HD and SD Version

I recently downloaded an HD movie from Apple and it comes with an SD version. Does anyone know how iTunes shows it only once and then selects the correct file for a device when you transfer.

I'd like to rip my movies in Apple TV format and iPhone format and only see one version in iTunes ..

You can't rip an HD version of a DVD. The max resolution is 720 x something, 720 being the largest number.

He's not talking about ripping an HD version from an SD source, but rather having a high-quality version for the ATV and a lower-res version for the iPod at the same time, the way that HD TV shows from the iTMS give you two versions but only one entry in your library.

I know you can do it because I've seen a few threads around here on how to do this. Do some searching of the forums.

Just rip both of your versions, doesn't matter whether they are actually HD or not. iTunes is just checking that one is marked with the HD flag, both are tagged as movies, or tv shows, and they have matching CNID tags. The easiest way to accomplish all of this is to use the program Subler (http://code.google.com/p/subler/). You can either lookup the same CNID Apple is using in the itunes store by looking at the url in the store, or you can just make up a random number. Just make sure its the same for both files. After you've tagged them correctly drop both files into itunes, and you should be set.

I just convert the DVD using HandBrake's Apple Universal preset. It creates a single file that is the original DVD resolution and plays on both my AppleTV and iPhone.

This is certainly the easiest way, but it creates large files that take up a lot of space on an iPhone/iPod.

I'm doing the same thing. After months of tinkering with settings, and thinking about storage for two different versions of the same movie/tv episode, let alone management in iTunes, I decided this was the easiest way. Yeah, they will eat up more space on an iPod. For me, I have a 160GB classic; it's certainly not big enough to hold all my movies, but it can hold my favorites and I can swap others on an off as I please.
