Unlocking iPhone, will it erase data?

I'm in a foreign country right now and my buddy wants to have his phone unlocked for him which i can do for him. His only concern is if any data will be lost such as the items that are not backed-up like the notes.

He has either 2.1 or 2.2

You should upgrade the iPhone to 2.2.1 in iTunes and then download and run quickpwn to jailbreak/unlock.

This method will jailbreak/unlock the device without erasing anything.
