That Courney Love song isn't even worth 0.0¢. Just as I wouldn't eat a free dinner of horse testicles, I won't be downloading free songs by no-talent junkies.

The lists in post #1 and post #2, which are updated each Tuesday, give the names and links for the free iTunes Music Store music that Apple has given away this year.
When I started this thread, I issued the challenge to others to "collect them all". I created the free tunes list in post #1 to help people find the new songs each week.
Then Apple started giving away Discovery Downloads (free tunes that are not identified on the main iTMS page) and the original list turned into two lists. But because of the long iTMS URLs and the limit on the size of a single post, eventually post #1 could not hold both lists. Luckily, SilentPanda came to our rescue and is now hosting the Discovery Download list in post #2. Thanks, SilentPanda!
Starting in November 2004, Apple also made monthly mixtapes freely available, announcing "the first completely legal, free mixtape for download, along with the tracks that inspired it." The mixtape is listed in the same format as an album, with the original songs or the whole "album" available for purchase. Only the mixtape, which can be quite long, is free. Mixtapes are listed in post #2.
Here is the original text of the first post:
It will be fun to get the free iTMS tune each week. There were originally 42 to be given away this year, from April 28 thru December 28 (not counting Pepsi tunes) but extras on May 6 and Sept. 8 upped the count to 44, and Discovery Downloads added dozens more.
Some people have already missed one because they were late to hear the news, some didn't upgrade to iTunes 4.5 in time for the first day, and some simply missed one of the days so far. In the coming weeks and months, you might forget when it's Tuesday, you might be out of town, your computer might not be working, your ISP might be down, or you might be unable to type from injuries suffered in a freak meteor shower. Who knows what could go wrong? You might even decide it's not worth bothering to download a tune you aren't interested in. It may be free, but why click if you won't listen to it anyway?
Whatever the reasons, some people will start with the goal of getting them all, and by attrition people will drop out over time. Who's going to try? I'll give it a shot. Maybe I'll find some new music I like along the way!

Its on my Lookout calendar (MS Outlook for those who think it’s a secure piece of software.) so I'll be notified. I wonder if I can write something to run iTunes and take me to the music store when the alarm goes off. Hmm Ahh computers.

Who is going to take the challenge and try to get every free iTune this year?
This week I've already installed iTunes and PuTTY on two PCs, one at a friend's house and one at a relative's, solely for the purpose of grabbing the promo songs and relaying them to the machine at home. Why am I admitting this?

Absolutely, I don't want Lavigne or Love anywhere near my hard drive. (Error computer forever corrupted!!!) :D

I added iTMS URLs to the chart above, so you can click on a song title to access it within its album (if any).
Song #7 is sure different than those that preceded it. Dorothy, I don't think we're in rock/pop/alternative Kansas anymore!

What I had in post #2 (not that it's important...):
I'm without a doubt going to download every free tune I can. I'll be gone most of June but hopefully I can get somebody else to click for me... :) It's FREE. Why not? Even if I don't like the tune I might just find some I do like, and the ones I don't I can either delete or save as "joke" music for something.
(Now for this post)
I've done it! :)

When Apple comes out with their next statement of "We sold xxx million songs", I wonder if they will include the free songs in that mix, or if they will just include the songs that were actually paid for?

The daily freebies conclude today. From now on, it's one free tune every Tuesday. My chart above goes through the end of the year, but Apple has said nothing about when the program will end, so it could be before the end of the year or the deal could continue into 2005.

Alternative - Simon Stinger - French Connection (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7254603&selectedItemId=7254583)

Also Doctor Q you should probably update your list to include all the discovery downloads.I'd love to. If you scroll down in the first post, you'll see that I already have the first one I heard about. Post any others you know and I'll add them too.
I don't know how common these discovery downloads are, so I tried some random searches in the store for common words, and then paged through the results. By sorting on the Price column, you don't have to scroll (freebies will be at the top along with no-price tunes). In this way, I quickly looked through 30,000 songs, but I didn't find any discovery downloads. Looks like you have to be extremely lucky or else get them by word of mouth, like this thread.

