One MacRumors reader Carniphage posted (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=7681337&postcount=97) a photoshop rendition of what the next generation iPhone might look like using the leaked (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/05/27/next-generation-iphone-bezel-revealed/) bezel image.
The bezel appeared at parts supplier ChinaOnTrade (http://www.chinaontrade.com/iphone-4g-spare-parts-c-69.html) and shows the speaker for the iPhone at a much higher position than the current iPhone. It also shifts the color of the surrounding border from silver to black.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is sexy. Looks like you'd have to hold your iPhone lower on your face though, if true. Love the camera too, if true.
And thanks to whoever did the 'shop. (can you do a dark red one ;))

Speculating that chinese site is legit and these are official parts and the screen of a next generation is about the same size, resolution, specs, etc. ,
how do they justify that you have to flip the double amount of money out of your wallet ?

Then why not do away with the button too then? Apple could improve reliability and hardiness by killing the button. I've got dust around mine. How much stuff gets into the iPhone from that gap I wonder.
Also having the speaker slit that close to the edge isn't likely to be very stable from a mechanical standpoint. It weakens that whole edge, unless the new iphone is going unibody too...

Like... burgundy? lol
Sorry, "dark red" just sounds funny to me. I could see bright red for the phone, but not dark... unless you mean one of those translucent colors that's bright red and black where you can still see the red pop through.

What a revolutionary design change!
Apple has done it again!
I can't believe the new form factor, the new lines, the new fit and finish!
It is so different than the previous iPhone!
Apple sure isn't resting on their laurels!
And the iPhone's user interface! It was so modern in 2006 when it was developed! Who cares if it is now 2009?

One of the things I've always hated about the iphone (and the 2. gen touch) is the silver trimming - and I'm glad it looks like it will be gone cause I'm expecting to buy my first iphone when the new one is available...I actually don't care for the look of the iphone at all when I think about it, but some small changes might do the trick for me

You know what would be interesting for them to do in later designs would be to put the button on the back (i.e. where the black rubber-ish part is on the first generation iPhones) and then leave the entire front (they would somehow have to cover the speaker, but no worries about the ability to do that) as a screen. Of course, they'd probably have to put a bezel in order for fingers that would be holding the device to not interfere with normal functions, but it'd be a cool step forward.

Still not convinced this part is real. It's not like Apple to put a seam in the outside edge like that.
Oh and the stupid artist put the camera-shutter button on the wrong side.

Nice Photoshop work too :) I had not understood what iLounge meant about the earpiece before.
(EDIT: I'm sure there's another thread on this very question, but I've only read this one... how would the volume/mute controls fit into that bezel? It looks (in the original pic) like there's no room for them. And the round hole is odd. Some random iPhone knock-off instead?)

There is so much wrong with what you just said...
Remove WHAT button? There's only 2 buttons on the damn thing already! how could we do with any less?!
And the iPhone ALREADY IS UNIBODY geez people! It's machined out of a single piece of plastic. (if you meant 'aluminum' then clarify)
And the device is not 'mechanical' at all, there's no moving parts. Perhaps from a 'structural' standpoint but it's a phone, why would that matter at all!

It looks really nicee.... I think that the unibody design as one user mentioned might be a very accurate speculation.. I wouldn't be surprised if they did do something like that. There goes the hope of some people of there eventually being a removable battery tho. The speaker moved up a little bit, i am not really feeling that at all.. You gotta hold it lower, it also makes it look cheaply designed i think.. But i would take it if there was a camera which moved the speaker up.. As far as the colors the only other color besides black and white that i could see coming is silver and hats if they go with a different body to the iphone which is seaming more and more unlikely. :apple::apple:

I was hoping for more of a change. Maybe:
a. Thinner borders around the side (left, right, and top).
b. A wider (taller) 16:9 screen.
But the good news is that now Apple have a plastic bezel, we might see a complete white version of the iPhone.

1) The iPhone already is unibody!! if you mean Aluminum the say aluminum but aluminum =/= unibody
2) Apple never has and never will put a removable battery into its portable devices. The iPod has been around for like 8 years now, they're not gonna start with the removable battery now...

I just don't think that Apple would call that an upgrade in looks. I understand about the compromise with plastic for signal strength, but I so hope that the new iPhone would look better than the current one. This looks like a downgrade to me.
I would like to see what an artist could do in terms of bringing the design of the new iPhone in line with the new unibody laptop line.

