent bootup speed, I timed it last night; 45 seconds from push of power button to completely usable in OS X

This week I am getting a new high cap battery and in a couple of weeks a 16gb solid state drive for it.

I just got my Graphite 466mhz (running 10.4.11) in the other day. I know it's "outdated" but I'm going to find something productive for this old computer. Here's what I've done so far:

1) Disabled "shadows" with the application 'ShadowKiller'
2) Disabled Spotlight and the Dashboard with "Disable Tiger Features"
3) Changed my color scheme to "thousands of colors." (it's not even noticable on most tasks)
4) Removed extra languages/unneeded architecture with "Monolingual"
5) Installed "Camino" (and turned on the "flash blocker" built in the browser)
6) Changed the minimize effect to "Scaled Effect" instead of "Genie Effect"
7) Installed "ShapeShifter" to get the Leopard menu-bar/icon scheme.
8) Installed MS Office X (the first version for OSX so it runs well on a G3)
9) Installed apps: Transmission (v1.54), Adium (v1.3.10), and VLC (v0.8.6i)
10) Installed a brand new battery.

It runs a little slow at times, but for a 10 year old laptop, it's still fully usable for everyday internet browsing. I'd like to see anyone try and do what this iBook can do on a Pentium III laptop :D.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I use the "zoom out" feature on Camino so I can see a full web-page without scrolling around.
