View Full Version : MS-DOS Format Questions

Hello All,

I just hooked up an external hard drive to my 12" PB. I have it formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) right now, but I had a few questions about the MS-DOS format.

1. If I format the drive in MS-DOS, do I need to install Windows? I do have an XP disc, so I could do it if I had to.

2. If it's in MOS-DOS format, can I install and run both Windows and Mac applications, like Windows games and Mac Apps on the same drive? (This would be great!) And they'd both run with no problems?

3. Has anyone formatted their drive in MS-DOS? Have you had any probems?

Thanks in advance,

You can format the drive however you wish and OS X will be happy with it. if you were to hook it up to a Windows machine, however, you would have to (I think) format it as MS-DOS.

AFAIK, the format is for compatibility reasons -- nothing else.

I do know that it won't allow you to run Windows apps, nor would it require you to install Windows (it isn't even possible)

I can vouch from experince, I installed Mac0s X and then scrubbed it and tried installing Win2K, it won't install properly because it won't recongnize certain components of your mobo and other parts...besides OSx is so much more fun...

No i have seen people install OSX on an external firewire and boot from that drive in computer labs...that's fun.
