This is a replacement for the previous discussion thread. We're studying the problem we had with that thread, but in the meantime you can continue to discuss the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update here.
Discussion of the the technical problem should be in this forum feedback thread, not this thread.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

My golly gosh... here's what I had to do after Apple released all these updates:
Apply Mac OS X 10.5.7 update to Installation #1
Reboot (twice)
Apply Safari update to Installation #1
Reboot again
Switch to Installation #2, Reboot
Apply 10.5.7 Update to Install #2
Reboot (twice)
Apply Safari Update to Installation #2
Reboot
Burn 10.5.7, Safari updates to DVD, to apply to other computer
Repeat said process for that computer, too
Switch to other computer's Tiger partition, reboot
Apply Security Update 2009-002, reboot
Apply Safari Update, reboot
Yeesh.

Hmm...
Four hours to download? I think I'll try tomorrow.
Never takes that long with Windows Update but then I suppose they have more practice.

Apple really should have split this up into 10.5.7 and 10.5.8 given the number of fixes, the length of time and all the trouble people are having downloading and installing.
I have received this message a few times and had the download quit. Anyone else?
This has been happening a lot. Just restart the download.

Can't get it, it errors out every time, farthest I have made it is 50MB of 449MB. Thanks apple for having all that money in the bank but not enough servers and bandwidth to distribute your updates. It's the iPhone OS update debacle all over again.
Here at apple we think different, and never learn from our past mistakes.

Just chiming in with an AOK here. Early MacBook Pro, comboupdater. Double restarted, as usual (I'm guessing it loads something up and installs during restart). Installed Safari Public Beta update with no issue (from Software update).
Things to note:
-Drop down menu for power management restored.
-Mac MSN messenger bug still present (where it loses focus in the chat window).
-X11 2.3.3 installs fine
-Repair permissions no longer brings up a string of iPhoto issues (although Front Row remains).
-I restored my AppleUSBMultitouch.kext back to the default 10.5.6 prior to installing 10.5.7. IT looks like it has an incremental update (has the number changed). I wonder of the four finger gesture hack still works?

I'll count myself lucky in having a flawless install. Downloaded in about 15 minutes, cleanly rebooted, everything came up. Spotlight had to rebuild its index after everything came up and that took a while. Safari 4 Beta update, again clean reboot.
First Time Machine backup just finished and that took a while. Everything just worked out for me this time.

Too bad about the errors people are having. We have a speedy vlan here and I upgraded two PPCs in just a few mins total. :/
Nothing's different, although I guess Safari 4 beta 2 requires 10.5.7 and beta 2 does seem "snappier", though that could be mental.

I didn't restore mine to the default version before updating. When I updated it automatically removed the 4-finger gestures.
This page (http://www.super-poultry.com/2008/12/4-finger-multi-touch-for-older-mbps/) has instructions on how to do the 4-finger hack, although it may not work on 10.5.7. I'm going to wait for someone else to try it first.

This is more than likely the cause for the bandwidth problems.
I gave it 3 attempts and you 6, and I can imagine that this is quite common, which equates to a modest increase in bandwidth wasting.
As soon as they identify the package issue, and people are getting the update right on the first download, I am sure all will return to normal.
So ya'll can cancel or at least postpone the "apple, server, bandwidth, hate" posts. ;-)

Things seem better. I'm seeing the beachball more often, but oddly enough, things seem to load faster. It's a bit weird, but whatever.
If you find yourself in a loop after restarting (blue screen, the little loading circle on the bottom keeps appearing and re-appearing), turn your Mac off and turn it back on again. The normal installation should continue. It will restart several times and it should eventually load up Leopard with it updated to 10.5.7.
If you have problems downloading the update, download the update from apple's website. The servers via software update are being hammered right now.
Unfortunately, the safari 4.0 update seems to download really slow and it looks like it's only available via software update.

Installed and got stuck on a blue screen. Every few seconds a loading wheel would pop up but that would repeat over and over and it wouldn't go anywhere. I powered off my 17" MBP unibody and tried again. Same thing. The third time I got the Leopard background with a loading wheel that spun a few times, then the computer restarted itself.
Finally, I am able to log in. Hopefully this is stable.

Some of you might want to wait on this.. Theres a lot of different problems with it. Either downloading it in the first place, or with installing it, or trying to apply other updates after installing it.
Both my Macs locked up part way through the initial reboot and had to be force shut down. And even then, neither of them started up cleanly afterwards.
And thats just the short of it..

