True to rumors, Apple today announced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/06/08iphone.html) that the new iPhone 3G S (http://www.apple.com/iphone/) will launch on June 19th in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. Launches in additional countries will one week later in an additional six countries, with many more launches around the world coming over the next few months.
Appearing almost identical to the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3G S will be available in both black and white and be priced at $199 for 16 GB models and $299 for 32 GB models for new and qualifying AT&T customers in the United States. Apple will also continue to offer the 8 GB iPhone 3G, priced at $99 for qualified AT&T customers.Apple today introduced the new iPhone 3G S, the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including improved speed and performance -- up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G -- with longer battery life, a high-quality 3 megapixel autofocus camera, easy to use video recording and hands free voice control. iPhone 3G S includes the new iPhone OS 3.0, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system with over 100 new features such as Cut, Copy and Paste, MMS, Spotlight Search, landscape keyboard and more. The iPhone 3G S contains many of the features that had been rumored including Digital Compass, Video Recording, Voice Control, 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and faster internet speeds.
The big remaining issue is how pricing for existing iPhone 3G owners will be. The prices listed above represent subsidized pricing which existing iPhone 3G owners don't appear to qualify for. When the iPhone 3G was released, AT&T did allow previous iPhone owners to buy-in at the subsidized price, but the circumstances were different as the original iPhone had never been subsidized.
Existing iPhone 3G owners will have to pay approximately $200 over subsidized pricing to upgrade:

Note that none of the pictures prominently display AT&T next to the 3G logo in the pictures. Steve Jobs, like in the old days, is looking for a better deal.

white one looks extra sleek.
The iPhone 3G S contains many of the features that had been rumored including Digital Compass, Video Recording, Voice Control, 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and faster internet speeds.
When was voice control rumored?!?!?!? Must have missed that, but I don't recall it...
Btw, It's kinda lame that they are not offering the 16gb iphone 3g SOLELY for the purpose of outstocking the 8gb that a lot of devices of it are on apples hands and they won't to sell it away...

Of course they are. On a live stream of the conference every time Scott said "AT&T support coming later" the crowd went insane. AT&T is the one weak link, they just refuse to get their stuff together. Late summer for MMS? No support for tethering? Why wouldn't they look elsewhere? Ridiculous.

I'll be buying a 32GB iPhone 3GS sometime after the launch mayhem calms down. Can't wait.

I'm definitely getting the 16GB white iPhone for my birthday present this year. It's time to upgrade from my 1st Gen, and I still use my iPod nano so I don't need a 32GB phone. This is what the iPhone 3G should have been, btw. But I am happy to be getting it now. <3
ETA: I still have my upgrade from last year's 3G lanch, does that mean I can still pay the cheaper 3GS price and not the lame early upgrade price.

That is a beautiful piece of technology. I skipped the 3G, so I'm over-due for an upgrade. 32GB Black, please. June 19 can't get here soon enough!!
Hopefully AT&T can be shamed into catching up with the rest of the world re: MMS and tethering - SOON.

I talked to AT&T, I was told I could do a secure upgrade and have to wait 3 days to get the phone (pay the 299 plus 18 fee) or wait until 7/12 at which time I can get the 299+18 and just sign a new 2 year deal.

what is the upgrade price for owners of the 2G iPhone?
I would say this is more important because that are the people most likely to upgrade. If I had a 3G i would definately not upgrade for just a video camera.

Two changes we did NOT see that I'm glad of:
* iPhone case still glossy: I really like the current look, slippery or not :) And it has been highly durable and scratch-proof for me (unlike the chrome). You can always add a rubber skin for grip--which is the one flaw in the glossy back--but I keep one finger under the phone by habit, and have never dropped it.
* No front camera. Good! It would be too cool, but I want it in 2010. (Just keep adding letters: iPhone 3GSN?) 2010 is when I'm ready to upgrade my iPhone... I didn't want to be tempted this year ;) (But the macro close-up camera with VGA video almost tempts me anyway. Almost. And the voice-dial-and-music-control on one button... Almost! And the new battery... and the speed for GAMES... oh, dear.)

I have an iPhone 3g, and would have to pay $499 for a 32gb iphone 3gS. My parents both have original iPhones, and are on a family plan...
Can my mother upgrade to a 3gS for $299, then swap phones with me? As long as we switch our sim cards, it would work, correct?

