I see the question has already been answered, but just to add my "yes" as confirmation.

I am in between credit cards at the moment, having not received my (2nd) replacement yet.

Not knowing what to do, since I buy apps every day and the App Store demands you have it even for updates and free apps, I went out to a check cashing store and got a Visa Gift card. When filling the form, the name doesn't matter. It's the expiration and the 3-number PIN in the back which does.

^^^ you can download free apps without a credit card. i did it yesterday. on the accounts screen when you pick visa, mastercard...etc theres a "none" option. works great. i dont know about updates though
