View Full Version : How long did it take you to get over your first dent??

I was cooking dinner the other night. My aluminum macbook was sitting on a bar stool when the top to a frying pan began to fall slowly toward it....i made a desperate grab for it...but failed. It crash landed on my beloved macbook. I could barely stand the thoughts of walking around the bar to see the damage.
Directly to the left or the apple logo there are two very shallow dents. You can barely seen them if standing directly over the computer...but still. It hurt me bad...in a bad way.

First of all my condolences for your dented MB. Snap some pics of it.
I'm trying to get over seeing the shiny wear on some of my keys on the keyboard.

Well they are not wearing off like fading out. What I mean is that they get shiny and there's no way of removing that. This is a common thing on the new unibodies unfortunately.

That's pretty common on pretty much all laptop keyboards. I've had it happen on almost all my computers, Mac and Windows computers alike.
Luckily though, I haven't gotten a dent on my MBP in the 6 months I've had it (although knock on wood).

Haha. Good question.
My first dent was on the display side. Took me over a month to get over it. When I first got it I would constantly rub it.
I got a smaller dent recently on the same display side. Took me quicker to get over it, less than a week. Probably because I got it before and its smaller this time.

...my seven year old Sony Vaio PCG-TR3A has mostly no lettering left on the keyboard but if you can touch type it's not an issue...

It took about a millisecond. Then I realized I'm not dead and my family is still well and the materials that make up this computer still function... and really that it doesn't matter.

exactly. all these people "i prayed that god would take one of my children instead" are nuts.
it's a computer. a tool. it performs a function and is easily replaced if it no longer functions the way it should. dents, if anything, give your laptop 'character' and at least allow for differentiation from the millions of others produced in a factory in china just ****ing like it.
thats loser talk;)

Not long. It's an aluminum laptop, all you have to do is look at it the wrong way and it will become dented.

This isn't a new issue, right? I mean all of the people that have had PowerBooks and MacBook Pros for a long time must have had to deal with this. But I guess it is a new thing when it happens to yourself.

This explains my recent stroke.
I had my e2008 MBP, white BT keyboard and power supply on top of my fridge, which I keep clear as a kid- and spill-free storage zone in the kitchen. When it was time to bring the stuff outside to do some work, I picked up the pile and turned away, whereupon the cord caught briefly on the freezer door, pulling enough on me to lose my hold on the expensive stack. I pulled my arms into my body to do a desperate hug-save, but the keyboard flipped in midair, the adaptor hit me on the chin, and the MBP slid down my stomach; I stuck out my leg 45° and the lappy skied downhill towards my feet. I swiveled my toes and it skipped gracefully off my foot to come to a sliding stop in the middle of the kitchen.
There are no dents, dings or scratches anywhere to be found on the MBP, and everything works great. Except the keyboard, which seems to have bit the biscuit. It was living on borrowed time anyways, as I spilled a cup of coffee on it last year. The other cord wrapper thingy broke off the adaptor (the first one came off not long after I bought it), but I haven't found it yet.
The irony is that earlier that day, I noticed the plastic gasket had a chip broken off the front right corner. I have no idea how that happened, since I am always so careful about my electronics.
EDIT: I repaired the keyboard, and now it's working again.

Nope. I had a 17" Powerbook for 4+ years, never a dent or a blemish. I didn't baby it or cherish it, I just used it normally, took it everywhere with me and didn't treat it like crap. My Macbook Air is dent free as well. The Apple notebooks don't dent that easily, that it purely from user carelessness and nothing else.

No, it's the only "a" dog I could think of. The pun worked better with AppaloosaCare, but that's a horse. :)

I care about my laptop but just because I worked very hard to earn it and because of that i want to keep it in good condition for as long as i can.
I dont have dents or anything, its 7 months old and only has one small scratch on the bottom. I predict by resale value will be pretty good if i choose to sell it in a few years time. (im not letting myself replace it for a while, ive been spending too much on computers!)

But accidents happen and when they do... it's still just a freakin' hunk of plastic and metal. Press on.

i dont have a big cry if i damage something, i get over it quickly and easily but i will do all that i can (within reason) to prevent it happening in the first place.

My bad..I thought it would be a fun little thread. Something differnet than the million "what do you expect on the next macbook?" threads.
Fact is that I'm very proud of my macbook. I hated to see it get it's first dent..just like anyone would be when that shopping carts rolls into your new car. I don't think anyone here is really standing on the ledge about to jump. Christ.

It's a problem on any laptop that uses non-polished/shiny keys from the factory. It's just more noticeable on black keys.
Some laptops, like HP for instance have shiny-coated plastic keys. They don't wear the same as our matte-finish type keys, but instead get slightly dull with time.

It's funny that people are mocking over dents in a laptop, but they'll go to Apple for a replacement iphone with a dent or crack. Why the double standard?

Just today my Unibody Macbook slipped off my bed and fell to the floor. The case is now slightly bent so that it rubs when opening and closing. I'm hoping I can fix it. :(

The cracking issue with the iPhone 3G is akin to the cracking issue with the polycarbonate Macbook palmrests...both are valid issues.
Anything caused by users+dropping things= not Apple's fault.

I would pay to see a shiny dog... maybe chrome plated?! NOW WAIT! THAT DENTS TO EASILY. MacBooks should be made out of rubber and jello pudding pops... dent free.

When I got my first dent, it was trying to put on a shield skin (figures); this was on my former computer.
Now I just use the computer like I should and I have had no problems; a few close calls, but so far so good.

I have a small (1mm) gouge below the right speaker and another on the right corner radius, did some hand sanding to clean up the corner so it wasn't raised and below the speaker was fine already. It was caused by my camera tripod coming apart, my camera was fine and my MBP was fine and I'm over it now but I did have a moment of panic. Silly.

No dents on mine yet. However I am in constant fear of finger oils on the keys. I have seen PLENTY of laptops that have keys that look like mirrors because of how worn/oily they are. I can't stand that feel, or the look. I have a keyboard cover on my Macbook Pro, and just ordered one for my Air.
The bad part is that the cover I have for my Macbook Pro is the iSkin. Its thick, thus when I close the lid the screen (matte) touches it and then my screen looks very dirty. But at least that wipes off. The cover I am getting for my Air is very thin, and shouldn't touch the screen when shut.

Not speaking from personal experience or anything, but what ever happened to the people who used to say things like..... "My notebook has been through dozens of flights, hundreds of taxi cabs, sat on, dropped twice, fell out of my car once, a divorce, two jobs, and an angry 6yr old....it still runs great!"
A friend of mine had a fire in his apartment and his G3 iBook got toasted....still booted up. He used the insurance money to buy his 15" Al Powerbook which he still has today--that thing has been through 'battle', still works fine.
I just got a 15" uMBP and I know that when it comes to dents/scratches, it's never "if" but when you get one. You can't sweat the small stuff!

PS: I forgot to mention--my favorite Mac owners are those w/ a Mac notebook that has duct-tape holding it together. Those are the true Mac-heads!
I saw a guy w/ a 15" Ti Powerbook that had carefully-applied ducttape holding the bottom on at the San Jose airport......priceless. :apple:

Mine has!
Several house moves, bus rides (so much worse than a taxi), sat on countless times, dropped onto hard surfaces, thrown instead of passed, been in backpacks which have been whacked off walls, several schools, college, various university libraries
But mine is made of plastic, so it doesn't really show :D