It better go down significantly! Most I'd want to pay for the 32GB model is £400. That's if it is available straight away - when the iPhone 3G was first introduced it wasn't available.

What I do like:
1. Snow Leopard upgrade for existing Leopard users just for $29
2. Getting rid off MacBooks – good idea
3. Finally TomTom is in
4. Stupid name for new iPhone…will create more confusion.
5. “Find My iPhone” feature
6. Generally new approach to games and apps from developers perspective.
What I do not like:
1. Where is Steve Jobs?
2. BS about new eco screen with arsenic-free glass for iPhone…where is OLED?
3. No iChat AV with front camera
4. Improved performance, Built-in video camera with editing, Voice Control, Compass and 32 GB storage is not worth’ish an upgrade. Myself waiting another 12 months.
5. AT&T blocking Tethering and MMS for now…its just lol, however I do not care because I live in UK;)
6. Having say that why O2 don’t say anything yet on their website?

I'd be happy waiting a month until I can get the subsity. The fact that I'd have to pay $399 in the interim though is insane. I'll be waiting until I've hit the one year mark.

Jun 8, 2009, 03:23 PM
It looks like it costs 175 - ((# of month you had your phone) * 5) + 36 to cancel the current contract and pay a new activation fee. This is less than the 200 + 18 they want to "upgrade" 16GB 3G to 32GB 3GS.
The question is how much is your current number worth to you, I guess.
I wonder what happens after 1 year, since mine is up in late July.

Wow! How generous of AT&T. Existing iPhone owners are treated to a $200 surcharge to extend their contracts another year, and AT&T's logo was nowhere to be found on the list of carriers supporting tethering. Of course, AT&T will come in with late tethering support... for an additional $40 per month.
When exactly did Gordon Gekko replace Randall Stephenson on AT&T's board, anyway?

I've tried several times to pre-order an iPhone 3GS. I am an original iPhone 2G customer (never upgraded to 3G) and I am eligible for upgrade pricing from AT&T. When I type my info (SS#, phone #, etc.) on Apple's iPhone upgrade page, it tells me the price ($299 for 32GB version), but when I go through to the final page, it tells me the following:
AT&T was unable to set up your account online. To reserve your new iPhone, click the Continue button to find the nearest Apple Retail Store so we can help you in person. When you stop in, a Specialist will be ready to help you complete your account setup, personalize your new iPhone and get it ready to make calls, browse the web, receive email, and more.*
Is anyone else getting this when attempting to pre-order the new iPhone?

Apple really let me down today. Yeah, the new iPhone 3GS is faster and can record video, but c'mon, those aren't good selling points. Phones have been recording video for years now, and Apple is advertising this "new" feature as if they are the first to put video recording capabilities into a phone. If they really wanted to blow us out of the water, and steal the hype from the Pre, they should have made physical modifications to the phone to separate it more from the iPhone 3G. On the news tonight, when they come to the story about Apples new phone, no one is going to be excited when they hear "faster". The original 3G was the "faster" iPhone model, and this is going to appear to be nothing new to current iPhone users. Also, what's the point of releasing 3.0 on the 17th? Once again, if they really wanted to blow us away today, it should have been released today. Perhaps that just me being bitter because I am leaving for the summer and won't be able to get the update before I go, but when it comes down to it, Apple really hyped us up for nothing. iPhone 3GS is going to sell just as well as the other iPhones, no doubt, but coming from someone like me who still sometimes regrets leaving Verizon to get a 3G would have liked to see something bigger this time around. If the GM version of 3.0 is being seeded to developers today, it should be released to all of us today. Apple is so worried about our excitement and anticipation that they forget about the let down factor. 3.0 is clearly done, and releasing it on the 17th makes no sense to me. ATT, a leading mobile phone company should have MMS available, and tethering for that matter, ASAP. That was very surprising to me when I heard that.
Apple needs to stop jumping into new products and leaving defective products in the dust. Why does my iPhone 3G constantly freeze up? Why is restarting my phone a daily recurrence? It would be nice to see these issues addressed instead of more laptop releases three months after new ones are announced. Apple doesn't have its priorities in order, whatsoever.

I can wait... no big deal.
Really not too impressed but then again never had my hopes too high.
What I am really curious about is the way video recording will work.

