I have read in a few places that using your own iPhone to test with doesn't always go to plan.

What is the general experience out there, and should I get an iPod Touch to do the testing with? Is an iPod Touch close enough to the iPhone to do this type of test? My apps are not iPhone-feature dependent.

AFAIK, issues only arise when it comes to testing against the 3.0 beta firmware, as you cannot downgrade afterwards. Otherwise I'm not aware of any problems.

Clearly, I love my iPhone and don't want to see it hurt.

I did read a few blogs where people said it screwed their iPhone up and needed a complete reset. Sounded scary.

I have had to do a complete reset a couple times with an iPod touch. In theory you should be fine, in practice if you don't want to deal with potentially losing stuff on a reset it's not the best idea.