Just use time machine after you update to restore the 10.5.6 kext
You go ahead and tell me how that works out. The kext file has a new versions number in 10.5.7.
The safer route would be to edit it yourself. But you need to do a bit of permissions changing, as well as know to restore the Extensions.mkext file, which is a sort of cache for the kernel extensions, I believe.

I give up. I have got that message at least 10+ times. I have rebooted multiple times. No luck. Wonder what is going on? It has to be more than overloading the Apple server. Software Update wants to download 449 mb to my iMac. If I go direct to the Apple website the update is 442 mb. makes me wonder what I am missing if I go direct to DL it from Apple. I think I will pass and let some time go by like maybe a year. Apple Hello anybody home?
In any case I don't need 10.5.7 that bad for all the hassle.

Does 10.5.7 upgrade iTunes to the latest version?
I use a 2nd-gen iPod Shuffle, so I'm to iTunes v8.0.2. The latest versions of iTunes have lousy behaviour with these Shuffles (discussed elsewhere in this forum and on Apple Discussions).
Any other 2nd-gen Shuffle users upgraded to 10.5.7 and see that the 'correct' behaviour has been restored?

Not much change or difference to me. Maybe I'll see it later on when I use the applications.
The download was a bit long. It first failed but I tried re-downloading it again and it was quick.
I was hoping there was some updates on bugs in MS Office stuff like how docs randomly moves to another space.

Was kinda disappointed though that I had to reboot for the safari update. What is this, windows?
I'm guessing the restart is required because Safari also installs the WebKit framework, which is a system framework and is used by all applications that link to it, so Apple probably wanted to avoid bugs where certain apps would have different versions of the framework loaded. Restarting would make sure every app loads the new version. :)

My install went without a hitch, but I've hit hiccups during updates before. These are the situations where a verbose mode during the update process could help.
For those of you having trouble through Software Update, the general solution is almost always to download the Combo Update directly from Apple, then apply it without using Software Update. I had the same security/save issues in various other incremental updates as well and this is the first thing to do if Software Update is not working for you.
In fact, some would say that it's technically cleaner.

Apple really should have split this up into 10.5.7 and 10.5.8 given the number of fixes, the length of time and all the trouble people are having downloading and installing. ...
AGREED.
Three out of three machines went into endless reboot cycles.
All three clean and not a single customization or hack. Wait this one out.

It's nothing to do with resolution switching. bb714 is talking about switching the graphics card - hence the additional options in the battery menu.

I also got stuck on the blue screen... but after forcing a power down and restarting, I am back to normal after a few restarts by the computer and seeing default Leopard wallpaper. the install seems to just have gotten stuck, but it's all good now.

So I just downloaded the update (not combo, regular) and installed it. When my Late 06 MacBook went to reboot, it would glitch out, (pic included), go back to verbose logout, blue screen, then glitch, and back again. Did this 10 times before I held the power button and it rebooted again, then again, then got right up to where the login window should of been, where it had the verbose text but with the blue screen transparently over the text. Rebooted again, everything seems to be working now.

Yes
That was a response to a prior question about why it might be taking so long to boot. If he rebooted while Spotlight were building the index, would take a while before everything came up to speed on the next boot.
Anyway, once it rebuilds, try rebooting again. Shouldn't be an issue.

I haven't measured the boot time yet but after update my MBP4,1 startup is definitely sluggish. I did a combo update just to be sure.
But since I never reboot this machine, I am not that concerned. I am a bit reluctant to put 10.5.7 on my work MBP2,2 as it gets rebooted often and it has been working like a champ for some time now.

OK, so I ended up manually downloading the update from Apple's site. The update went normally on my white iMac, but on my Macbook and Mac Mini went into this endless graphical glitch before the restart stage. I had to hold down the power button to do a hard shut down on each, but after powering back on, everything went normally as far as I could tell.
I wonder if the graphical glitch has to do with the onboard Intel chips I have on the Mac Mini and Macbook compared to the ATI onboard graphics of my iMac.

On the MBP4,1 - update went well but it made the thing very sluggish to boot. After boot everything is normal but boot is annoyingly slow.
On the MBP2,2 - update went well, machine boots as fast as it used to and everything is very snappy like before.

System update does not yet shows the Safari update.

System feels more responsive and also applications like email, and safari start faster than before 10.5.7. I reboot a few times a month this is the fastest I seen the system after a reboot EVER. Maybe it is me, but does feels much better than with 10.5.6. The word that comes to mind is SILKY.

I had to power down and it took about 3 reboots before it got to the log in. The new power options are in the menu bar and everything but I still have the old bulb under the System Pref panels. I also installed the new Safari 4 Beta, and that has been fine so far. But yeah, how do I get the new bulb under prefs?