At any rate , waiting will show what is inside the device after someone dismantles it!lol

16GB Black ordered. I'm upgrading from a 8GB original iPhone. I was tempted to go with the 32GB, worrying primarily about how big any turn-by-turn apps will be, but figured I'd manage with "just" twice what I have now. It'll be good enough for two years. (:

In my case, they want $400 over the subsidized price: $699 for the 32 GB 3GS.
I call BS on AT&T. I've been a loyal iPhone customer since the beginning, bought each phone the day it launched, and they pull THIS on me? No way in hell am I shelling out $700 for a phone.
I didn't want a cheaper iPhone, I want a cheaper iPhone plan.
That is the question, now isn't it.
The iPhone 3G cost a lot less than the iPhone... but after two years of paying for the higher 3G rates, it ended up costing a lot more.
So does anyone know what the 3G S will cot per month?

Still free and all, but I would've ate an extra 10 bucks to get it eariler. Unless this is just a mistake in the system, since same-day delivery for free is a special case for those who reserve?

Yeah I just finished placing an order for an iPhone 3G-S 16GB black. They claim it will be delivered to my door June 19th.
I had to refresh the browser constantly, as it kept timing out. You just have to be patient.

Did you really expect AT&T to sell you a new 3GS to you at the cheaper price, from the goodness of their own hearts? Next thing you'll be telling me is that AT&T is going to give us free tethering.

I would say this is more important because that are the people most likely to upgrade. If I had a 3G i would definately not upgrade for just a video camera.
The iPhone prior to 3G was a special agreement b/w apple and att.. the phone was not subsidized so the owners of original iPhone who never upgraded are all eligible to upgrade to the new iPhone 3Gs (or 3G) for the discounted price.
The iPhone 3G on the other hand was like any other device (smart phone) on att. It was subsidized by att, so you will need to wait at least 16 months into your 24 month contract to be eligible to upgrade to 3Gs at the discounted price. However, I think att is allowing everyone to upgrade to new iPhones at a reduced discount. I believe the price is $200 more than the actual discounted price... so $299 for 8Gb 3G, $399 for 16Gb 3Gs and $499 for 32Gb 3Gs...
Hope this helps clear some of your doubts...

So, now that the iPhone is getting close in features to every other smart-phone (but still sans front camera for video calls, and with only 3meg camera, when others get up to 12megs,) they are asking $700 for the 32megs version for existing AT&T users!?
Oh, and plus being locked into anoter 2 years contract with AT&T!
Is this a joke?
No another iPhone for me, at this price. I'll be looking at the new HTCs with Android. F... Apple and f... AT&T!

...for the deluge of whining from those disappointed about the lack of front video camera/black bezel/etc/etc.
FWIW, the 32Gb suits me just fine. And, in one of those spooky coincidenses, my six month old 16Gb has developed a h/ware problem which will need a replacement phone...

Anyone heard anything about the upgrade price on O2 (UK) yet? I can't see anything on the 02 or Apple UK website.
There is no UK upgrade price.
You have to pay off the remainder of your contract plus the standard price of a new iPhone if you want the 3G S.
The iPhone 3GS 16Gb will cost up to £184.98 depending on which tariff you take - the 32Gb up to £274.23

What shows you that? AT&T? Apple's iPhone page is not designed to tell when you can upgrade early.
You'll need to call AT&T.
apparently it is, since it gives out $200 step-up prices. hth

Since I bought the 3G on launch - it looks like I will again be eligible to an upgrade (at the subsidized price) in July.
Thoughts?
I was told 1 year from the time of my purchase of the 3G iphone, which was last year on the release date (camped out) so it will be July.
To be perfectly honest, if they are doing current 3G owners in this fashion this year, there is no telling what will emerge next year when the next version comes out.I might not even upgrade.

Odd. Just got my confirmation e-mail, and whereas throughout the ordering process shipping was marked for "Delivery by June 19," it now says "Ships June 19, Delivers June 24."
Still free and all, but I would've ate an extra 10 bucks to get it eariler. Unless this is just a mistake in the system, since same-day delivery for free is a special case for those who reserve?
The same thing happened to me. I'd love to find out which is true because I'd definitely upgrade the shipping, if possible.

SERIOUSLY. Apple has wireless-n enabled in every Mac, every Airport, every Time Capsule. Not happening in the new iPhone. So essentially, the 3G speeds will dwarf the AT&T Wi-Fi speeds, which means it's more taxing and expensive for AT&T since everyone will use 3G 7.2 now.
Could this mean AT&T will jack up the price of their data plan even more???

