I am very new to programming and am simply trying to create a "hello world" application i am following the tutorial Programming "Mac OS X with Cocoa for beginners" on wikipedia

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Programming_Mac_OS_X_with_Cocoa_for_beginners/Getting_around_in_Xcode_and_Interface_Builder

i am told that when i open interface builder i should "see a palette called Cocoa-Controls" - but i dont.

can anyone tell me why?

This is because the tutorial is using an older version of XCode and IB.

The window you are looking for is now called "Library" and should open automatically when IB is opened.