Installed the 400mb pack first without any problem. However, I could not get the power setting menu under the menu bar. So I downloaded and installed to the 700mb combo pack and installed again, but no luck too. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Btw, I'm reading everyone has to reboot TWICE during the update but I only had to reboot ONCE, for both the 400mb and 700mb update. What gives?
I had this exact same problem. I tried installing the 400mb pack through software update and I was missing the power settings menu. I then tried installing the 700mb pack from the apple site and it still didn't fix it. I'm currently in the process of reinstalling OSX.. and then I'll be applying the 700mb pack. I'll let you know if that works out.

Alright this is very odd and very, very annoying...
Suddenly my trusty MacMini has become absolutely unaware that it's projecting the signal to my Samsung R37 TV. The resolution is all out of whack!
I can hardly read the text I am typing now, I can't see Samsung in the monitors selection anymore and it doesn't detect it either.
It shows that it's able to project 1920 x 1080 which I wasn't even aware it could, it's the MacMini Core Duo not Core 2 Duo, so I'm surprised.
Either way the resolution is horrible even in 1920, it's too rough and the text is too rough and soft on the edges.
Furthermore, I can't zap the PRAM to see if it would help cause when I do that, the keyboard or rather the Mini Doesn't respond to my key combinations.
What the heck went wrong? Anyone out there with the same issues? or some ideas of how I can make it work with my LED TV again?

Apparently 10.5.7 didn't fix the permission data related to iLife apps in the reference .bom, and Disk Utility still gives a bunch of permission discrepancies when repairing permissions. I know this isn't a problem per se because it's just .bom fooled Disk Utility into believing there should be real files when actually there are symbolic links. But I was expecting 10.5.7 to fix it.

OK after my problems using software update I downloaded the 443 mb file from the apple site, installed...had to do a hard shutdown, it rebooted itself a couple of times, then booted up fine in 10.5.7. I did a permission repair using disk utility...it didn't need to repair anything...downloaded the safari beta b and here I am. Everything doe seem to be running a bit snappier. I find that is usually the case with an update like this.

OK. Mac Pro. 2.0 GHZ 6MB Memory.
I could not install 10.5.7 via Software Update. Tried it twice. All sorts of errors and it would not download. Went for the combo package. Downloaded OK. Took a long time tho on a fast DSL connection. Installed and did a restart. Spinning wheel spinning, stopped spinning, spinning, stopped, etc. Hit the power button on my MacPro to shut it down. OK. Did restart. Start up ok, Leopard galaxy screen came up -- which I do not use. Wait, wait, wait. Mac auto restarted twice. finally got my desktop and all seems well so far. We'll see. I've NEVER had a problem like this before on my G4 or my MacPro.
Hope all is well. But something is or was fishy with this update.

If you post here, it means (presumably) that you read this forum regularly. If so, you would have read infinitum that, whenever there's a major OSX update, the safest thing for your system is to download the Combo .dmg file -- the one that contains all the updates from 10.5.1 through to the latest -- and re-installs everything nicely.
Ever since about 10.5.2, I've been doing that without trouble. Surely by now this is widespread knowledge, at least for people who regularly read this forum. And if you're posting here, chances are you should be regular readers.

I got around this by downloading the file from the 1st post of the thread. The only issue though, is I got stuck on a blue screen, had to power down hard style, then it self-rebooted 2-3 times after I powered up; now all is well.
After having the same issue, I did Disk Utilities and Tech Tool Pro 4, just prior to download.
Everything was fine (it's a new machine).
Then I took it from the original post, then got the 'Blue Screen!' after 10 years of owning a Mac, I've never had that!
It just went on for an hour, I thought maybe I'd leave it, in hope it was just taking time to re-boot itself.
In the end I switched it off and did a reset Pram on it!
Then it just continued to restart itself maybe 5 times!
I've now turned it off completely, unplugged it from the wall and taken all usb/firewire/speaker connections out, and I'm off to bed...
eFF it!
I'll work it out 2moro...

while I agree that the combo is the superior download, the regular update through software update is sufficient for most users. the combo update is most useful if you have problems... but if your current install isn't giving you problems, there really isn't any reason why software update won't give you a problem-free update.

I have received this message a few times and had the download quit. Anyone else? http://www.healingmagic.org/sigmessage.jpg
I was seeing Download Time Remaining as high as 24 hours, as low as 2 hours - eventually settling somewhere around 5 hours.
Then about 20 minutes into the download, I received the above message.
So I selected OK, Quit Software Update, Restarted my MacBook (2.16 GHz C2D, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM) and relaunched Software Update.
This time, it took ~5 minutes to download & install 10.5.7.
Not sure what the hang up was, but Restarting seemed to fix. For me.