I was just wondering the same thing- maybe they were able to make the unit shorter (but with same screen size.) So they move the speaker up a bit to also preserve the original distance between speaker and microphone at the bottom.
I don't recall any prior details about the piece, so don't know if that's possible or not.

the idea of a bezel and 'unibody' plastic back is silly.... its not one piece... the 2econd gen ipod touch could be considered unibody since the bezel and rear cover are the same piece.... now we also know if this is real that the new device is not unibody as we are discussing a single part that is not a unibody back cover/bezel part... thank you and have a nice day.:apple:
mattster16
May 28, 2009, 11:50 AM
This is what happens when a technical (somewhat) term is marketed. I'm talking about 'unibody' here. People who have no concept of what it actually means start throwing it around: "Maybe they will make the new iPhone a unibody!"
It is unibody already! How else would they make it? The new macbook still has a separate piece to cover the bottom face. It's not just a hollow block of aluminum. How would they get all the components inside? Unibody just means there isn't a separate structural frame being utilized.

Unibody means the frame is integrated into the body, not that the body consists of only one piece.
Think of an automobile there are two types: unibody and body-on-frame. A unibody vehicle still consists of multiple parts.

Well, my point is that a "rumor" is something that someone heard from some source that may or may not be true, but it is a representation of a fact that has some source. This is just a photoshop picture created by some guy based on no facts really that basically shows an iPhone 3G is a very minor case change. What's the point? Are we THAT desparate for anything related to the new iPhone?
Maybe I'll draw a stick figure of Steve Jobs holding a pencil drawing of what I think the new iPhone will look like complete with video cam, game controller, 10" screen, and 128 GB capacity. Then we can display THAT here.:)

May 28, 2009, 12:03 PM
This isn't going to be enough of a change. I am floored at how so many people here (but not all) drool over the most idiotic crap... Apple removes (possibly, still just a rumor, don't forget) the chrome bezel and moves the speaker closer to the top edge of the case, and these people fall all over themselves with glee:
That's freakin' amazing! Look what they did there... they moved a hole on the front of the device and changed the colored plastic a bit! Apple is staffed with magicians I tell you! Magicians! Or maybe Apple is staffed with God himself, for us mere mortals couldn't come up with something so insanely original!
Really? Are these people that enamored with Apple that they can keep on pushing the same tired design year after year, and these people will lap it up like dogs? Oh, yeah, wait... the first year the case was half aluminum and "thick," and the second year the case was plastic, came in white, and was "thin." Got it... huge freakin' change in design there. And the rumors now indicate that in this third year, the design will be the same (minus the chrome bezel and speaker placement)? Really? This is the best that the design team can come up with... the same crap?
Where's the slider? Where's the flip? Where's the actual freakin' keyboard? Bigger screen? Wider screen? Smaller phone (the Nano Phone or what-the-hell-ever)? Where's the choice (even by Apple's standards)? Imagine what it would be like for those of us that like Apple products if Apple made one desktop and/or one laptop? That's it! That's all you get!
Hogwash.
RIM continuously pushes out new phones with different designs... the Pearl, the Pearl Flip, the Bold, the Curve, the Storm... a selection. It's fine if you don't like RIM or want a BlackBerry, because the point I am making is that there is a selection available from RIM.
Palm is introducing the Pre. I have considered the Pre not much to write home about for so long, but as the Pre's release gets closer and closer, I am noticing more and more that the Pre is a heck of a device with some truly forward-thinking engineering. And guess what... Palm already has another device in the wings with a different design. Imagine that... again, you don't have to like Palm or want a Palm device, but they too support the argument that choice is good.
Heck, even the arch-enemy Microsoft supports numerous devices with many different design options with their mobile OS...
So what about Apple?

If the headset speaker is on the edge like that, I'm going to pass on this phone. The edge will dig into your ear. It's not even a natural position to have the edge of the phone at the hole in your ear.

A really nice photoshop effort!!!
As to going all black this is very imporatant as it should be far less reflective. Especially if rubberized. This would make it harder for irrate boyfriends or husbands to keep a bead on you.
As to the speaker location hopefully that is to address over all sound quality especially for people with big heads. On top of that I hope it is a lot louder.
Ultimately though I hope that the real reason for the new speaker placement is to make room for a larger screen. It doesn't have to be a lot to make the iPhone more usefull. Give me 10 in height and 80 in width and you will see a far more useful landscape mode. Or more pixels, the point is it would take much to improve the utility of the iPhone or the on screen keypad specifically. Just adding on pixel between each "key" ought to make for better keyboarding. An extra line of text in horizontal mode would hurt either though that could addressed in some apps by hiding the status line at the top.
One thing that is needed is a mechanical switch for the camera.

When I talk on my iPhone (it is a phone, after all) the glass face gets all smudged. The glass would have to constantly be cleaned if there was a camera behind there.
BTW, how come nobody has mentioned that the two camera resolutions Apple ordered a while back could be differentiating hardware factors for iPhone models, without significantly changing the manufacturing process (read distinct parts involved)? I know Apple isn't just stocking up on 5MP cameras without reason.

