FAT32 is your safest bet.

I second FAT 32.

I formatted my thumb drive in FAT 32 because it has to work on Mac, Linux, and Windows. No problems reading/writing on any OS. I think that FAT 32 tops out at 37GB though, so it isn't a good choice for a large drive--unless you like lots of partitions.

that was what I thought. I can't seem to format FAT32 in OSX so i tried it in Linux, and it worked. Linux mounted it and I could access the directory. But when I connected it to OSX, it told me that the drive was unreadable by it. Is there an OSX software that can format it to FAT32?

Disk Utility--under the Erase tab--will format your drive in FAT32.
