I just got a Nikon D5000 and of course Aperture doesn't support its RAW file format yet. What alternatives do I have? I don't really want to buy any new software if I don't have too. I also have Photoshop CS3 but I don't know how to import straight into there if it's even possible.

Adobe Camera Raw may work for you. It ships with Photoshop.

Also there is a free RAW converter "dcraw" and there are many, many free and not-free programs that interally make use of dcraw.

Nikon makes software that will work

and there is "bibble"

As for workflow, there are two ways to go (1) Stay inside the Adobe suite (ACR, Bridge, PS) or (2) use one of the above to convert to JPG or TIFF then import that to iPhoto or Aperture.
