I think that my post count is wrong
If you posted to a thread that was moved to the Wasteland or deleted, those posts will be removed from your total. Individual posts deleted by moderators are also excluded from your post count.
Posts made to the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum, the Console Games forum, the Code Sharing forum, and the Marketplace forum are not counted.
If your post count reaches a total that entitles you to a new forum privilege, such as uploading and avatar or using the Marketplace forum, the new privilege may not take effect immediately. It will work by the following day at the latest.

Thanks for pointing that out. Unfortunately that wasn't in his post when I posted... Or maybe my eyes did not see it. I just woke up :D

After reporting probably 30 posts in the picture gallery forum the other day, I wish that one didn't count toward total post count either.

What do you mean?
I don't think post counts should apply in the "post your desktop" or "post your setup". Those lead to useless chattter that looks more like an IM.

I agree, add the Picture Gallery to the list of non counted areas!

That's exactly what I mean, jessica. The setup threads and the monthly desktop threads are huge spam holes.

No they don't. I don't see any text speak in there. Or posts where someone quotes someone and puts lol under it without it getting deleted.

If I recall, there was an exchange in one of the threads (I think the monthly desktop thread) that was nearly two pages of back and forth between two forum members and that's it. I believe that is what jessica. means. Long before that point, it should be taken to PMs or IMs.

Read from post 982 to 985. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=7669574&postcount=982) .
Read from post 1026 to 1028 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=7680221&postcount=1026) this is the beginning (that was helpful) but for a couple of posts under it there is useless chatter
The thread has since been cleaned a bit, but we had a cute german exchange, a member who posted a picture of Obama, someone who commented on said picture, and then someone who said "take it to PRSI", which didn't really seem to be necessary (nor did the comment about Obama's picture on a desktop). The thread is mildly clean but the setup thread, the desktop thread, the POD thread ... all often threads where chatter continues. Now I have no room to speak because my draw to the attention of someone's verbiage used when posting their setup apparently caused a huge uproar and users were very very upset with me (so I'm told) but, photo threads should be handled just like photo.net. You cannot post text only, it's actually impossible (or was years ago). It's a image-only thread.
If you have a question use the PM system ... I guess. Who am I to judge? ;)

Actually, I think that using the "report post" button does increase your post count (since doing so creates a new thread/post in the moderator area).
Unless the post count increment has been disabled there.

i think this is one of things which i don't like about this forum, however, i can't see a solution for it.
I don't think people should post replies just to gain few points. I think it should be for the spirit of wanting to help other people. However, i can see the necessity of it! as people may not help as much if you take it out.

Some forums I've seen use Karma points or Reputation points (all the same thing really), when people vote on the "usefulness" of posts. In reality though, this system breaks down because forum buddies just end up voting for each other, diluting the true intent behind the system.
I'm all for the post count here being hidden (or at least obscured). Post count restrictions lead the majority of junior members into meaningful interaction with the forum and develops great community spirit (even though it can be inflated by random "+1" and "QTF" posts, in my exerience, these kinds of members are the minority).

Actually creating a report post, flags the post in AdminCP/ModCP and messages the relevant Mods; it does not create any threads.
An example email (if that's enabled), the admins/mods would get:

From what I remember being told a post report creates a thread in the Mods Area. IIRC, of course...

Actually it creates a thread which goes to a separate forum, this means we can all see and track the thread reports and discuss them in the thread that was created.
We do get emails about them but I have a mail rule which sends them straight to trash :D

Probably best. IMO, it's pretty useless to get a reported post email when you're not online - one of the other mods who is on line will usually pick it up.
I see, my forum must be set up different; I'd rather it created a thread.
Probably software dependent. vBulletin's normal reported post method is to have a "reported posts" section that only the moderators have access to.
Come to think of it, why have normal users got read access to the Wasteland section - it's only full of junk (as far as I can see).

I like the wasteland area. It allows me to read over all my posts.

It is used as another moderating tool, it allows us to show the user that the thread was against the rules or a very problematic thread. If they weren't allowed to see it then there is little point in having a wasteland as it would be the same as thread deletion.

Seems reasonable, so I guess that spam and gratuitous porn/violence/whatever that isn't fit for public viewing is deleted...

Nah we move that to the mods forum :D
Not every rubbish thread is moved to the wasteland. It is used more by some mods than others, I tend to use it sparingly.
Abstract

I don't mind posts in the Pictures forum counting towards a member's total post count. Why shouldn't it? Either we only count posts in the Mac related sections, or we should keep post count open to all forums.
Some people post in Community because this place isn't just about Macs, and some kind of general banter with other members about rather random topics is important for them. Some people who post in the Digital Photography forum mainly go there to post their own photos, and to look at other people's photos. Some people post a lot in the Pictures forum, because they want to see what other people have bought, or other people's desktops. People who like keeping up with current events will post in Current Events.
It's all general, non-Mac related banter, whether it's Current Events, Digital Photography, Console Games, PRSI, Music, Pictures, or anything not related to Macs. I don't see why some forums are treated differently from others in terms of post count. It almost seems like some are less respected and treated as spam, while others are OK because the "type" of banter has been approved.

I tend to agree with you
After a person satisfies the counts for the Marketplace/PRSI/Avatar, then what does post count matter anyway?