MAJOR FAIL from AT&T today. First the MMS and Tethering and now they aren't offering the subsidized price for current 3G owners. I'm no analyst and have no data to support this, but I am guessing at least 15-25% of current 3G owners would upgrade at the subsidized price. Horrible decision on their part and I really hope the sales of the 3GS kick them in the ass because of this decision along with their other blunders that were announced today.
Maybe I will take a trip to check out the Palm Pre in person.

Im quite prepared to pay for the new 3GS with O2 but if they dont offer it at a decent price I wouldnt expect to sign for a longer contract. They canny have it both ways, if its more like how the first phone was done then the phone will be mine without O2 subsidising it so why would i sign a longer contract? I will stay with O2 for the forseeable future but then the same problem arises if a new phone is released every summer!!!!!!!!!!

It is such a rip off that ATT makes us pay the extra to get the new phone AND makes us sign for 2 more years. If we sign for 2 more years we should get the discount like a new customer. No wonder no one likes them. As soon as I can pay my money to someone else I will.

The no tethering and MMS is VERY lame. But, why did people EVER think that AT&T owners were going to offer the new iPhone subsidized? We already got our subsidized price. As with ANY phone on ANY network, you only get one subsidized price per 2 years (if you sign a 2 yr contract).

i have to say it's great timing.
i'm leaving to europe this friday for 10 days. that means when i'm back i can upgrade to 3.0 because the most serious bugs would have shown up by then.
after that i'll wait another 6 weeks till the kinks have been worked out of the iPhone 3GS and i can simply upgrade. (does anybody know how much it costs to upgrade from a 2G that is 20 month old? i hope it's the normal price since the 2G wasn't subsidized.)
during the 6 weeks i can think if i want to get the 13"MBP with edu discount and an ipod touch:) now the 13" seems to be a worthy replacement for the 12"PB assuming the screen is as great as they say.
in september snow leopard is released. so in december i can upgrade to that since most bugs should be fixed or at least be known by then.
great WWDC i have to say.
for all the 3G owners in the US: what do you not understand about the word "subsidized" that you thought you get the upgrade to the 3GS for the same prize as new customers?

Wow, I can't believe all the complaining about the price of the upgrade. When you bought your 3G iphone last year, AT&T ponied up $400 for you to sign a new 2 year contract. That means that you agreed to keep your plan for 2 years. If you want to take advantage of the subsidy again, you have to sign a new 2 year contract. To do that, you would have to cancel your current plan, and pay whatever fees, then create a new account.
AT&T IS helping out loyal customers, but the deal is every 2 years. It is like that with any phone you buy from them, and they don't care about new stuff being released.

When I type my info (SS#, phone #, etc.) on Apple's iPhone upgrade page, it tells me the price ($299 for 32GB version), but when I go through to the final page, it tells me the following:
Is anyone else getting this when attempting to pre-order the new iPhone?

1. No Steven Jobs
2. Prices way too high for all the existing customers during a bad economy in the United States.
3. Lacking details about the reason for performance increase.
4. Lacking AT&T support for MMS and Tethering.
Overall the tone is not good for this release. For the short term, iPhone sales will not go up and RIMM will continue to post higher sales than the iPhone even with the new release. This will be because of the high upgrade fees to existing AT&T customers.
If you own Apple shares, I believe there will be a short term drop in stock very quickly.

I'm VERY dissapointed with this news.
i mean, seriously, the rest of apple's products had a madeover almost all the time but now they announcing an almost identical to iphone 3g?
that means we have nothing to boast about to the current iphone 3g owners :(
i know the specs are pretty good but somewhat there must be also a way ppl can differentiate and go 'niceeee an iphone 3G s'
but nooooooo, ppl will need to ' can i look at ur phone?' *turn it around and finally noticed the 32gb and drop dead laughing*'

I don't think these updates are REALLY worthy of being a new device.
The good: battery life, speed, video
The bad: Virtually USELESS compass application that will do nothing but take up a spot on your iPhone, a still-terrible camera, and AT&T.
This doesn't merit a separate device. It's lame, lame, lame. I've never been so disappointed by Apple.

