This screenshot from Best Buy's inventory system was submitted to us. It shows an unreleased Apple product in the category of "Mobile Computing" within Best Buy's inventory system. The 'In Stock' date for the item is May 31st.
Best Buy inventory screens always seem to generate a lot of interest, but we've been told in the past that these entries are made without official knowledge from Apple. As a result, there is likely no particular significance to the findings.

A lot of news for the iPhone in the past few minutes!!
Seems interesting - could it be the tablet we're talking about?
Does anyone mind checking out those dimensions and seeing what they're about?
At the top in the model (MC240LL/A) - does MC mean mobile computer?
I think you should remove the bottom bit of the image - time, date and others so the person who snapped this doesn't get caught out... just for his / her protection!
And it's a rev. a product!
The iPhone's serial starts with K26 - not MC

Yeah - nice catch.
I was going to say - the weight of the item is 89000 LB, right?
If there is power cabs and a sim card or whatever else, it would weight to be at least a little more?
I am guessing this is the new iPhone. Maybe if the user that posted this could sneak on to the system again and tell us what the dimensions for the iPhone showed up as? :D

Product Dimensions: The box and the item are the same dimensions so that means one of two things.
a) This is just a speculative product placeholder that contains no actual information - highly highly likely
b) Apple have innovated so much that they have created a product that is also its own packaging so it doesn't need a box - highly highly unlikely

The new 2.66GHz MacBook Pro, black shuffle and 10.5.6 retail discs use the MC prefix so it's not a new development. Maybe they've run out of MB codes (there are soooooo many, I spend every Monday morning doing stock count on pages of MB coded items).

What if apple tell the shops the size of the box so that they know how many they can fit on one shelf/how much shelf space they need, but they don't bother telling people what's inside? In this case, this database has a space for internal dimensions that they don't know, so making a guess at the highest value is probably the safest bet (e.g. so they can definitely have enough space on display for unboxed and working models for demo)
E.G. You don't know how big the thing in the box is, but you know you definitely want to fit 3 on display. All you know is it can't be larger than the box (Well, it could, Apple can do amazing things and might even be able to bend the laws of physics), so if you guess that the item is the same size as the box then the space you clear for them will definitely be large enough.

It is interesting that it might be something. The UPC is a good guess if made up. Looking at items with prefix 885909 (which all seem Apple) the highest current one I could find is 0885909320257. The candidate is ...933 vs. ...932, so at least that seems somewhat credible.
I agree the 8.9 pounds and dimensions are not something portable, unless this is a monster 19" macbook superpro, or maybe an Apple blade (too light for an Xserve) for the North Carolina server farm :). But it did say MOBILE...
Then again my (the) first Macintosh Portable was 16 pounds!

Maybe this is retro.
Hard to separate placeholders from reality. Guess we'll know next week.
Fun rumor.

The box sizing is interesting, pre-unibody 15.4" MBP box comes at 17" by 17" by 3.25" thick.
this comes at 16.7 by 13 by 5.5
considerably thicker.
As for the weight of the box, it's 8.9lbs. Considering the weight of power adaptor, packaging and all that it seems highly likely.

Ok, so I took the dimensions and did some math with our beloved Pythagorean Theorem.
So we know the following of the current Al MacBook 2.4 GHz.
It has a Width of 12.78" a Length of 8.94"
Using the previously mentioned theorem of:
A^2 + B^2 = C^2
We get an approximate of the MacBook's diagonal dimension (screen area). Which is more or less ~15.5". However, since Apple trimmed that down to have the bezel and the iSight, the actual viewing screen is actually 13.1" a loss of ~2.4".
So now, lets turn our attention to this new product.
It has the dimensions of a box which are:
Length 16.7"
Height 13"
Width 5.5"
Applying the same math we get a possible diagonal length of ~21.16". Note: I chose to use Length and Height as this is a box, so we change the dimensions around. We don't know if these are the dimension of the brown box or the actual product box itself.
So whatever it is, it already has a diagonal of ~21.16". Still not so portable. But it could signal a new type of unibody MacBook Pro, as I can see a 15.2" MacBook Pro given these random dimensions.
I'm guessing the UPC and model numbers are correct, but that the actual dimensions are just fillers to throw people off. You know, like just made up just to fill in the lines of the inventory screen.

1) Rumors of Back to school from tomorrow
2) in 2007, Apple updated MBP a week before WWDC (along with BTS)
3) The box's sizing 16.7" by 13" by 5.5" weighing 8.9lbs
uMBP's Brown box sizing is 18 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 5 1/2. weighing 9.1lbs

Seems like place holder to me, hopefully. The measurements; the demensions and weight are a perfect match to the current white macbook's brown shipping box. The Alumimum units are slightly lighter in weight (about a 1/2 lb) same brown shipping box size.
Remember ladies and gents, retailers will keep some products in the brown shipping box incase of in stock room damage, that way you get a pretty white or black apple box.
MC is just what order they are in for model/product numbering. But MC240LL/A does suggest to me that it is very new product.

8.9 lbs. of utter *****.
Face it, there is nothing that will be released in one week. At least, nothing worth thinking about. Apple has that WWDC thing in another couple weeks. If something interesting gets released, it will be far latter than May 31st.
Most likely someone propped random info in a holder. Everything aside from the actual space made for another product is extraneous and random.

