View Full Version : New Apple iPod Ad?

MacRumors
May 3, 2004, 07:25 PM
A few anonymous reports hinted (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/04/20040430092833.shtml) at a new iPod ad filmed in New York in the recent past.

Today, the following iPod advertisement (Link (http://homepage.mac.com/jeffgarden/ipodad.mpg),Mirror (http://movies.differentdistrict.com/play.php?id=1043_0_28_0_M44)) surfaced on the internet.

The ad appears to be a new Apple advertisement, but reveals no new iPod features as hinted in the Page 2 report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/04/20040430092833.shtml).

Ah well, glad to see they're still advertising.

Couldn't have put it any better myself. Bravo Apple! Good ad. It is cool to see you keep the attractive color scheme and yet move beyond and don't move beyond an existing kind of campaign. Keep innovating.

Looks like the same old iPod as before, but nice to know that their still advertising the iPod, God forbid Apple actually show any other commercial that doesn't have any thing to do with the iPod.

Hmmm... could this one be leaked to throw us off, maybe not. It's seems risky to film an ad for a new product when Apple likes to be so secret - there's too many people involved in a simple ad production. Maybe we only see it up close once because they're going to edit that one part again with a new iPod...

i ripped that with EyeTV (if you're using the homepage.mac.com/jeffgarden link) in case you're wondering how EyeTV rips come out. that's "standard" quality. there's also "high quality" as an option

and the song is "Ride" from The Vines

is anybody even sure that this is the new one they were "supposedly filming" last week? it could be an old one they filmed a while ago.

but why would apple release a new commercial for a product that's already a year old? unless they filmed two commercials, one for the old 3g and one for the new 4g?

or maybe it's a sign that the 4g's won't be coming out anytime soon?

Actually, a friend of mine just watched the posted ad and said he saw it on tv sometime recently (within the last week). He's 80% sure that he saw it, so there's a good chance that there's ANOTHER commercial on the way. Here's hoping!

I think its a cool ad - something new. But I do agree with a previous post that it doesn't seem very "Apple". There is also something in it that annoys me:
At first glance it looks as if each poster is dancing independantly of the others, but when you watch it again, you see that each colour poster is doing the exact same move at the exact same time (ie. all the yellow posters are moving in synchronisation with each other, same with all the green, etc etc.) So it ends up looking like they just copied and pasted the same clip multiple times.

I am very suprised at how many people were actually expecting a 4G iPod. The iPod mini is the new iPod and was only released a few months ago. Demand is far outstripping supple, so they have not yet reached the potential of milking that cash cow yet. Bringing out a new iPod now would create confusion, as people still see the mini as the 'new thing', and still can't even get their hands on it yet. I forecast a 4G ipod around September

Apple has done the same with the G5, bringing attention back again to bring up sales in anticipation of updates. Of course, they have been slowly advertising, like leaving the G5 on their site until they had something new to put up. Also recently I have seen two page G5 ads in PC magazines and gamer mags.

This commercial is probably just trying to start up talk and give the ipod a "presence" to hold people over and still have some sales. It's a low key, low cost way of creating a buzz in the rumor community and keeping in the general public eye as well.

The clicking has always been there. You probably have it turned off. I don't think that they would film a new commercial just to let you know that the iPod now clicks.

The iPods do have little built-in annunciators and they do click unless you turned that feature off. It's not played through the headphones though. One local character thinks that mine is a geiger counter of some sort.

The ad looks great. Apple, as ever, exhibiting good taste in music. I think the ad is a nice counterpoise to the fantasy of the last iPod campaign—dancing like that with headphones on is physically impossible without ripping the 'phones out of your ears. This ad is much more realistic (posters excepted) in the way it captures the experience of life with headphones on.

I hope some wiseass group doesn't complain about crossing a street with headphones on.