Discovery downloads are actually pretty easy to find. There have only been 3 so far (including today).
To find them just go into every section. Usually I just start at Alternative, then move to Blues, then Classical, etc. Eventually you'll find in the middle top "billboard" a discovery download. This weeks download is in the Folk section.
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5407391&selectedItemId=5407371
If you go to the Folk section you'll see what I mean. For the past 3 times the discovery download has been in the middle top billboard. Enjoy!
The 2nd discovery download was in the classical section:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5473141&selectedItemId=5473139
Although of course it's not free today.
The first one is on the list that the good Doctor is painstakingly updating every week. Keep it up! There's the two other discovery downloads if you want to add them. You might edit the post to note that the discovery downloads are at the bottom of the list so people don't ask.

I tried to download the free Twentysomething track but the Music Store crashed with two different errors about the store not being accessible. When the Shopping Cart became accessible again, a $0.99 price tag had been added. :(
The Music Store is broken again:
"The iTunes Music Store is temporarily unavailable. Please check back later."
Have the free downloads overloaded the servers?
Doctor Q
May 18, 2004, 07:22 PM
I got the "unavailable" message 3 times this morning, so either the store was having trouble overall or accessing the specific free tunes was the problem, since I was accessing the Discovery Download tunes via URLs when I had trouble. Each time, I just tried again and got through. And I can't prove this, because I didn't save the data, but I'm almost certain that the URL I got out of the store for one tune changed to a different URL when I copied it to the clipboard again. One URL value was before the "unavailable" message and the other was after.

On a side note, I'm glad I discovered this thread b/c I knew nothing about the discovery downloads until just now. I'll have to make sure I start downloading those too.
edit: Does anyone think I should start a new thread somewhere else asking this question? I'm worried about how much exposure it will get in here. I'll wait awhile and see if anyone in here knows the answer first, I guess.

I do download the stuff I want. If you're implying to download the stuff I want via illegal channels that's not really a good option for me. How can I show the artists that I like their music if I don't give them money in return? I can't go to a lot of concerts and I'm not going to send them personally a check in the mail either. The iTunes Music Store was set up so that the working people could send their money (no matter how small a portion the artists get) to other working people (the artists) for the goods they provide. I'm not crazy about the latest pop album either but I'm also not crazy about some random band I've never heard of named "Nitro Dogs in a Bushel of Grapes" either. I'll listen to what I like and if the iTunes Music Store has it I have no problem buying it. I tend to buy things I like and don't buy things I don't like. Maybe the RIAA is taking too much money from the artists but that's what they've agreed to. Their passion for making music overrules their desire to make money otherwise they'd get out. I pay the artists so they can continue with their passion just as others support me (inadvertantly) so that I can pursue mine.

Has anybody looked at the source code for the iTunes e-mail that Apple sends to mailing list subscribers every Tuesday? I happened to peek at it today and discovered that it has an interesting "boundary" string.
Usually these strings look like random garbage. But in this case the line in the header looks like this:
Content-Type: multipart/alternative; charset="ISO-8859-1"; boundary="This_is_the_boundary_hip_ho"
I wonder if that's a truncated form of "hip hop"? Or a bit of "hip hip hooray!"?
In case you wanted to know the geeky details, boundary strings separate the sections of an e-mail message that has multiple body sections, including most non-plain-text e-mail you receive. The standard for this stuff (RFC 1521: Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1521.html)) specifies only that the boundary string should be no more than length 70, not end with a space, consist of these characters: space A-Z a-z 0-9 ' ( ) + _ , - . / : ? and be a string that another e-mail encoder is unlikely to choose (to avoid random collisions with nested/forwarded messages).
Looks like Apple was having a little fun here! :)