did either of you go to the apple store's iPhone thing and put in your info? i also bought mine in July but my eligibility for subsidized price is December according to the site.
I called Apple and Called ATT about this situation.
I put my information in and it kept kicking me out.
Called Apple and they detoured me to ATT
On the phone with ATT and was told that the only way to get subsidized is waiting a full year from original purchase of the last iphone.
I also explained that I was told several months prior to the launch of this new iphone that if there was a new iphone that emerged that I would be eligible.
I have called almost 2 times per week to check to see if this information would/has changed and it has not until today.
So now im really pondering about just keeping my current 3G model which was just replaced with a new one April 4th and just wait until next year.
The way I see it is if they are sticking us faithful 3G owners with stipulations like this, then what will be the outcome next year?
The long of the short is that I can upgrade, after paying 18 bucks........
and cannot do this until July

You can count me as one of those 15-25% (I think higher) who would upgrade at a subsidized price. I never had an issue with the speed of my phone, and I almost never use the camera. Thus the features were nice but nothing I had to have. Now if it had a front facing video for video calls, that would have been more interesting. I was willing to upgrade only for the larger storage, but not at this price.

It would be the same for any otherphone at any other company. If I want to get the newest blackberry and I'm not eligible, they're going to charge me more. If I cancel my contract, pay the ETF and get the new customer price, sure I'll save a little. But that's business.
It has nothing to do with "showing respect to loyal iPhone customers", it's all about getting new ones, and getting hold-outs to upgrade, and then about getting new customers again, and then again.
If you're that angry about paying a "surcharge/tax" then don't upgrade, and wait til next year when you get the satisfaction of making fun of everyone that paid a bundle to upgrade early when iPhone 4: Alien Vs Predator comes out.

I work for AT&T at a corporate store and the internal memos basically say that if you have bought one of the original 3g iphones within 30 days you can either A) return it now and wait for the new ones, just paying a 10% restockign fee and buy the new one when it comes out, or B) if your still within 30 days on june 19th you can return it then and pay the 10% restock and get whatever model you want.
And furthermore, I dont know which company you could go to, and they would just hand you a brand new 700$ piece of equipment, that was just released, for free or with minimal penalties. I'm not overly loyal to my own company, but if you are one of the R-tards who think just because you pay your bill, ATT should eat a handful of money to get you the brand new phone you want, your loyalty would be much more appreciated somewhere else..I assure you.

Apple really let me down today. Yeah, the new iPhone 3GS is faster and can record video, but c'mon, those aren't good selling points.
You're right. They're not very good selling points. The fact that every other aspect of the iPhone still kicks ass on everything else out there is the best selling point. Apple's just cleaning up the things they didn't get right the first time around, but that doesn't diminish how great the rest of the phone is.
But whatever. I guess my advice to you is don't buy one. (Shouldn't be a hard decision. I have a feeling you weren't planning to anyway.)

To all the counter-whiners who say that 3G owners should suck it up on the higher price. The problem many of us have is that we have been iPhone owners since launch day of the original iPhone. When the 3G was launched, there was no higher price for an "early upgrade." We simply paid the subsidized price and were locked into a new 2 year contract. iPhone owners were treated no differently than first-time buyers of the iPhone 3G. What AT&T is doing here IS new for them, and based on the example they set last year, they ARE in fact screwing long-term iPhone owners.

I work for AT&T at a corporate store and the internal memos basically say that if you have bought one of the original 3g iphones within 30 days you can either A) return it now and wait for the new ones, just paying a 10% restockign fee and buy the new one when it comes out, or B) if your still within 30 days on june 19th you can return it then and pay the 10% restock and get whatever model you want.
any way for those who bought a 3G to haggle it down to subsidized price?

It's a two year contract. But I'm signing a new one. For all it's worth. They are getting 85 dollars from me a month. They pretty much made an additional year more on. So yeah...great job on them...they won't pony up $200 bucks and I won't give them an additional 900 bucks. Hmm...Att...how about it...200 bucks you make me save now...and I'll give you 900 bucks later..(NET PROFIT OF 700!!!).