It looks like the iPhone is wider, it might just be the angle.
the pic is just the new bezel photoshopped onto an iPhone 3G, so yes, it is the angle

Well the camera would have a focal point much further away than the glass immediately in front of the camera. Fingerprints on the lenses of cameras don't affect the picture (assuming you're not a prof. photographer)

I'm by no means a greasy freak, but after I talk on my phone for a while the face of it gets seriously nasty. Though, I guess you could consider this a big usability issue for the screen too. I don't take pictures with my phone often, but when I do I have to the give the lens a quick wipe if I expect to not get a blurry shot.

Looking close at the Leaked Black Bezel Pics. (If real) I think Apple have removed the home buttom!! There only seems to be enought space for the glass to lay on top let alone a push-in button?
Might it have been replaced with a lighting-up electro static button? It would then match the top now the ear speaker is on the top edge. Giving a overall clean surface front.

I've got to side with whoever suggested the iPhone might be shorter. I can't think of a good reason to just move the ear-piece up 1cm (approx) and am thinking that as someone else said, they just moved the top edge down to be in line with the current ear-piece (that way the distance between the two is unchanged)... good call to whoever said that, interesting thought if nothing else.

Boy oh boy this pre-new-iPhone release info gets crazier and crazier. Why is this news?
Ya got me there, as I have the same question. I like iPhones, have owned two so far, and think they are really, really great. But, a black bezel is about as big a deal as Paris Hilton's toenail colors this week.
Where are the fun rumors, like: "The next iPhone will have 128G of storage, be usable as a disk, have USB 3.0, real printing capabilities, and complete voice control. Oh, and it will sport a quad-core G5 CPU. All due next Tuesday."
Now, that's a rumor. :D

With the speaker moving up, does anyone think the screen size might just be a little bit bigger, and thus the design change?
Dude.. I was just wondering the samething.. I was like why would they assume that the screen size would stay the same if the earpiece move up.. Im thinking we should expect a bigger screen as well..

Nice, simple rendition...
But I really don't think that resting my ear right on the edge like that would Be very comfortable. As it is now, you really couldn't pick a better spot.
Nice mockup though!
If the headset speaker is on the edge like that, I'm going to pass on this phone. The edge will dig into your ear. It's not even a natural position to have the edge of the phone at the hole in your ear.
This is going to suck ass if true.
The edge is on your ear already--just a centimeter away from where it would be if this new bezel is real. (And how the edge actually lands varies a lot with how you hold it at the moment.)
The only way to stop your ear from resting on the edge of the current phone would be to hold the phone so high you couldn't hear it :p Try it :)

Are you serious? A flip iPhone? Oh yeah, that would be awesome...
This is the way that apple does things, if you don't like the iPhone then don't buy it. There's only one macbook design, but you can get dozens of varieties of dells and HPs. Does that make Dell or HP better than apple?
The iPhone packs as much as possible into a sleek package. A slider or keyboard would bulk up the phone, if you want a real keyboard then get a different phone.
Apple tries to do one thing and do it right. And whether they accomplish that is up to you. I actually don't know why I'm typing such a long response to you, given the ridiculous nature of your post, work must really be boring me...

I totally agree. Apple doesn't have to come up with a revolutionary new design every year, they slowly evolve it. The iPhone has a design that has proven it works. People are used to it, it just looks like an iPhone. So there's no need to come up with a radical new design now. It's ok to adjust the design here and there but keep the basic formfactor and looks how it is - because it works. Apple might come up with a very different iPhone design at some time, just as the iMac got a radical new design from time to time, but please not every single year.

I don't think this is right. See how the metal is solid at the bottom of the first pic of the bare bezel? There is no room for the home button assembly in this area. And see how the bezel jogs to a lower level around that solid area? This indicates that a separate piece (plastic?) would be laid here.
I actually think that the pic of the bare bezel is upside down. The 'loop' that the photoshopper thinks is the earpiece may actually be the frame around the dock connector.

There has to be a reason the speaker was moved. Plain and simple, they wouldn't do it for nothing. I could care less if there was a camera on there...if there is, there better still be one on the back too. But they must have moved it for some reason. Maybe bigger batter? To fit the extra memory in it?

Well, my 2 cents, if they put the ear piece that high, I would assume one of two things:
First they put the earpiece that high because they are going to make the touch screen a little bigger. This maybe also because of a higher resolution camera thus a higher resolution touchscreen.
or
Second, they are going to put a camera on front, iSight, which would be awesome.
Either of the two, for me would be awesome. But, we'll see in about a week and a half!!!:D

I agree with you. Look at the second pic. See the curved out spot on the lower right? Would this not simply be the spot for the on/off rocker? Also, on the "bottom", it looks like a couple of spots for sensors. I don't know, I think this might have been misinterpreted.