Um...the ad....that this entire thread is about. A friend of mine just watched that specific ad...the ad that the thread is about....and then he said to me, in English, that he saw that same ad.......the one this thread is about......on television. He wasn't absolutely positive, but he thought he saw it. Judging from the hundred or so other posts saying that people already saw it on tv, I think he was correct. What I was saying was that hopefully, this is NOT the ad that they just finished filming. Hopefully, this ad....the one the thread is about...is older and there is another NEW iPod ad...the one they just finished filming...on the way...........is that any clearer?? (Hopefully this just confuses everyone more! yay!)

they also click as you scroll through lists. but not when you change the volume or fast forward in a song (/runs to make sure he's right). ;)

and i like the commercial. it keeps continuity by having the silhouettes, but allows apple to move in a new sort of direction with the ads at a later time if they so choose. :)

Let's not be ridiculous. There is no 4g ipod. And you don't know if there ever will be. And it's quite silly to be waiting on a new iPod that may or may not be less appealing if it ever does surface.

yah seriously, all you have to do is pause it and read the very blurry text on the ipod to find this out.

on the topic of ipod ads, my fav is still the orig with the guy dancing to propellerheads (http://movies.differentdistrict.com/play.php?id=197_0_28_0_M44)

and the best apple music advert is definitely the one with all the artists on the stage, george clinton, wilco, amy mann, ziggy etc. (http://movies.differentdistrict.com/play.php?id=282_0_28_0_M58)

Am I the only one who thinks this looks like another ad that's been on TV lately. Not an Apple ad, I think it was for Dockers or something.

Anyway, if I remember correctly, it's got a guy getting out of bed and getting dressed and then a bunch of shots of him dressed different ways doing different things, inluding one where he's walking the sidewalk listening to an iPod.

Now, I'm know I'm not crazy. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

The first part (where he walks out of the building) probably is around the Little Italy area (based on the Italian flag and the general look of the neighborhood). The second part, based on the Bx15 bus sign, takes place on Madison and East 125th Street, in East Harlem.

About this not being a brand new iPod model...

Selling more of the iPods already on the market is a very sensible use of Apple's ad budget.

About the click...

It doesn't matter if a real iPod clicks or not. It was necessary for this one to click so everyone knows it was paused and restarted.

The only iPod improvement I'd like to see is with respect to the battery. Eight hours is simply not long enough, and I don't like the idea of shelling out $60 for a third-party battery pack that a) is overpriced and b) is unwieldy.

Also, new battery with said longer battery life should also be more durable and reliable. My 30 gig iPod has now reached the 1 year point; it's running fine (crosses fingers), but a number of posts on Macrumors have me wondering just how long until the inevitable.

This hipster theme is starting to get old. Though it presents a cool image it also excludes those who don't fit such an image. Why not aim advertising at others? How about a trucker playing hours of country music from an iPod with a car stereo adapter? A teacher listening to jazz while grading papers? A window washer listening to classical music while on the outside of a skyscraper? An accountant listening to classic rock while doing paperwork? Broaden the market and Apple will continue to have trouble keeping up with the rapid growth in demand for the iPod.

An accountant listening to classic rock while doing paperwork?Would this be a risky message to their original target market? If your teacher had an iPod, maybe you wouldn't think it was so cool to have one!

Also, a mainstream TV ad has to be aimed for the mainstream TV audience - more kids than teachers. But let's say they created an ad intended for your jazz-loving teacher in a jazz magazine, or a teacher magazine, or on a jazz radio station. Then they might expand their target population without changing the original message to the original audience.

Anybody notice that the ads on the apple page are numbered rather oddly?

top center is the one this thread first discussed, with the actual actor, the posters, and the vines song. They call it wild postings.

Next line, there's an orange one and a green one, which are again dancing shadows, but now the shadows have shadows, and have some greytones and stuff. hmmm..... not sure about that. But, the one on the RIGHT is called ipod TV spot 2, and the one on the left is called ipod TV spot 4! Where is three?

has anybody seen another one? is it not on apple's site or not yet out?

I'm not sure how old it is getting... it's a bit older for us mac people, but then again I don't watch much TV. I think apple needs to be aware that they need to keep it fresh and new, but I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping with the hipster/dancing shadows thing for a long, long time, so long as they find ways to make it new. Yes, it will reach saturation level and get old, but if you're clever, there's always a new direction to take it from within the theme, and when it's become so ubiquitous, you can play off of your own cliche's and make jokes with yourself about it, and always find a new spin. I think the shadows and the bold colors, and the hipster thing is a really good basis, and when that gets old, they just need to play with it and make that the medium, but not the focus. kinda like the credit card ads that end in "xxxxx: Priceless". The sappy clasic notions of priceless got old, and now they keep finding new stuff. That one's been going a while, and it's good, because it's so recognizable, that what might be lost in origionality is easily made up for. Just have to find different angles and perspectives to keep a classic fresh and new.