I installed it off of apple's site (because it wouldn't let me through Software Update), installed, then restarted. When it was shutting down the screen alternated between a few shades of blue and a white screen every like 10 seconds for about an hour. I had no other choice but to pull the plug. That's just it though. There have been a LOT of people who are telling every one of these guys who are having the strange installs to A) Use the Combo update and/or B) Repair permissions. This has been repeated again and again in this thread as well as the one that died.
I actually want to talk about some of the aspects of the update but it keeps getting flooded out by posters who are posting nothing of value other than than screenshots of the permission error. Consider yourself lucky if this is the first time that this has ever happened to you and take either or both of the solutions that are being proffered.
Back to the update, yeah, 1080p on my 2.5Ghz Penryn 4GB RAM 8600GT 512MB is noticeably smoother than it was before. ITunes store has always been absurdly slow and not noticing any differences. Safari 4 Beta, feels the same as the previous Safari 4 Beta.

I've never had a problem with any Vista updates. I think one has an advantage running it under boot camp as one knows there aren't going to be any driver issues - no weird finger-print scanner that never gets driver updates to allow sp1 to even show up, nothing like those sorts of stories that went around.
No, Vista updates have always just worked - Vista overall has in fact.
Mind you, I've never had a problem with an OS X update either. I get each one the day it comes out, except I was lucky enough to be away and offline when the nasty 10.2.7 update came out and messed things up for a lot of people.
Nice to see specific points about improving dashboard widgets, but I don't imagine they've fixed the iTunes widget crash - I'll install it when I get home and find out, and either I'll get to submit feedback on it for the 20th time, or it will be fixed ... win win imo.

I was getting that too. I did basically the same, forced it to turn off about about 10 minutes of it cycling through blue screens, and turned it back on, then it finished the install. Just to be safe I reapplied the update and it worked perfectly that time.

I'm disappointed. I just reinstalled OSX from scratch and then applied the combo update thinking it would fix the power settings menu problem... but it didn't. Any other suggestions guys? It seems like there's been two cases of the power settings not appearing in the menu bar so far.

I have received this message a few times and had the download quit. Anyone else? http://www.healingmagic.org/sigmessage.jpg
Happened for me. Went to support download page, and downloaded no problem. Install went well.

Nope. Combo is up: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1057update.html
Must be Software Update server problems.

some of us have 1.5mbp/s
right now i'm 15.5mb/449 and with "About 3 hours" left.
I have 15.5 mbps and it took 15 min... you might want to check with your isp and make sure everything working right.

I'm very disappointed with Apple. Come on. How hard does it take to make sure the update works for people? I've never had any problems with any update until now.
Blue screen froze for about 30 min so I had to force shutdown, then it rebooted 3 times and now I finally see my desktop.
Seriously...

EXACTLY the same thing happened for me on my 17" MBP running 10.5.6 fresh install to my new SSD.

Its the servers. I had a 14 hour estimate at one point. Just restarted it and it was done in 20 minutes.

My Mac Pro is stuck on "Running Installer Script" (about 10 minutes). What should I do? Is it safe to turn the computer off when an update is being installed?

Does anybody else not have the option to select graphics cards from the menu bar after installing 10.5.7?

If you installed it and did an Archive and Install make sure the first thing you do after it boots up for the first time is to permanently delete the old archived system folder. I noticed that the os updater is dumb and it actually updated the archived system folder and NOT the freshly installed OS. You can check this by comparing the version numbers for iCal.app or System Preferences.app in both the archived folder and your running install. You'll notice that the archived system folder actually gets updated..
Hmm, i should really open a bug report with Apple about this but i just don't have time to mess around with my system in order to offer them proof..

Downloaded in 20 seconds, installed and double restarted (once for Safari) and everything was done in about 5 minutes.
Everything seems to be working so far, and the new safari beta seems a lot faster and smoother.

Thanks,
Well here's the latest on the issue which is affecting quite a lot around the web in different Mac Forums.

But to be honest even this switchResX is driving me nuts... it's not even close to looking like it used to... the text is hard to read and the entire thing is way too dark now.
Apple has had issues like this before, but NOT THIS BAD!
And yeah I've tried to reboot without the DVI to HDMI plug in. I tried to zap the PRam but it's not responding to my Keyboard... I don't get that by the way, for a while now the Mac Mini when restarting doesn't reply to my keyboard.
Man, I wonder what happened? Apple seems to have really dropped the ball this time. Especially after spending so much stinkin time on this update!!
