Did you TRY these methods? Do they actually work for mere mortals, or only for shirt-folding professionals?

Works like a charm! Only took about 3 practice tries before I had the move perfected.

Got it in one. Now that's one hell of an easy way to fold shirts! - The first one that is, the second one is how I'd normally do it :)

The first one of necessity must be superior, because it is in quicktime as opposed to windows media format.

Is this one of those things they teach you on your first day at the Gap?

My wife always makes fun of how I fold shirts. I'm going to have to go practice…

My preferred method is to drape :D

I coudln't view the first one for some reason. The second one I saw LOL...

I got the first method to work. I see my problem - I wasn't picking up the shirt in the right place. I thought the line she shows was at an angle but it's actually straight.

The only trouble with this method compared to the standard face-down, sleeve-over, sleeve-over, bottom-up, flip-over method is that you end up with one sleeve behind the folded shirt rather than tucked inside. But the time-saving tip is appreciated nevertheless. :)

Oddly, the method shown in the second video is actually slower than the old standard method! ;)

With a few quick hand movements a shirt is perfectly folded. But see if you can get this link to work: LINK (http://homepage.mac.com/mcdurkee/folding.mov).

PS My husband just did it *almost* perfectly on the first try

If your shirt has a logo, you gotta start with the logo side facing up so that it ends up right.

My initial problem was grabbing the t-shirt too close to the sleeve seam, causing the neck to end up off-center.

And remember: When you finish folding, you need to pick the shirt up from the top (shoulders) not the bottom, or it will unfold very quickly.

I view the movies in QuickTime. The only way that I know of saving them is if you pay the $29.95 QuickTime Pro fee. Then when you click on the last icon at the bottom then you are given the option to download a movie to the desktop.

My mother taught me the technique that you mentioned Doctor Q. I think it looks pretty nice. Will need to practice on the new method. ;)

I thought there was a nifty way of saving quicktime movies in safari...

I could definitely be wrong though.

But, yeah, that is awesome. I thinnk I'll take off my tshirt and try it. :)

yeah, QT Pro is the only way to save them, but why do that when you can just download them! :D

in Safari, open Activity (Cmd+Opt+A) then click the arrow for the site so it rolls down the menu and you can see the individual items. then just Option+Click (might be double click) on whatever you want to download. :D

you've got to be fast with that second link, because it re-directs, but it's all good!! :D

i'm going to have to try that method as well...

Actually, this tip didn't work for me. I tried option-clicking the file in the activity window....did nothing. Tried double clicking...reloaded the movie. Tried control clicking...again, nothing.

Can someone help me out here?

Maybe you could just save the link, instead of downloading it...it probably won't disappear anytime soon although I can't be 100% sure of that.

I just had a try (I'm only talking about the first method - the second one I use for backpacking :) ).
It is easy and quick - I am impressed.
Also it turns out in the format you want - I was not very lucky before.

For longsleeve shirts it's not working as well though.

(mutters to self - outloud - Oh, for the love of Jeff, source code, people. Source code whenever the activity window trick fails.)

This is the direct link: http://uptown.jengajam.com/tshirt-folding.mpeg
Open it in a new window, let it load completely, go to Save Page As, and save from the resulting pop-up window. That's it...no Quicktime Pro involved. http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif

BTW: Excellent first technique. I didn't bother to go through the 2nd one.

Here is my version, as words and a single graphic, rather than with a video.

1. Lay the shirt on a table, face up in front of you, with the collar to the right, as shown in the diagram.

2. Select point A, somewhere between the collar and the shoulder.

3. Visualize line A-B-C, perpendicular to the bottom of the shirt, with B halfway between A and C.

4. Grab the shirt (both layers) with your left hand at point B. Don't let go until step 12.

5. Grab the shirt (both layers) with your right hand at point A. Don't let go until step 12.

6. Move your right hand over your left hand and grab the shirt (both layers) at point C.

7. Lift the shirt off the table.

8. Move your left hand toward you and to the left, out from under your right hand and the shirt.

9. Move your right hand to the right, so the shirt is hanging in front of you.

10. Lay the shirt down on the table, towards you, i.e., face down.

11. Fold the shirt in half, moving the side nearest you over the side away from you.

12. Let go!

Good Job, Dr. Q! Now, if one reads your istructions and watches the video they should get it. One questionI had while watching the video was if she was grabbing the top layer or if she was grabbing both. I found when I tried it that she was grabbing both :D

the 2nd link is just a waste of download time, but that first one....i'm gonna pull that one on the girlfriend next time we go and do the laundry! hahaha

thanks wdlove

totally different way of "folding" here on these fourms eh?

Doctor Q
May 9, 2004, 08:22 PM
I volunteered to fold the laundry today. I don't mind helping with chores routinely, but this time I really wanted to be in charge of the folding!

Hmmm... Why does the Tom Sawyer story about "whitewashing the fence" suddenly come to mind?

I gave a lesson to some kids today at a Mother's Day gathering. The 11-year-old picked up the technique after a few tries. The 8-year-old couldn't quite do it. She didn't grab at the center point, she grabbed the material too timidly and it slipped out of her grip, or she laid the shirt back down face-up instead of face-down. I told her to keep practicing.

Neat, you could have a whole 'production' line of people doing that ;)

And a nice thread to resurrect.
