pulling out an old MD player to listen to some MDs got my thoughts going... where do you guys think we are headed in terms of portable music?

casette tapes introduced us the portability and ability to make duplicates.

CD introduced us the random access and quality improvements.

MD/CD-R introduced us the ability to make identical copies.

mp3 CD-R introduced us the ability to carry more music in smaller format, at quality acceptable to most.

iPod is right now the ultimate - combination of all of the above and the ability carry more music than most of us ever imagined...

where do we go from here? what's next? (obviously, i can't think of it - otherwise, i'd go sell my idea to sony/apple. :D )

Perhaps a satellite 'music-on-demand' service that lets you wirelessly stream your choice of songs to an iPod-like receiver. Imagine being able to listen to any of iTMS 700,000+ tracks anywhere, anytime. This is the only way I can see a subscription service actually working, because it would free you up from having to listen at your computer.

We already have subscription music services, iPods, and satellite radio... can this be far behind?
