Possible to make optical sound work on the apple dock?

I have an iPod touch and the apple dock (the one that comes with a remote) and I tried putting in my optical sound cable, but it didn't work. Is it possible to somehow make it work?
 
Damn. Can't you get some sort of adapter? Doesn't matter if the quality gets a little worse
