Do you turn it off?
Is there a hibernate?
Do you just close the lid and send it to sleep?

I just sleep it, unless it is going to be off for a few days, then I shut it down.

I do the same thing. I just close the lid and let it sleep unless I know I won't be using it for a while.
When I go to shut down my MacBook Pro, I press the power button and then click Shut Down.

Hmm... I often just shut it down, since it resets the ram right? :3

Same.
If I want to turn it off, I use: Tap the Power Button then Enter.

There's no hibernate, which I miss from my Windows days. I wish there was.
Most of the time I sleep my laptop. But when I want to reset the RAM (or getting up about 1 GB of swap after using a VM for a while), I reset the computer. Power button > enter.

If I want to turn it off, I do it the hard way.
Apple Menu>Shutdown (whilst holding option key)

All current Mac laptops automatically hibernate when going to sleep. Try putting the laptop to sleep, waiting for the sleep light to pulse and then remove the battery. When you power it up again it will resume from the hibernation file (grey screen with loading bar)

Having just tried this, I found that it just shut off my computer...

I miss being able to change the battery in my old powerbook while it was sleeping. My MBP just dies straight away:(

I was questioning that when I read it. Thanks for trying!
The computers do hibernate when they run out of battery however. That is when you will see the greyed out screen and loading bars when coming back up.

I usually just leave it on if it's on my desk. I sleep it when I take it to college/elsewhere.

I usually just close the lid and put it to sleep. If I won't be needing to use it for over 24hrs I shut it down but via the hard way (Apple Menu -> Shutdown -> Ok). Never tried the physical power-button -> Enter key. Should be much faster then, learn something new everyday thanks!

How much battery drain, if any, is there in sleep mode?

When I step away from it a short time or a little longer, I do just as many of you and just put it to sleep. But overnight, I'll shut it down.

During my 15-20 minute transport to work, I lose about 3-4% of the battery power.
I left it in sleep while I was gone for about 3 days and it lost about 75% of the power.

That sounds rather high. My Late 2006 MB loses less than 1% per hour when asleep on battery.

You can hibernate. Just remove the battery when it's on, then put it back in :p

Removing your battery to hibernate? That's insane!
Look for a dashboard widget called "Deep Sleep". One click and your macbook is hibernating. Or for the lazier ones among you, here is the link....

Apparently re-inserting the battery when it's on puts it in hibernate.

Then you did it wrong. You probably didn't wait until the light started pulsating.

I just shut the lid 99% of the time. Once every two weeks or so, I'll shut it down completely Apple>Shut Down over night. I don't always remember though :p

Ditto. Leaving it plugged in sleeping over night isn't good for battery I think. 95% trickle charges to 100% over and over and that reduces battery life.
At end of day I power down and then remove the mag-plug. If I'm using it through out the day, I just close the lid. Once ever two weeks I run on battery power to run it down. Do the same with my cell phones and everything else with rechargeables and have great battery life.
I've done this on my Windows lap tops and I've got batteries that last like new that are 2 years old. Wife leaves her laptop plugged in all the time sleeping and her batteries last about 30 min.

I was going to suggest the same widget. Works like a charm. You don't have to use it every time. You just set what kind of sleep mode you'd like to use when you put your MacBook to sleep. I've set mine to hibernate. Works like a charm. At night, though, I always shut mine down.
