hey guys, i woke up this morning and my iPod was dead. i turned it on and i had 2% battery left. i plugged it in to this Apple charger thing i got at the Apple storewhen i got my iPod Touch. i saw it wasnt charging so i thought it was the charger so i plugged my iPod into my laptop but nothing happened. my iPod died after i plugged it into my iPod so i knew it wasnt charging. i tried all 4 USB ports on my laptop and all the ports on my desktop computer but nothing. when i try to turn it on i get the red battery thing. i didnt do anything to my iPod, it was working fine the other day and it was only under my pillow overnight not charging. this iPod isnt even a year old, i got it last christmas. i dropped it on the sidewalk once but that was a few months ago and it worked fine after that. please help me

Plug it in to charge and then hold down the sleep and home button until it turns on.

Any chance it could be your connector cable? If that got damaged no connection will form (obviously) - do you have spare?

It should be charging, if you don't have another charging cable like a previous poster suggested, I would set up an appointment at a genius bar, and have it looked at since you are still under warranty.

i said i tried my second cable. do i still have the warranty even though i jailbroke it? i thought that voids the warranty?

If you jailbroke it then you need to do a DFU mode (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034) + a restore in iTunes, that will erase any traces of the jailbreak. :)

Do you have access to another iPod with the same dock connector that you can test out the cables. (can't tell you have many times I swapped a bad cable for another bad cable...)
Does the computer recognize that it has been plugged in?
Leave it plugged in for a while. It may be so dead that it will take a while for it to bolster up enough power to show that it is charging...

Really strange!
If you aren't sure about the warranty, you have nothing to loose by booking a genius appointment (I'd recommend removing traces of jailbreak as previously mentioned) - the genius will fix it if it's in warranty, and you won't loose out if it's not (except for a bit of time).

when you say genius do you mean an iPod Touch specialist at the Apple store?
GedBlue
May 23, 2009, 01:49 PM
Yep - though they're usually all specialists in everything!
Even if you didn't but it from an Apple store, or if you don't have the receipt they'll still usually take a look and sort it out, as they can track their products by serial number.

There is no "iPod touch Specialist", there are only "Mac Geniuses". You can create a free appointment here (http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/). :)

Just different modes to put your device in before you do a restore in iTunes, you can do recovery mode like this (http://www.iphonealley.com/tips-and-tricks/save-your-iphone-with-recovery-mode).

Then it looks like you are SOL for now. I would leave it plugged in, and schedule a genius bar appointment, and leave it plugged in until then, and hopefully it will turn on in the meanwhile. Keep us updated on what the people at the Apple Store say. :)

Technically if it is jailbroken the warranty is "void" but if it won't turn on, I don't think they will be able to tell.

Exactly. Do a DFU restore (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034) to be safe.

that's great. :) For future references once the device is dfu mode itunes will recognize it as "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode" and then you just have to click restore.

hell yeah!! mooching their wifi on my Windows laptop =D lmao!! i should have jailbroken my iPod right there in the store
they gave me a first gen. i asked if they could give me a second gen and i asked how much it would cost to get a second gen replacement but they said they cant do that. they said i could bring my first gen in and id get 10% off a second gen iPod Touch. so that would be 30 bucks off a 16 gig which would be about 27o bucks =/ i can find a better deal on craigslist =P
i also bought that invisibleSHIELD thing from this vendor outsie the Apple store for 25 bucks. i have air bubbles around the edges of my iPod where the black border thing raises higher than the screen. will they go away over time?
jmann
May 30, 2009, 12:45 AM
Most of the bubbles with the invisible shield will go away eventually. If it starts peeling or having problems, take it back to the vendor and they will give you a new one. They all come with a lifetime warranty.
Austin2048

ok, i will do that. o...m...g... i was able to scratch my invisible shield.....

Hi,
I have two touches that have done this . One is out of warranty purchased through MacMall, and the other in warranty purchased through Best Buy.
Besides begging for a replacement, has anyone successfully fixed this problem? I have followed all of the steps you outlined for Austin, and it is hit and miss if it works or not.
thanks
Jane

Ditto. Just stopped charging after 3-4 months. I went to the genius bar and they made me set up an appointment for another day that I was never able to go to with my busy schedule. In a few months I forgot about the problem because I picked up the DroidX... now its 4 months out of warranty and my girlfriend is asking what I did with her gift. Wish there was a solution.
