I was watching a re-run of Friends the other night (the episode from last season where they all go to the tropics for Ross's dinosaur conference), and noticed that Ross has a Titanium Powerbook, but the glowing Apple logo is covered! Whats up wtih that?!?

Actually....Chandler downloads a virus that wipes out his hard drive, so I guess they wanted people to beleive it was running Windows :D

Dude, isn't this already widely known? TV/movie industry loves Apple (hence numerous appearances). The most humorous could be the MDD G4 (from the back at least) that appears in Austin Powers 3.

Legal Reasons--If products are used on TV, in some situations they have to block company logos, or it's considered advertising and they can get fined. Or something like that, anyway.

It's done quite a bit--The cheesiest I've ever seen was an ad where the Apple logos were all covered by Post-It notes.

They didn't cover the logo on the TiBook though, I think. One reason that Macs are used so often is that they're designed so well. The PowerBooks look several times better than any Wintel notebooks out there. Everyone knows what the iMac looks like, because it is so unique. Thank Jonathan Ives for that.

Saturday Night Live. I don't know what the skit is called but it has two stoner guys who are supposed to be in collage. Recognized the UI. I also see them in some Road Runner commercials.

Probably a paid placement, courtesy of our friends in Cupertino. What difference does it make to a prop master what computer the actor uses? It's a PROP, no actual computing involved.

Apple, imho, paid for the placement of the computer.

Producers care. Producers are "paid" to care.

No. You've got the wrong actor. It was Diane Keaton who had the PowerBook. Jack had a Wintel-based PC but I couldn't tell what type.

There is no way Apple is paying for their products to be placed in movies and TV with 75% of the time, the logo's are covered up. Apple has no reason to pay for it, people know they look great anyways.

Prop master probably doesn't care but I bet the set designer does.

If the logo is covered Apple certainly didn't pay for it to be there.

Payment for product placement is a two way street. Some times the show/film pays for the right to use a specific product in their project and some times a show/film gets paid to use a specific product (or the product is donated). Bascially whichever side bennefits the most from the others help is the one that pays.

In the case where logo's are hidden/not shown it was most likely a case of someone going, "Bob needs a sleek and stylish computer." So they toss a PB on his desk, but no one wants to pay Apple for using their product, or no one wants to give Apple free advertising, or Apple refused to let them "use" the Apple logo so, for what ever reason, the logo is never seen.

Hmmm....Em sports a Mini and all the pimps have iPods in the P.I.M.P. video...so if Obie Trice drops one, it's official and Em's whole crew likes iPods, right? :)

In Something's Gotta Give, Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton's characters chat with each other wirelessly in the same house on powerbooks (at least hers was) when they're too shy to approach each other at first. I thought that was really cute. Then again I study aging so I'm supposed to think that's really cute.