Has anybody looked at the source code for the iTunes e-mail that Apple sends to mailing list subscribers every Tuesday?
And I thought I was having a slow week.
Content-Type: multipart/alternative; charset="ISO-8859-1"; boundary="This_is_the_boundary_hip_ho"
Yep, seen stuff like this before in Apple mailings. Why oh why do people insist on generating such horribly long and ugly boundary strings? It serves no purpose.
[quote]The standard for this stuff (RFC 1521: Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1521.html))
Things haven't changed dramatically, but we're on 2046 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2046.txt) now (it's spread across 2045 thru 2049).
specifies only that the boundary string should be no more than length 70, not end with a space, consist of these characters: space A-Z a-z 0-9 ' ( ) + _ , - . / : ? and be a string that another e-mail encoder is unlikely to choose (to avoid random collisions with nested/forwarded messages).
...and that's the concept that results in big ugly useless boundaries. It's sufficient to make sure the boundary doesn't appear in the body parts. If each mailer performs this check, there's no need to worry about what other mailers might do, and the planet can be rescued from the plague of big ugly boundary strings!
Looks like Apple was having a little fun here! :)
I want a written apology from Apple, and five million trillion dollars in compensation for the trauma. Then I'm going to buy IBM and make someone answer for SGML.

Getting through the first week without missing a tune was the challenging part. If you mistakenly took a nap, went to a movie, or worked on your homework instead of going online to pick up your tune before the day changed, you'd miss your one and only chance. Now that the pace is only two per week (including the Discovery Downloads), it's more of a hobby than a challenge.

I wonder if the free iTunes will ever be in the "Audiobooks" or "Disney" categories? Audiobooks aren't really "tunes" and Disney songs are less plentiful and probably harder to license than other genres.
Today's freebies are "Run" by Snow Patrol (Alternative) and "Maria Moita" by Rosalia de Souza (World).
I added genres to the Weekly iTunes chart, which has the links for all free tunes so far.

At the exact times that new freebies are being added, the music store does some pretty odd things, such as:
1. Show you this week's new free tune on the home page, but take you to last week's free tune when you click on it.
2. Show the song as Free in some places and 99 cents in other views of the same song from the same album.
And just now, two more oddities:
3. The reverse of #1. It showed me last week's Discovery Download but clicking it took me to the new one.
4. I clicked on the free tune after searching by artist (to avoid problem #2), and I got "Could not add an item to your cart. An unknown error occurred (5555). There was an error in the Music Store. Please try again later." Then it apparently fixed itself.
Anyhow, this weeks tunes are now available. As always, see post #1 for details.

When I look up Jem, they are listed under electronic. Not sure how you found them under Rock. I just searched for the artist name and they are clearly under electronic.
I've also noticed that there are several albums in the vocal section where the genre is Pop or R&B/Soul instead of vocal. I think that might be an effect of the vocal category on iTMS including a lot of music from different genres that just happens to feature a "big voice" front man/woman.
Did anybody catch any anomolies on the previous weeks?

I'm pretty sure that today is Tuesday, but I still don't see any new free tunes as of mid-morning.
I have always found it amusing that trash collection in my area, according to a Los Angeles decree, is "Wednesday, except if Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday is New Years Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day". Gee, I wonder how often Thanksgiving Day (defined as the 4th Thursday in November) falls on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday? :p
I brought that up because perhaps it explains the lack of tunes today. Maybe tunes are issued on the second business day of the week, which this week is Wednesday for most U.S. businesses. Oh wait, didn't they promote free tunes on Tuesday?
OK, a new theory. Maybe the person at Apple in charge of inserting the weekly free tunes had a little too much fun over the three-day U.S. holiday weekend, and has now stumbled into work late, confused and thinking today is Monday.
If you don't like my theories, please suggest one of your own.

If you don't like my theories, please suggest one of your own.
I was thinking that maybe Apple delayed the new free downloads because they were going to announce a settlement with Apple Records that included the full Beatles catalog being available on iTMS. The free download would be one of the Beatles tunes, of course.
Or maybe it's something else :p

There are still two free tunes available from the store (including the one listed in the "iTunes free songs" iMix mentioned earlier). This may explain why there's still no new freebie.
Maybe they're getting so much traffic now they don't want to publicize a new tune, not to mention that some people may still not realize that downloading a free song will not win you an iPod.

I didn't miss any tunes cause... I didn't end up going. :( I've been in and out of the hospital and opted not to go. But the people that did go had a ton of fun. Maybe next year... :) But at least I'm getting to feeling better! Wheee!

