If you turn viewing of hidden folders on, you should be able to get them manually from the photos folder on the iPod.

To enable this, open Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Then Option-Command-Esc and restart Finder

No problem ...
To turn the files off again, just replace the YES in the command with NO

Did you run the Terminal commands to see hidden files?

I did follow the above instructions. I see the photos folder in the ipod, but inside there are only 'thumbs' and photo database, which opens up with the terminal

If they are on the iPod doesn't that mean they were converted, so will be of reduced quality anyhow?
Obviously if that is your only copy though you don't really have any other options. No backups at all?

On the Touch, can you just sync them off with iTunes like you would an iPhone or no?
