I just lived in the dorms for a year, wasn't very fun either. From the looks of the other pictures, everyone else had nice dorms than I did. All the stuff in my room was wobbly, and old. Anyways, here's what my setup looked like.

I moved out of my dorm 4 days ago, one of the happiest moments of my life; it was a dive, populated with wasters. I didn't see fit to immortalise it in pixels!

I digress, my "office" usually looked like this.

Edit: because this is a Mac user forum, I feel compelled to assume you're all CS undergrads. I know this is wrong, because I'm reading 16thC British history... so what's everyone doing in these cubicles?

My Dorm Setup

http://homepage.mac.com/manosira/ebay/campus/DormSetup.jpg

With the little space there was, I found myself force into this corner. I got my new Powerbook there in the middle on an I-Lap Stand. Sync up to the PB are my bluetooth phone on the left and mouse on the right. Hooked up to the PB are my old Altec Lansing speakers (can't afford the new silver ones to match my PB yet) and my Ipod 3G. I also have hooked up to the PB my memory card reader, scanner, and printer which are all on the media cart on the right. There's no AC in my room so I had to buy a desktop fan, which is that hunka tower in the back. Works out nicely though, because it not only cools me, but my PB also. Not pictures is my airport express which allows me to leave this little chaotic corner and venture off into the lounge. :D

I included pics of my Tv with the surround sound because I have my wireless network connected to my surround sound for music.

I was in a hurry so I just posted my photos on my free earthlink website. Ignore the stupid "photography" blurb they throw in there. Anyways tell me what ya think :D

So I have lived here for two weeks, and I swear that the room is still this bare today as it is in teh pictures...oh yea and God I hate and love Bowling Green's dorms! I honestly don't mind living in my dorm or with the people on the floor. What I hate is that my desk is like half a desk...it blows...so to rememdy the problem I borrowed one of my neighbors medicine cabinet doors and use it as an extension.

Ok here they are:

This is the monitor of my roommates computer, just to show you how small the desks are. Also this kid's computer is so weird. It's a Pentium 3 with 128Meg Ram and running Windows Millenium. He has never reinstalled it, reformatted nothing. Yet, somehow it runs perfectly. He has never received a blue screen of death, virus nothing. It is so wierd.

Anyways, I shall see if I can dig up some better pics of the room and such.

Yeah, the dorm desks always seem to be pretty small. Mine was too last year, and boy did it pay off to have a laptop! A desktop wouldn't even really be functional with the angle the moniter has to be at and all that. Not to mention then you don't have any actual workspace! Ugh, I like my apartment :D I'll post a picture once I get back there (I'm home for the holiday :D)

Probably irrelevant and irritating to this topic, but this is puzzling me: do students really live in dormitories at university in America? From the pictures they look a bit more like shared rooms at boarding school. How many people live in a room like this? Are you required to live in them, on campus?

I suppose I thought that paying such vast sums of money to go to uni in the US in the first place, you would be provided with better accomodation than in th UK (where it would be normal to have a single (occasionally double) room for the first year, then share a flat/house in town with fellow students for the rest).

Just my ignorant questioning...

Does no-one steal your stuff?

It's commonpractice for people here to stay at dorms in college. First year students usually have to share, then as they gain seniority, they can take a single room or move out to a nearby apartment/shared house. Colleges (in my state, at least) require that you live in the dorms for your first two years, then you may live wherever you wish. Many students choose to live in the dorms for convenience sake, and to be around their friends.

As for stuff getting stolen, that's up to your roomate. Usually, there's a mutual trust going on there.

I don't know what he used... but... My camera Canon Powershot S1IS does this automajically. The download process then provides the capability to sew them together and readjust for screw ups.

Many places in the U.S. require you to stay in dorms for the first year, and then you can live wherever you like. I chose to live at home my first year and a term, and then I moved into a co-op house a couple of blocks from campus. A couple of friends of mine lived in dorms for two years and then moved into the same co-op. Another friend of mine lived in the dorm last year and she's living in the same one for her second year. BTW, she never locked her door and she lost more stuff than got stolen--nothing got stolen.

I think that it's more common for people to live in dorms for longer at private universities than state universities in the U.S.

I'd say a majority of freshmen live in the dorms, especially those who are going away from home. At U of Arizona though, there's not enough dorms, so you're only allowed to live in them for two years at most. Most freshmen stay in the dorms there and then move to an apartment or house. And about the stealing thing, it's just kind of one of those things you have to live with. You and your roommate just have to trust each other with locking the door etc.

Nope. He's a musician. Could care less about his computer. He said he figures it works so well because he tries to use it as little as possible.

Actually though, we think that if we get an apartment or something together we might split the cost of a Powermac G5.

Dude, first thing I saw when looking at your pics was that "this gotta be RIT." I'm another RIT student, first year micro-electronics engineering student. Where do you live on-campus? Since I'm deaf, I'm in a hell-hol... erm... Ellingson hall (2055). You've got a nice setup yourself.

Decided to put both beds together since all my good friends moved out so we dont have gatherings/homework parties/movie nights in my dorm anymore :(.

My desk is covered in papers and soda cans right now due to finals week coming soon.

Wow. That's a huge dorm room.

That's only the single one, so if you think thats huge, you can just image how big the doubles are (for 2 people, unless you're an RA or lucky enough to score your own).

Sometimes they squeeze two people in a single, I remember my friend giving a tour, and one of the people asked why 2 people in a single had to pay the same as 2 in a double, so yeah, my college cuts a LOT of corners in this dorm.

You're lucky. I have a single and it's not that big.

If that's a single, why do you have 2 beds?

Beats the hell out of me. It's basically a bought-out old Fairfield Inn hotel building.

your dorm looks like at one point in time it was a motel/hotel.... was it?
I wish my single in college was that big. Mine was just long enough to fit the extra long twin bed.... :p

I am going to college next year at Lipscomb here in Nashville and i need some ideas on what to do to my dorm. My friends and i really like computers and modern furniture but nothing is counted out. Thanks

I highly recommend a floor lamp that dims. My dorms were always so bright at night when I just wanted to relax and watch TV. I recommend one that has flexible arms so you and point light at specific places in the room. :)
Also a cheap throw rug... who knows what's on the carpet :o

I guess, I mean, no real complaints although you'd think for that much, they'd do a few more things (A/Cs are extremely dirty, they plan to replace the carpet due to poor cleaning, our internet speed was cut by almost 90% since last year for some odd reason).
