Huh, I completely forgot about that game. Used to be a huge fan of it. Maybe I should get back into it. Hmmmmm.

Will it run smooth? Yes. But will better hardware increase how this game looks? No. It's a 2D sprite game. The top hardware from years ago could run this game flawlessly.

I still play, mainly to finish the storyline so I can be ready for SC2.

Starcraft is nowhere near dead, it's after all the national sport in South Korea. You will find thousands of players online.

If you have the PC version, go to www.battle.net and register your old CD key. They'll give you a new, longer key - and you can download the Mac client.

As for how well it runs, I've got a late 2006 Macbook with the old GMA950 (C2D 2.0Ghz), and it works fine.

Why would you even ask? Its still the (or one of the) most played RTS game ever. And its an e-sport in South Korea with over 400 pro gamers, thousands of amateurs (who play to get their pro licence) and even more casual and semi-competitive gamers.

If you want quality opponents and a good (best) ladder, go to sc.iccup.com and follow to instructions. You'll need an app called MacBNetGatewayEditor to add their server to the list of in-game servers. Please avoid the default Blizzard's servers like plague - low skill, mostly cheating and hacking, UMS, Fastest and BGH community heaven.

I follow every Korean league and download VODs regularly (http://www.youtube.com/jon747)

Still go to Thailand, Korea, or Japan once a year to play in a tournament. Its a very well balanced game that is a lot of fun and runs very well on just about every computer since 1995.

Starcraft is still one of my all time favorite games. The only thing I wish the game had is the ability to build walls. As a turtler when it comes to RTS games, I would appreciate being able to define barriers rather than depend on what the map gives you. I guess it helps with the balance though, for if we were able to build walls, the Zerg would absolutely no attack power. That said, I can't wait for Starcraft 2!

You know what's better than starcraft?

Cossacks: European Wars.

Huh? Pretty much 80% of time Terran builds a wall at his choke/ramp in TvP.

And its common to block of your nat choke with barracks/e-bay and supply depos if you turtle hard core.

In TvZ walls are not as widespread, used only when T goes mech.

In TvT walls are used only to block vulture run-by when you went for a fast expo.

I haven't played in a while, but it's been in the back of my mind because of the impending release of SC2.

I just got a new iMac, and I haven't installed it yet, but I'm sure I will soon.

This used to be one of our main sources of entertainment back when I was in high school. One of my friends had a few computers in his basement, and the rest of us would bring over laptops, and (especially during winter) we would play SC all night over the LAN, or hop on battle.net and play online games.

Good times!

I still play occasionally, this game will run on a toaster these days, and tons of people still play, I do occasionally.

I'll fire up a game of StarCraft every now and again. Playing Melee makes it s challenge even against the comp. I swear they made the comp smarter in updates over time. Hopefully my MacBook Pro will have sufficient specs to run SC2 when it finally comes out.

EVERYBODY who bought the boxed games has the PC version. They also have the mac version.

The CD's are hybrid, so anybody who owns the game has a CD key valid for both the mac and pc versions.

That said, what BTGeekboy said is correct. You can go to Blizzard's online store and register your game there, and then you can download the mac client (or PC client if you choose to), and you also won't need ur CD's anymore.

I'd LOVE to play StarCraft, but it's not practical for me to do so. I suffer from massive lag as a result of my router setup (only in Starcraft, not in any other game, and i've tried it on multiple computers in the house running both OS X and Windows). Nobody at Blizzard, cablevision, or Netgear is able to solve the problem, so if i DO want to play, I can't do it at home : \

But I would if I could.

My 66mhz mac can't run it... but it can run Warcraft 2 :D

The CD that you have for PC should work for mac too, you might need to download the OS X installer though, which you can get from here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23965

Actually I reinstalled SC yesterday. Unfortunately for me, I'm getting my ass handed to me most of the time on bnet, even though I've been playing SC quite some on bnet a couple of years ago and A LOT at lans. Tried iccup 2 years ago or smth and didn't really have much chance.

:)

The gameplay is constantly evolving and skill level of the playerbase increasing. ICCup is getting harder and harder with every season too.

A lot of pppl still play that on college campuses. I think Warcraft 3 too. But I think star craft is more. It's an old game. There isn't much computer power you need to play those games by today's standard. The only thing I would worry about is if you have widescreen it might look "squased" if it doesn't support that format.

I just started messing around with it again and while it looks a little nasty on a 24" screen (giant 8 bpp pixels), it's a testament to the greatness of this game that it's still really fun to play 10 years later. Really got me excited for SC2, I will definitely be buying that. Only thing that's a bummer is that it uses a ton of CPU cycles for a low-res 10-year-old game, and I can't get the CPU Throttling thing to work at all. Since I'm playing it most on a MacBook Pro (where it uses about 45%-60% of both CPU cores constantly), I get a screaming fan, red-hot laptop surfaces, and almost no battery life.

No, it runs with black bars on the sides on every Mac I tried.

hey, Starcraft fellows!
I just got vmware to run xp just for this game... I installed the vmware fusion, then my friend sent me a created image of an XP pro with a SC pre installed (which works for him), everything works perfect except the multiplayer!!!
I can see the created game through UDP, but cannot connect - says : unable to connect...
can any one give a hint on this problem? :)
thank you!

I have been trying to get into this game but I suck horribly at RTS games. I just can't seem to find the balance of researching and pumping out enough units to not get crushed. And I can't seem to figure out how to go to full screen. Playing on a tiny little square is frustrating as hell. I love the genre but fail miserably at anything but Halo Wars.

Hi guys,

i want to play - bought the game (again) and installed it last night on my 27" iMac.
BUT, when I try to go to battlenet in the multiplayer part of the game I get an error message saying "Unable to connect to Battle.net. If you are using a modem etc..."

I've spend hours googling for a solution and found something about port mapping/forwarding port 6112.

Then I made a static IP for my iMac on my Time Capsule wireless network and used that in the Airport utility where I put the 6112 port. But it still doesn't work.

Is it something silly like I need to reboot or am I going crazy over something else?:mad::eek::confused:

Hey this sounds good but when I try to add the windows version of the game account it doesn't work -- it asks for a 26 digit game key, my starcraft key is only 13 digits.

Update:

After I click "Add Game" the screen refreshes back to the same page. If I try to enter a key that is slightly different (changing the last digit etc) it will say "invalid key".

starcraft is, in my opinion, the greatest game ever. Its insane to think that people still play it, that it became the national sport of a country and that new strats are still coming out.

That aside, I've been playing it on my mac (2006 core duo macbook pro) from the third day I got said mac. Runs great, plays great (with a mouse attached of course.) WC3 runs very well too, specially DOTA. Oh yeah, dota.

My advice is to watch replays. It helps influence your playing, and learn to adapt, i see a lot of players who lose because they decide they are going to go one build and the other counters it and they keep on the same build and Don't adapt! Also variety is a must! You simply cannot mass one kind of unit, yes it happens a lot on Iccup, especially in the 2v2 ladder, but if you lose to that then you're doing something wrong. Pick a main race, focus of them, watch replays from pros, Zerg- JaeDong, Terran Boxer_Slayer, Protoss Bisu.

I totally agree. I've been watching SC2 replays every day for over a month. I played SC the other day and could totally tell my skills have greatly improved. My macro has increased substantially. Totally worth watching the replays.

Well I guess it just depends on the time frame, boxer has died down since his reign... :P