And, if you think there is an end to the possiblities within a theme, just pick up a new yorker and flip through until you find a man, or maybe two, on a desert island with a single palm tree and one line to make something new in. Or, a progression of fish, amphibian, mammal, ape, human coming out of the water. Or oh so many others. And, every year, plenty of new interpretations are found.

I would like apple to stick with this. Sometimes a particular frame can be limiting, but sometimes it just makes you think harder, and come up with something really creative.

Edit: Meant to make this more about how now they can branch out into different genre's, etc. so long as it keeps the theme and has music that universally sounds good and noticable on the first listen. They can move beyond hipster, so long as it sticks with their, actual good music, not overpopularized, but also good music that the masses will like, and not by education, but by instinct.

One last thing: they seem to be changing the dancing ipod people a good bit-used to be really simple images, pure black on a color, etc. and now they have a lot more details, and look like people, and have grey belts, etc. Of course, in the really simple images, the ipod stood out, b/c it was the one thing that didn't match the color theme. And I just realized why the move to complexity (which I don't really like, I'm a minimalist). Because thye can. Now, it's so recognized already, they don't need to make the ipod stand out, nearly as much, or have the ads stick to such a strict style, because, everybody sees black outline dancing, the white cables, and doesnt' even need the brightly colored background to before they think: ipod. Still, I'm a little dissapointed, because the ads are kindof chaotic, not nearly as clean as they used to be.

Anybody notice that the ads on the apple page are numbered rather oddly?

There are a couple more shadow ads that are no longer up there. One had Feature Cast's Channel Surfing, and the other was NERD's Rockstar.

Some of the singing ads (http://www.apple.com/music/ads/) are still up.

Not an Apple ad, I think it was for Dockers or something.

You're right -- it's the new Gap ad (http://www.gap.com/more/). It's a guy walking through a big city, in some shots holding an iPod.

I think it's hilarious that some of you are so starved for a new iPod that you're debating the significance of whether or not it clicks. They've always clicked. Don't any of you actually have one?

Gap/Apple fun fact: The Fresh Crop Weekday Gap ad has a Studio Display in it. One of the few companies that don't obscure the Apple logos in their ads.

It took a while to notice how much they did that, something to do with wearing headphones at the time.

This can only be looked at as good. Apple advertising for a product that wasn't recently updated is awesome. Now if only they'd do some new PowerBook ads so people would be even more jealous of my new 15"er.

he walks offscreen wearing black shoes...then comes back on screen wearing either white rollerskates (blades...resolution is bad) or white shoes on a skateboard...weird. does anyone know which it is?
I think the guy on the skateboard is supposed to be someone else.

Haha, yea. I didn't understand what the original guy was saying. I thought it was pretty obvious that it was 2 different people.

Hmm, this is just what I thought when I first saw the ad.

It feels as though its been cut short - not sure why but it does. I wonder whether apple may release another ad, which starts identically this one, but at the end, when the guy on the skateboard/rollerblades goes past, suddenyl zooms to him. He then presses play on his iPod Mini (most likely, but possibly 4G), and the music and ad continues, this time at high speed with the other iPod.

Anyone else think this could be the case???
Afterall, as it has been noted that it seems a little weird that they filmed a new ad, and in New York - so if the ad morphed into a new version, in a few weeks time could this be the case?? I'm not 100% sure, being in the UK here, as the iPod adverts don't make it onto our screens very often. But I'm guessing by the sounds of everyone else that the iPod ads are very popular in the states - so maybe this will be the medium for them to launch a new product?

Just my penny's worth.

Apple should REALLY add a tiny song/artist credit bug for each of their iPod/iTunes ads to let people know what damn song to buy...