I enjoyed watching Apple completely steal every single last bit of Palm's steam they had "built up" over the weekend.
Too bad the Pasco guy doing the demo couldn't tap into some of it though ;)
Really? This makes the Pre look much more inciting to me as a 3G owner and a 2G owner. They did not steal ANYTHING from Pre as they, to my knowledge, have refused to release the RAM and CPU information - as many claim it is the same CPU with a bit more memory and a better interface between the hardware and software via the newer 'chipset'.
The Pre allows for REAL multi-tasking, much faster CPU, more memory and the ability to ad 8 or 16gb through a nice feature called a MEMORY SLOT! Why doesn't Apple allow for that? As a dedicated Apple consumer with NO windows boxes in my house - and only two iPhones (2G and 3G) I am a bit underwhelmed and the Pre is positioned to take a small but size-able chunk from the Apple market share - the $99 3G makes for a kick-ass price-point but I would spend $200 more and get a phone with tethering, MMS/SMS, multi-tasking and a better camera in the Pre. If it will sync well with my Mac I am there as this was NOT an update that will make me sell the 3G or 2G to get this incrimental update - STILL without functions and features other phones (even those on the ATT network) have had for at LEAST 5-years! ATT is terrible and Apple is just as bad for hitching their wagon to this backwards and outdated telephony company...

so I'm confused ... which shipping do I have to pick to get it on the 19th ... hmmm ... and what's the point of the preorder if it's not guaranteed to be in stock?
When I pick the regular shipping it says: "Estimated Ship: Delivers by June 19th "
Yeah I'm confused, I picked standard shipping as well. On the main iPhone page it says 'Free Shipping - Delivered by June 19th'. But my confirmation email says SHIPPING June 19th, delivered by June 24th.
Hoping they'll sort this out and it'll arrive by June 19th.
I will get my price of $199.99 for the 16GB on Dec. 12th. It doesn't make sense the dates of upgrades is what I was saying. And someone that bought their iPhone 3G weeks after me gets theirs months before mine... doesn't add up on the dates.

Thats because last time Apple cost o2 an utter bomb. Doing early upgrades... just wait its not such a huge update anyway...
Upgrade
If you're already with us on Pay Monthly, you can upgrade to the new iPhone 3G when it's time to upgrade. It's usually the last month of your contract, but you can check at My O2.
If you've already got an iPhone, download the new iPhone OS 3.0 software from 17 June and you'll get over 100 new features. Find out more
So I will stick to my 3G and wait another 12 months. 3GS is not worth that money at all.

Well, after hearing all the news I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. I doubt there'll be any crazy lines at ATT on launch day. The product looks the same, and for now, they're not offering new contract pricing to existing users. The only "nice" useful feature I see over my 3G is the faster performance. Then again I'm not an iphone power user so I don't think that'll matter much.
Plus ATT is way off the ball with their MMS, 7.2MBPs 3G. This makes me want to sit out my remaining contract and hope a new carrier picks us the iPhone next year.

"[I was] On the phone with ATT and was told that the only way to get subsidized is waiting a full year from original purchase of the last iphone."
After 1 year of owning the 3G, you are eligible for the subsidized price. So, for those of us who bought the 3G on day 1, we just have to wait a little longer (a few weeks longer) to get the subsidized price.
For those who bought your 3G later than day 1, stop complaining -- your phone is less than a year old.

I totally agree. Anyone would like to save some extra money and AT&T is fleecing its customers. No one likes this situation, but this is the situation we made for ourselves when we signed the friggin contract. They told us, black & white, that we would not be eligible for subsidized pricing for another 18 months. This has nothing to do with being an AT&T Fanboy. We signed the contract allowing them to do this. Period.

Did you really expect AT&T to sell you a new 3GS to you at the cheaper price, from the goodness of their own hearts? Next thing you'll be telling me is that AT&T is going to give us free tethering.
Anyone who didn't expect higher pricing for 3G users is naive. As for me, I'm waiting on the 128GB iPhone.
Point being, they should bridge us day-1 people 1 freakin month and not penalize us. I can go into apple store on 7/12 and get one at 299... but that is outrageous to make me wait an extra month just because I am a day 1 person.

For the FIRST TIME ever, I will sit this one out - and, since I really can't have the top phone I may just have to switch to another carrier.

Wow... just wow.
Too bad YOU won't use the compass, but you're not thinking this through if you don't think devs will take advantage of this.
The camera will be worlds better. Or are you one of those people who think that cramming in more MP would make it better?
AT&T I'll give you. Not exactly a great performance by them today.
But overall, you've got an iphone with double the capacity, double the hardware speed, faster 3G, a higher quality camera, and video recording all for the price you were paying for a 3G this morning. The faster processor and more RAM alone will do *wonders* for the user experience. But like my sig says... some people will just never be happy.
This is completely retarded! People that have an iPhone already are being punished.
No, no you're not. You're being obligated to fulfill the contract you signed when AT&T gave you a subsidy that allowed you to get your iphone 3G at the discounted price you got it for. It works this way with every phone on every carrier. Get over it.

