Apple Announces Free Summer Workshops for Kids

Apple has announced a series of free workshops (http://www.apple.com/retail/camp/) at its retail stores targeted at children ages 8-12. Known as Apple Camp, the program consists of four three-hour workshops targeting such skills as movies, music, photos, and presentations. Workshops are offered in the latter half of July at most Apple retail stores, although not all locations will be offering all four workshops.

Participants are limited to two of the four sessions and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Apple will be provide all necessary equipment and sample media, although participants are welcome to bring their own media and equipment if they desire.

Pre-registration is required, and many of the sessions have already been booked solid, with some offering positions on wait lists while others are closed entirely.

Harkens back to the summer programming camps offered through schools and a non-profit called I.E.R. back in the early 80's in the Chicago area. Lots of kids learning BASIC on Apple IIe's.

This is more of a light version, though focusing on apps, not programming.

Having been a parent in a class where a kid was dropped off..... i can only hope they enforce this.

I'm bummed they are full - i had been forgetting to check on them. My kids enjoyed them immensely 2 summers ago. Gas prices kept us home last summer - i was hoping they could do one this summer.

they probably had room for 5 to 6 kids and then 5 to 6 adults. so i can see why they would fill up quick.

It was actually announced yesterday. These classes always fill up very quickly each and every year. My family last year had some kids at ones in South Beach and Soho, and they filled up within hours of the announcement. Of course Apple wants to sell Macs; they can't help how quickly these things fill up. And if you're thinking that they should open more sessions since they filled up so fast.... Trust me, they're full to the rim with the stores ability to manage the ones they have so far. Running these camps ain't easy by any means.

Of course, judging by your screen name, maybe I care more about responding to you and hoping to alleviate your frustration than you care to even read this post.

I took my daughter to an iMovie camp last year. She had fun, met some new people, and got to take home a DVD. For me, the price was right. :):apple:

So on one hand I have my kids pediatrician telling us that we should limit our kids to 30 minutes of screen time PER DAY and it's summer, let them run around outside get exercise and fresh air and on the other apple beckoning my kids with crack, I mean a Mac. :)

I would have loved to have something like this when I was a kid, lucky kids nowadays
