Is it possible to add in a 2nd 3rd party optical drive into the 2nd optical bay on the 2009 pro? I have an NEC ATAPI from my old Windows rig that I'd like to put in if possible. I realize I'd probably have to do a conversion cable for the power though...
Will that work, or is there something special about the "superdrive" units?

Nothing special!
By converter you mean ATA to SATA/SATA to ATA yes?
I wouldn't know really but I see no reason for it not to work.
They are very cheap now-a-days so even if it doesn't work a new, faster, quieter drive is only a few $/£ away!

sorry to hijack, just trying to save on another thread here....
can i buy an actual apple superdrive to add into my 2009 mac pro?
any benefit really of having 2? some searching seems to hint that 2 may slow both drives down as they share the same channel??

I you want to waste money your AASP will sell you original Apple branded drives.
Both optical drives on a 2009 Mac Pro are on separate SATA cables. There will be no speed disadvantage from having two drives.