I like the idea of a touch sensitive home button as I think it would be great to have everything on the front touch sensitive - with the only physical buttons being on the sides / top.
Perhaps the iPhone will be shorter or have a bigger screen - if all current apps are developed for the current ratio of 320x480, perhaps they would have a black border around them on a bigger screen? Therefore developers who have made their apps for the old screen size won't lose out and new apps can be developed for the new screen size. Just a thought...

The 'home' button.
Yes, I meant aluminum. The new MB and MBP aren't unibody plastic are they? Is it 'machined' out of plastic or just molded and then outfitted with a chrome ring?
The button IS mechanical. You push the button and it activates a contact switch. If they replaced the 'mechanical' bits with something on the multitouch interface it would improve reliability, would it not?
Come on dude. How much better could I have said it to avoid you slamming my post? I did post in english, right?

Why waste battery power to have the Apple icon on the back glow? Is there such a surplus of battery life that they can blow some on such frivolity?
I'd think it rather pointless to incorporate that into a new phone, especially when it looks like the new Zune HD could really be successful in taking customers away. I'm sure that a glowing Apple on the back is going to keep defectors...
Not that I'm a fan of Microsoft but they do eventually get it and come up with a good product. Eventually. Well, then they blow it like they did with Vista. Gartner told people that haven't got Vista to ignore it... OUCH! That's got to hurt... :D:D:D:apple:!

nice mockups... I would like to point out though that the current bezel part is black as well. So concluding that the visible outer silver bezel will be black is somewhat random.
What people don't seem to realize is that this bezel part is not visible, since it is enclosed by the back shell of the iphone.

With the speaker moving up, does anyone think the screen size might just be a little bit bigger, and thus the design change?
Good point, and something I have been hoping for all along. Hopefully the screen will be larger, run the entire face of the device, and the 'Home' button problem (problem being that something still needs to act as one) being a 'clickable' bottom half of the screen just like the trackpad on the unibody Macbooks and Macbook Pros. And man, I am relatively sure it will be, but I too am hoping for an OLED screen and a significant bump up in the resolution. Especially after Microsoft's Zune HD announcement, too. And while I am dreaming here, I might as well point out that I sent Apple a request for them to put an Infrared port on the top of the new iPhone, so then someone (like Logitech) can make a true 'remote control' App, but I doubt this will be applied. It would be pretty awesome, though, huh?

What people don't seem to realize is that this bezel part is not visible, since it is enclosed by the back shell of the iphone.
Hi Quickdraw,
I looked at teardown of a 3G phone - and there is an inner-bezel - but it does not have curved sides like this supposed leaked component.
That said, there's a few things about the "leaked image" that don't make sense.
But to make you happy here's a render of a "Shortphone" with a silver bezel.

I posted this on the bezel discussion, too, however, I think it's fair to give people the opportunity to catch it here, in case they aren't following that thread.
I find it odd that the new bezel assumptions don't add up with the icons that were found the other day. In those icons, the earpiece is in the standard location of the current model phone. Now, I don't think this is inconsistency on Apple's part. I'd expect that the notch at the top isn't replacing the earpiece, but instead is a repositioning of the loudspeaker for speakerphone and watching videos. The downward-facing speaker kinda sucks, especially in areas with an above-average ambient noise level. Opinions?
Oh, and they could technically keep the downward facing speaker, also, and use the two speakers to broadcast stereo sound when the phone is in a horizontal orientation.

why is the bezel at the bottom incomplete? so if we are to complete it, there would be another smaller bezel to attach with it? or will the case originally bas the bottom part so that we can detach or reattach?
heres to compare

after seeing the high res pictures I take it back, that's clearly not the dock connector. in the low res photos it looked like it could have been the dock connector housing.

From looking at the leaked bezel, I've wondered why exactly it seems to "end" towards the bottom. It's extremely unlikely that Apple would have a seam in their bezel so it leads me to believe they've got something else planned. Going on Stezza's mockup (I love the Apple used as the flash), I just colored in the bottom part in about 30 seconds to show my idea.

I'm thinking an iMac-like look. And I apologize for the absolutely atrocious image, I just wanted the idea out there, I'll let someone else take care of the clean up. I still think this is possible, and I posted a mockup a long time ago that incorporated the unibody look.

Are you serious? A flip iPhone? Oh yeah, that would be awesome...

Apple tries to do one thing and do it right. And whether they accomplish that is up to you. I actually don't know why I'm typing such a long response to you, given the ridiculous nature of your post, work must really be boring me...
Your at work, and checking out Macrumors. Ah, gotta love work, huh?

I have A LOT of down time at work. I tend to get things done earlier, so I have some spare time to check on the :apple:. I would be pretty bored without this site. And no, I didn't think your post was an insult.

OK, so maybe I'm just not seeing it, but where is it incomplete? I see a continuous ring of chrome just like is on the iPhone. There's some glare, but even so I have a hard time understanding why people think it ends anywhere?