If you watch the ad on the apple sight there is a link with the name of the song and artist that takes you to the song in itms

For those who needs answers to the questions:

1. It says the name of the song right below the movie.
2. Yes, that looks a heck of a lot like where I live: Downtown NYC.
3. Yes, he is a hipster.
4. Yes, pretty much everyone in the 18-28 bracket looks like that in the village. :-)

Marko, i'm surprised that Apple don't advertize so much in the U.K where they probably sell more iPods than in the U.S. (proportionate to the population). Here in Germany you hardly ever see Apple ads although it's a big untapped market as far as iPods go (the largest population in Europe by far). They're just beginning to catch on - the Germans are usually a year or so behind the trends from the U.S. or U.K..
My younger colleagues haven't heard of the iPod ... yet!

That's because Steve Jobs used to be on the board of directors for Gap. Consider it as paying homage.

Ever wonder why the old school Gap Ads with the people standing in front of a white background resemble the Apple switch ads?

I was thinking something along those lines, but another question: when he paused the song, the iPod made a clicking noise, and in the time I have owned my iPod the only 'noise' has been made from the earbuds. Did anybody else notice the 'clicking' noise?

huh? i thought you can choose whether you like or not to have the clicking sound when pressing buttons..

is anybody even sure that this is the new one they were "supposedly filming" last week? it could be an old one they filmed a while ago.

but why would apple release a new commercial for a product that's already a year old? unless they filmed two commercials, one for the old 3g and one for the new 4g?

or maybe it's a sign that the 4g's won't be coming out anytime soon?
this really sucks! arrrrrg...I want a new 4g ipod now!  :(

I TOTALLY AGREE.... What Is really being featured in the new ad is not the old ipods but rather "HOW COOL COLOR IS". A PERFECT WAY TO LAUNCH THIER NEW IPODS.. What if the new Ipods magically reflect the color of the figurative ads along the wall... hmnnnnnn oh yea i want a new Ipod already. Stop the foreplay...

Wow, you and Crunked both sound like you're ready to either blow your brains out or bust a nut over these 4G iPods when who knows if what the timetable for them might be.

It's not that important right now! PM's and iMacs and PBs big time are the real products apple needs to focus on.

To the folks who liked the Vines song: don't bother buying "Ride" from iTMS, get the album "Winning Days" instead. 11 great tracks, you won't be disappointed. And while you're at it, get their debut album "Highly Evolved" as well, it's just as good.

I'll take a shot at it. What about something like:

A professor sitting at his desk. Morphs into a silhouette of himself at the desk with an iPod, playing a classical piece.

A trucker driving on an interstate. Morphs into a silhouette of himself behind the wheel with an ipod (wires going into the dashboard) playing a country/western song.

A Jamaican walking down the street. Morphs into a silhouette of himself walking with an iPod playing a Reggae tune.

A teenage girl web-surfing (maybe visiting ITMS). Morphs into a silhouette of herself listening to an iPod, playing a pop song.

Finally, a subway full of people. Morphs into a crowd of silhouettes, each with iPods, with songs of all four genres playing at once. (Try to pick ones where the result won't be total cacophany.)

Fade to black. Image of a row of iPods (five minis in the five colors, with a white one on either end of the row). Caption: "iPod + iTunes: music for the masses."

maybe i'm dumb when it comes to advertising, but apple should do this idea you two have put together. would be pretty cool and a little more broad reaching. which couldn't hurt at this point

What is all this whining about the lack of a 4G iPod. Have you looked at the sales numbers? If you're selling almost a million units at at least $299 (that's not even counting the fact your basic iPod sells for like $400+ in the UK) in the last QUARTER there's absolutely no reason for a product refresh. Maybe when sales begin to drop off, but with the Mini Apple solved that problem because people who don't want to spend $299 might want to spend $250 instead, and they've given themselves room to lower the price by $30-50 on both units.

So it would seem a need for a 4G iPod is for the kind of people who want to play Zelda during Algebra 2--get a Gameboy dude.

I wouldn't mind color, but I don't need it and I certainly don't really need to look at my latest pictures on my Mp3 player--I like to keep that thing in my pocket in case I get jumped.

The ad was good, but I agree with other posts that Apple might want to target people who don't look like they own a $900 jacket. Yah.

the song is "Ride" from The Vines
I know this is an old thread, but there's something new to report. Nissan is using the same song, Ride by The Vines, on their latest TV commercials. Whenever I hear it, it gives me the urge to buy a new... iPod!
