How can I set osx to require a password when I want to use my mac after sleep mode?

Set your screen saver with a password and change the time to match the sleep time.

System Preferences -> Security. Go to the "General" tab and check off the first box.

You should also make sure you have disabled "automatic login" as well if you want this to be effective.
