Easy way to downscale HD video (.mov) to SD?

Pretty much what the title says. I'm trying to get a movie file to play on an older system that doesn't have a GPU beefy enough to render high-definition video without chugging, so I want to know if its possible to scale the file down to standard definition so it will play smoother; and if so, what's the easiest way to do that?

Handbrake will do this for you.

Handbrake will do this for you.
I tried it, Handbrake won't convert .mov files.

I don't know if they'll work but you can try visualhub or isquint. And you can try (if you have it) to import it into iMovie and export it in sd. But that will take some time I think.
A paid solution is quicktime pro. If it will read the file, it will be able to export it. I believe there's even an option when you don't pay for it. (something like save as).
VLC is able to convert it as well. (VCL is free, and extremely strong, it reads anything, is free, has never frozen on me).