I believe the price is $200 more than the actual discounted price... so $299 for 8Gb 3G, $399 for 16Gb 3Gs and $499 for 32Gb 3Gs...
I am looking at the "Introducing the next iPhone" email I got directly from Apple. It differs from what you said here.
"For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."

Right, because it wasn't subsidized when you bought it. And how many improvements have been made since then?
And when you paid the upgrade price for the 3g, you signed a new deal. There was no "extra" upgrade price because you paid an ungodly amount to begin with, so why not get you to part with an additional $200, then lock you in for another $85/month for two more years?
You didn't have to upgrade last year, you just saw a better phone for a lower price and now you're locked in. At&t/Apple win, customers complain about getting screwed and pay anyway.
Do you complain when every new computer or iPod comes out too, demanding a lower price on a new one?

One more time for you guys who just can't get it....2G was unsubsidized, even though we locked in to ATT for 2 years. 3G was subsidized, and ATT tore up our old 2 year committment for a new one.
Pricing for 3GS is exactly what I expected, given that the 3G was subsidized. And since the 3GS is no great leap, I can wait the extra month and save the $200. Or, just wait until next year.

It's the same size, no new cases. It's got a huge anchor around its neck though... AT&T
No tethering (although other phones with AT&T can) and no MMS (although other phones on AT&T can). Well, actually the MMS is planned for 'Summer'.
The biggest threat to the iPhone isn't RIM or Palm. It's turning out to be AT&T!? My wife is already thinking of ditching her iPhone and going back to Verizon.
AT&T also 'magically' switched her to email billing and she never got the invoice or the statement in the mail. She was pissed. They told her last month that she told them to do it. Then that they have her 'straightened out'. Same thing this month. The agent 'misinformed her' (LIED?) last month about getting her 'straightened out' and she had to go in person to put it back. All this last bit happened on a highway doing over 70MPH. The 'agent' (brainless twit) demanded that she give them her credit card number over the phone and wouldn't hold on while she stopped the car (there was no shoulder to stop on in that stretch) and found her card. Then when the in person demand popped up, she said that if they could change her to email billing without her authorization then they could bloody well change it back WITH her authorization. Nope, the agent wasn't budging... She had to hang up on the idiot. She was so steamed that as soon as we got in town and dumped our luggage, it was off to the AT&T store...

What I find most frustrating is the seemingly random application of "full upgrade pricing" dates. I bought my 3G (and original) iPhone on launch day, yet I'm not available to upgrade until 3/13/2010. Why? Many others say they are eligible on July 12, others in December, etc. This makes no sense and should be addressed sooner rather than later.
But more importantly, if I have to wait all the way until March next year to get the upgrade pricing, I will just wait 3 extra months and get the next generation iPhone and skip this one. So, in an effort to get an extra $200 from a loyal customer, they are generating ill will *AND* losing over $600 in the process. How is that?
I currently pay for 3 AT&T phones - my 3G iPhone, my wife's original iPhone, and my son's Samsung something. When I get a new phone my wife gets the 3G and my son gets the original. So, I spend $300 on hardware, wife's plan goes up $10 a month and son gets a $20 data plan. $660 (plus all of the various upgrade fees and add-ons they kill you with) out the window so they can get attempt to get an extra $200.
It really blows my mind they could be so short sighted.

T-Mobile offers FREE tethering with their data packages if your package is over $60 with the data package add-on. You ahve to ask but many of the phones will act as a modem at no charge through T-Mobile but you need to call and ask. I did that with a 2G iPhone I unlocked and they allowed for NO CHARGE tethering. They gave me a free SIM CARD and even set-up the data connections on the phone as well as made for some iPhone ATT specific features to work on the T-Mobile network. It was NOT a corporate store but an independent T-Mobile only store.
Why would I expect ATT to offer what other companies offer? Because they might want to compete! I do not understand why Boost can offer $50 for unlimited voice/data/messaging AND no cost GPS and AGPS maps - you read right, just $50! How can they offer that while ATT charges more than $150 plus tax for a like plan!
I understand cell service and maintenance is hefty - but with more cell phones than land-lines by an ENORMOUS MARGIN - they can offer a better product at a lower price. Boost does, Virgin Mobile does and Cricket can - although I know nothing about Cricket - only T-Mobile, Boost and Virgin.
ATT offers NOTHING that Boost does not offer - and they charge more than 2x their current rates! Boost even LEASES the cell time from ALL major GSM and IDEN towers and they STILL turn a profit and offer great support from all the opinions I had read.
ATT is greedy and they have milked the iPhone and the associated data and message plans to the point that as a customer I will look elsewhere as ATT has terrible service in almost ANY area and the customer support blows - yet Apple - an otherwise great company, decided to lie in bed with a terrible company who refuses to upgrade many towers to 3G when Verizon and even Sprint have more 3G-esq towers throughout the lower-48. Oh well.