That's funny, but it seems like a good place for Apple to easily make this available to investors. Now the question becomes "can you really say you have met the challange of downloading all the free itunes, without downloading this too?" While I was waiting for Apple to get its links right earlier today, only the artist name was known, not the tune. I put my guess: "Let Me Out" in the first post as a placeholder because that's the only song I knew by that artist. It seems I predicted correctly. I can't tell why they have so much trouble with the links each week. It can't be a simple cacheing problem, can it? Time to hire a new webmaster?
Today the free tune is by an artist who is also new to the store. I haven't noticed whether that has been common in the previous weeks. Have most of these artists already been in the store before their tune was given away?

The Discovery Download ("Homesick") works fine this week. Earlier in the day, though, it was in a confused state. iTMS showed the price as $0.99 but when I clicked ADD SONG it still saidThe item you've added to your shopping cart is free for a limited time so download it at your earliest convenience.
In my shopping cart, it showed as $0.99 and I was curious whether I'd be charged if I clicked to download the song. Maybe you can tell by whether it says GET SONG or BUY SONG, but I didn't try it. After all, 99 cents is too huge a risk! So I waited until it claimed to be free before downloading.
By the way, does anybody else think Homesick is really by Simon and Garfunkel and Kicking the Heart Out (last week's free download) is really by the Beatles? Maybe there are some recently discovered old works and there is a grand conspiracy to sneak them into the store under the names of newer artists. ;)
Doctor Q
Sep 7, 2004, 01:20 PM
The song "Homesick", last week's Discovery Download, could be found by picking the "Folk" genre on the store's home page. Yet the album the song is on, "Riot On an Empty Street", is shown as "Rock". To see how Apple classified a similar sound, I looked up "The Essential Simon & Garfunkel" to see which it was. It's "Pop" ... sigh.
Note also that Apple spelled "Street" wrong in the album title. In the iTMS, it came out "Riot On an Empty Steet" by mistake.

Sticky threads are mostly reserved for announcements that everyone needs to be aware of: site rules and forum rules. I guess the distinction is that the Photo Directory is now considered a feature of the site.

Apple continues to confuse us (or at least me). There was no Discovery Download yesterday, and today there is one, but you can't get to it. The song is "Something More" by Sugarland, from the album "Twice the Speed of Life", but clicking the link produces the message shown below.
It could be that this song will become available before next Tuesday, or be next week's Discovery Download instead of this week's, or be one of two Discovery Downloads next week. If Apple can't put the comma in the right position in a date ("October, 26 2004") then it's no surprise they get the Discovery Downloads mixed up now and then!
Update, Wednesday evening: The free tune is now available, but clicking on the album link still produces the message "The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store."

I'm sorry to hear that, SilentPanda. Maybe I was lucky to have missed one near the beginning, so I got it over with early. It's like getting the first scratch on your new car. :(

Yeah, the iMix I'd been using to find the Discovery Downloads seems to be missing the last couple. (It has the Single of the Week's, though.)

Don't think anyone else has done this yet so I'll give it a go. I haven't found any other free songs other than these - it looks like it is just a weekly song.
1. Tue 8/ 3: Tina Dico: Break of Day (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=19067832&selectedItemId=19067820) - Pop
2. ?
3. Tue 8/17: Agent Blue: Something Else (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=20576722&selectedItemId=20576727) - Rock
4. Tue 8/24: The Radio Dept.: I Don't Need Love, I've Got My Band (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=20838235&selectedItemId=20838229) - Alternative
5. ?
6. Tue 9/ 8: Sirens: Baby (Off the Wall) (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=19067771&selectedItemId=19067749) - Hip Hop/Rap

12. Tue 10/19: Son of Dave: Life Is So Easy Now (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=26355056&selectedItemId=26355047) - Blues

I've missed two of them unfortunately so the list isn't complete - to get the list all I did was go through my purchased music in reverse order working out which ones weren't the US & Discovery downloads, and before you say, I haven't bought any recently :) Let me know if you know the missing tracks, or if there are any mistakes.
Here you go...
2. Tue 8/ 10: Breanna: You Don't Have to Be Strong (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7065056&selectedItemId=7065043) - Pop

Personally, I liked The Donnas and Hot Chip. Agent Blue were good too.

