Transfer from camcorder to DVD using iMac

Newbie question:

I have an 8-year old Sony camcorder that uses HI-8 TAPES (not discs). Is there a way to transfer the information on the tapes to a DVD using my new 2009 iMac?

I have done it using a DVD recorder before, using audio/video patch cords from the camcorder to the recorder. But I haven't tried using a computer before for this task.

Does it have a FireWire or USB cable? If so, you could use iMovie/iDVD.

I'd stick to copying camcorder direct to DVD, much less hassle.

That's what I do, to copy camcorder tapes to DVD as (camera originals) backup, even off my DV and SD camcorders.