Possibly snow leopard discs?
The dimensions are of a square box, which rules out a retail box, so it has to be a box with plenty of smaller box's inside - weight is only 8.9lb so, snow leopard or software..

Apple hasn't jumped on the bandwagon yet like Adobe , with their practice of offering zero documentation in box? Seriously, the master collection is like $2500 and only comes with the dvd set, albeit a very heavy dvd set.
I want to doubt its software. But I don't know what type of hardware this would fit into.

I just hope it's the Mac Tablet + Dock or something.
3lbs. Tablet + power adopter + a nice dock for home computing/charging = 8.9lbs?
And the dock adds extra thickness to the box.... since it's a dock.
My iPhone's dock is surprisingly heavy for its size. I guess it was to balance out the iPhone's weight so it can make it stand at all times...
So that might be an explanation of the size+weight of this product...
But then... MC***** means it's not an all-new product.. so... wth?

Except for the "mobile" part... Anyway, something that weights almost 9 pounds is NOT mobile (the 17" MBP weights already 6.6 pounds).
The Mac mini weights 3 pounds, so this new device would be like 3 times the Mac mini. Now make it about 10" x 13" x 4", it fits in the given dimensions.
It could be:
- a home server (combination of Airport Extreme + Time Capsule + AppleTV, with 2x1TB HDDs + Superdrive)
- a mini Xserve (one LV nehalem Xeon, up to 3x4GB RAM, 2 HDDs + ODD)
- a new headless desktop (one C2Q "S" series, up to 2x4GB RAM, 2 HDDs + ODD)

I don't think this photo is supposed to be showing us a new Mac tablet...if the dimensions are infact true, at 8.9 pounds, this sounds more like the mini-tower everyone has been waiting for.
But then it wouldn't make sense putting it in the mobile computing category. I will check the MC240LL in the system and see if anything comes up at my local Best Buy. I won't be surprised if that entire photo was staged.
#2 I wouldn't trust any of the specs or information from Best Buy. BBY usually gets all the information regarding new products at the last minute. From what I've seen at my experience at BBY, they usually input the products into the system once they arrive in the store...so this information doesn't seem very credible to me.

Those dimensions and weight are for the unit in the box with all the accessories. I used to work at Best Buy and had to stare at that god forsaken screen everyday for 3 years. Best Buy did this with the Macbook Air as well however their dimensions were wrong from what I recall. This is most likely purely just speculation as I can't see Best Buy knowing anything about the new products being released from Apple yet.

"Inner pack quantity: 1"
correct me if im wrong but this ,means there is one box in each bigger box?
nvm this is from last year
That is also on the current one, but its impossible. Apple hasn't used square boxes since iMac G3 (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
EDIT: I'm an idiot for ever thinking its square, but it is a rather odd rectangle witch makes me think uber big keyboard or software inside (Green way of making boxes smaller)

Department = Product department not sales department (good example is that MP3 players are under the computer department but aren't sold by the computer sales team)
Class (Mobile Computing) = sub category of department, Mobile Computing could refer to a tablet, a laptop, a netbook, etc. It doesn't refer to an MP3 player or desktop as those are other classes under the Computer department.
Subclass (Apple) = The subcategory of the Class, for example: Apple, notebooks, netbooks are all subclasses under the Mobile Computing class.
It's listed under Apple as all Apple portables (notebooks) are since Apple has it's own subclass in each major class (Desktops, Monitors, MP3, etc).
The item is listed as retailing at $999.99 which means it's more than likely an update to the white macbook or possibly a new product at that price point. But the reality is that unless it's something as mundane as an update to an existing product it's unlikely that Best Buy would know about it ahead of time.
The box dimensions, weight, out of stock date could very likely all be wrong, but it is NOT a placeholder.

No event + No press invite = No tablet.
Apple wouldn't have a major release like a tablet as an "Oh, BTW..."
I'm betting that it's the unibody aluminum 13" Macbook Pro.
20% chance of built-in 3G.
25% chance M$ will film a Notebook Hunters commercial where an "ordinary" person goes into a computer store, picks up the Macbook Pro, starts licking it, says "ooh it tastes delicious, but I can't afford something so delicious."
100% chance that people will find some aspect of it to complain about no matter how good it is. (ie. "It's too unibody. I was hoping for something more omnibody, or at least multibody.")

White MB 2.13GHz vs. 2GHz, 160GB HDD vs. 120GB, 800MHz DDR2 vs. 667MHZ DDR2.
The CPU type didn't change just the clock speed. I have a feeling the old MB could use 800MHz DDR2 just fine (seems confirmed already over the last few months since the earlier upgrade) and now it is just official. Should be interesting to see the actual maximum RAM in the machine. I also believe previous models could actually use 6GB so I doubt it will go above that.

And we also now know a out-of-stock date for this new MacBook 11/01/09, which means we can expect an update by then.

13" MacBook "Pro" as rumored? Or maybe new white MacBooks?
What if it's the other way around, and they're releasing a 15" MacBook NON-Pro out of left field?
Could be a timely release of a competitively priced 15" in this post-meltdown economy.

If you google the code "MC240LL/A", you will find that it is associated with an Apple MacBook 13.3-Inch laptop. This may indicate that the Best Buy screenshot is a red herring.

A quick google search on "apple MC240LL/A" revealed that this is an existing part number for an existing MacBook model, which is consistent with the box dimensions and weight listed in the image.
No news here. Move on.