Hey Knox, I added a link to your post in the first post of the thread. Thanks for doing this. :)

Yay! Now we have once a month "mix tapes" that are like... 25 minutes long.
Go for it Mr. Q!!!! http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=27643623&selectedItemId=27643617

For those who didn't spot it, SilentPanda is referring to a new set of monthly freebies from Apple. Here are screenshots of the graphic and playlist notes from the first one.
Notice that the wording is ambiguous. They didn't make it clear that the mixtape is free but the "songs that inspired it" are not.

This week's (November 30) Free Single is finally up:
Sway by The Perishers from the album Sway - EP (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=31444617)
Still no sign of this week's Discovery Download, however.

And now it's time for our monthly Rap Mix too. Maybe tomorrow.

I wonder how long Apple's freebies will continue? I posed "The Challenge" as a game for 2004. Will we still be doing this in 2040?
I've been noticing that for at least some of these tracks, labels have been dishing them out as free MP3s elsewhere. I'm thinking that it will be around for a long time.

I did see the discovery download at some point but clicking on it brought up a blank slate of songs. This is semi-common so I didn't think to remember the name of it. I'm pretty sure it was in the Folk section but possibly Electronic... I usually go through each section alphabetically and know I got past Dance and didn't hit Holiday. But it's not anywhere to be found anymore...

It was in folk, even though the song was in the Rock section. I kept the url for a few days, but they never fixed it. It was Sleeping with the Lights on, by Teitur.

Hmmm, right now it's not listed as "free"...

Teitur's "Sleeping with the Lights On" was last week's (Nov. 23) discovery download. They didn't post one this week (Nov. 30) and still haven't. Maybe their better-late-than-never Canadian store distracted them.

It looks like the week of November 30th has ended without a Discovery Download. :(
On a happier note, the iTMS has been updated (and it's before 12:00AM PST) with some new free goodies:
Free Single of the Week: O'Ryan - Jus Anotha Shorty (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=33654882)
Discovery Download (from the Vocal genre): Beth Waters - Sweaters (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=32169999)
Street Official Mixtape, Vol. 2 (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=26095311) has also been made available for download. Note that my link does not currently work for whatever reason, but the mixtape can be found under the Hip Hop/Rap genre and also rotates as one of the ads the iTMS home page.
Enjoy! :)

Drats about this weeks Discovery Download, I bought Beth Waters Sweater back in march! In fact, I had that song in a playlist I published a long time ago, you can see it here:

I like most of the discovery downloads they have each week, and missed having one last week

Yeah, I noticed that her song was added to the iTMS on March 2, 2004, and thought is was a little strange. I thought the whole idea of the Discovery Download was to "discover" something new and different that was just coming to the market.

This is really weird!
Look at the names of the last free downloads in each category: the weekly iTunes, the Discovery Downloads, the Mixtapes, and the Audiobooks:
Sleeping with the Lights On
Sway
Sweaters
Street Mix 1
Street Mix 2
State of Fear
Stumblin
Synergy
The only one not starting with S since around Thanksgiving was "Jus Anotha Shorty".
Yes, I know 'S' is a common letter, but 8 out of the last 9!?

An extra freebie named "Lalala" by Julien Civange and Louis Haeri. See the first post in this thread for the link.
You can also find it starting from the iTMS home page: Click the "MUSIC2TITAN" picture when it rotates into position at the top. Then click "Free Track".

We may end the year on a nice round number: 80 free tunes. I hope this thread helped make it easy to get some free music and that you found some you liked.
How many members downloaded all 80 for free? 79? 78? 1? I thought I had missed one, but it turns out I didn't, so I got all 80. My favorites happened to be some of the Rock and Alternative tunes.
To get ready for next year, I started a similar thread for free iTunes 2005. Apple hasn't said how long they will continue giving away tunes, but we might as well have a place to keep track of them.
Here are the free iTunes for 2004 in order of release.

I have updated the first two posts of this thread to include 45 public service audiobooks from 2004 that were not previously included. They are all still free for anybody who is interested.
Edit: Updated again 3/1/05. Added additional public service audiobooks.
