Seagate 500GB HDD for umbp, ST9500420ASG or ST9500420AS?

I was making this same decision last night. I ended up going with the one without G. After searching the internet for information for a half hour, it seems that most people say it is not needed because of, or will confilict with, the sudden motion sensor. Plus, it was a bit cheaper, $126.99 shipped.
Seagate 7200.4 isn't worth the money in my opinion.
WD Scorpio Blue is faster, cheaper, uses less power and makes less noise.

Neither -- they both suck. The 7200 rpm one gives almost no advantage over the 5400 one, and they're both slower than WD Scorpio Blue 5400 rpm.
Get the WD Scorpio Blue if you want performance, or Hitachi TravelStar 5K500.B if you want a quiet drive that's easy on the battery. The TravelStar is the stock drive on the new MBPs with 500 GB/5400 RPM.
Techreport published their review with real world testing on the 4th of June. Before that everyone was relying on synthetic benchmark results. Seagate 7200.4 shines in synthetic benchmarks, but falls short in real world testing.
But keep in mind speed differences between WD5000BEVT and Seagate 7200.4 will not be noticed without using a stopwatch or benchmark software.
It doesn't suck as in "worst piece of crap in the history of the universe". The difference between the 500 GB 2.5" S-ATA drives on the market is fairly small. But benchmarks test do show that the Seagate drives are in the bottom half, so...
it works fine on my unibody mbp. no extra vibrations, heat, or sounds when using it with OSX but i can hear some clicking sounds when its on boot camp running Windows Vista. i've had it for 3 months. i havent ran any tests on it but large programs like photoshop open a little faster than the stock 5400rpm 250gb hd.
Not everyone; I always recommended other drives instead.
Seriously though, it doesn't suck, but new information has come to light that shows that it is not the fastest drive, and definitely doesn't have the best bang for the buck.
It's not that I am not happy with the purchase. It's just that I didn't notice the big or huge difference in speed, that people were mentioning.
(And by the way, I haven't noticed any vibrations/sounds or heat increase with it)

Run HDTune pro 3.5 in Bootcamp, your firmware should be firmware 0002SDM1

by the way, i bought the Scorpio Black with the G sensor, and i dont think its conflicting with macbook pro's sensor?
i mean, whats the use if the sensor is on the laptop, the drive will be faster than the laptop to tell itself "park the heads"
also i imagine if the drive itself has the sudden motion sensor then when you drop for example the drive in external enclosure SMS works too?

Or, if you choose not to inflict windows upon your computer
, just use System Profiler (About this Mac, More Info, Serial-ATA)...That will show you the firmware revision.
