One of the new features of the SDK 3.0 will be the handling of external devices.

Does that mean that I can develop an application on my Mac that will work side by side with my application on the iPhone?

You can already do that with 2.0 via WiFi. You'll have to clarify the question somewhat. I believe the device support is for extra third-party devices and that you need to talk to Apple directly to build in special chips into the device to allow it to communicate via the Dock connector.

What I want to do is to make an application on my iPhone to recognize an application on my Mac. Both applications will be made by me. My purpose is to transfer files between the two of them. Of course, all files that will be transfered will reside in my iPhone application's documents directory.

Is there any way to do that using Bluetooth or the 30 pin dock connector? And how can I do this via WiFi (like you said)? Can you give me some clues?

I have no idea: I've never done it, but there are plenty of apps that do...
