Microsoft has officially dropped the façade on Windows 7 in 2010 and conceded that its essentially completed operating system will ship this year.

Windows 7 will be released to manufacturing in about three months, pending feedback on the current release candidate, senior vice president of the Windows and Windows Live engineering group Steven Sinofsky said Monday.The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/11/windows_7_2009/).

I believe it, despite this coming from The Register, which is like the worst news source on planet. But thank you for the heads up.


EDIT: Engadget says around the holiday season (http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/11/microsoft-windows-7-on-track-for-the-holiday-season/), and their source is straight from Microsoft themselves (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/May09/05-11TechEd09PR.mspx?rss_fdn=Press%20Releases). I guess august = holiday season?

August sounds a little soon, but would expect it by the end of the year, as it is already more solid than Vista.

I hope it's soon. It's already a better experience for me than Leopard.

i run leopard, xp and windows 7 and although i am currently on 7 RC1 i was making the joke not as a Mac user but as someone that uses them all and had to assume that you were joking. not sure how you can honestly say that 7 in its RC1 state is a better experience than a fully developed OS?

i can completely agree that Windows 7 (VistaII) is a much better environment than Vista is but aesthetics aside XP is still far superior as a stable, user friendly, less bloated OS than 7 is currently.

take away having to deal with virus's (seriously not just being a mac guy) and the other needed maintenance/prevention software needed for windows and i am a happy XP user as much as i am a happy mac user.

my personal choice over time has become OS X for too many reasons to list but i am in no way a windows hater. i guess i could add my windows machines to my sig but this is a mac site so i didnt.

also wanted to mention that until about 3 years ago nobody poked more fun at mac users than i did until i actually used one.

Question: is there any way to get the Windows XP version of MS Paint to run natively in W7? That;s all that's keeping me from switching.

Just tried it.

From Win XP Pro SP3 to Win 7 Ultimate RC.

You'll find it in C:\Windows\System32 on XP.

What's wrong with Win 7's Paint anyway? :confused:

Based on past Windows releases, Windows 7 has to RTM (Release to Manufacturing) by late August or early September to get pre-loaded on new PCs by the holiday season. I would expect major PC manufacturers to have preloaded Windows 7 machines in retail outlets by mid-November at the latest. In fact, Acer has already said they expect to ship their first preloaded Windows 7 machine in late October.

Will it be available at retail outlets in August? No. Microsoft will wait until the first wave of preloaded Windows 7 PCs are on the market (mid to late October) before releasing the retail (boxed) copies. However, if you're a member of MSDN or TechNet you'll get a copy of the RTM release.

You should also keep in mind, per Microsoft's policy, any PC sold after July 1 with Windows Vista will be automatically eligible for a "free" Windows 7 upgrade license. Just like last time, these "coupon programs" will be handled by individual PC manufacturers.

RTM = Microsoft's term for "Gold master" in the Mac world.

True this. In any case though, the RC doesn't expire till next year and is already very stable. I'll happily wait for the actual release, whether that be September or December. As far as the July 1st Vista free upgrade license, where did you hear about that? I assumed it would eventually happen.

It was leaked by an OEM partner a few months ago.