Existing iPhone 3G owners will have to pay approximately $200 over subsidized pricing to upgrade:

Keep in mind that there are numerous posts on Craigslist every day that say "we buy iPhone3Gs for $200" and they turn around and sell them on eBay for $400. I'm not sure who buys them for $400, but if you look at eBay, people keep buying them. (keep in mind that the unsubsidized iPhone3G was like $600) I will probably buy the new 3G S from Apple and then sell my old phone on eBay.

GET REAL. ATT FANBOY.
If you're signing a NEW 2 year contract, I see no reason why you shouldn't get the 199/299 pricing. That's the deal as I see it, as long as you pay the ETF on any current plan that you have. If you're a new customer, then you should go have a talk with them and tell them you want the fully subsidized price.
Also, I'm not an ATT fanboy. I would love for the iPhone to not be exclusive, so that other carriers could create competitive pricing and offer better services. I am, however, a fan of common sense, and appreciate it when people use it.

AT&T!

That's why 'locked phones' should be outlawed! It does no one any favors. AT&T 'extended' my upgrade date when I had my Treo by 4 months! If it wasn't for the investment that I have with AT&T already, I'd buy an unlocked Pre (is there such a thing yet?) or a Blackberry and ditch AT&T. Well, and they have my phone number too!

When I just ordered the new iPhone it had me pick out the phone I wanted, log in using my Apple ID and then it told me to go to the SoHo store on the 19th and complete the purchase with an Orange Shirt. The price it gave me was $299 for the 32gb. I bought the 3G last July so not sure if this is a screwup.

Now they want $699 from me and i don't understand why some people with iPhone 3G can get it for $499. What did THEY do that gets them this phone for $499 that is different from me?

Highly disappointed in the technicalities involving AT&T.
I'm glad to see Nike+, disappointed in the lack of wireless n, and so extremely irritated that existing iPhone 3G customers can't upgrade to the 3GS for the contract prices. Plus, AT&T is slacking, as shown, on MMS and tethering. I'm frustrated with Apple for allowing all of these hitches with AT&T. It's bollox.
The upgrade to 3GS is not even CLOSE to being worth $599/$699 or the $417/$517 on 12/12/09.

I show I can upgrade 7/15/09.....
I paid the unsubsidized price for the iPhone 3G and I am being offered the following prices:
$499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
Based on your logic; mine wasn't susidized so why am I having to pay more?

Wow, I can't believe all the complaining about the price of the upgrade. When you bought your 3G iphone last year, AT&T ponied up $400 for you to sign a new 2 year contract. That means that you agreed to keep your plan for 2 years. If you want to take advantage of the subsidy again, you have to sign a new 2 year contract. To do that, you would have to cancel your current plan, and pay whatever fees, then create a new account.
AT&T IS helping out loyal customers, but the deal is every 2 years. It is like that with any phone you buy from them, and they don't care about new stuff being released.
yeah but we are keeping the plan just getting the new phone. and they make us commit to a new 2 year contract any way while we pay the higher price

how did you swing this? I got my 3g on launch day and it shows that i will only be able to get one for $399 upgrade pricing (16gig). How did you get the $299 (32gb im assuming) pricing on a 3g upgrade?
It looks like we're in the midst of a huge pricing confusion debacle. Remember quickly now that it has not yet been 1 year since you bought the 3G.
To add insult to injury it seems the online ordering system can not differentiate between contract status across lines on a family plan. It seems to be confusing my terms for my iPhone line with my terms for my second line.
I'm so shocked that AT&T's billing system is a confusing mess </sarcasm>

I talked to Apple and the csr said that free shipping is standard and it will get shipped on the 19th, not delivered on the 19th.
...so I asked about the pickup option and is the availability guaranteed and she wasn't sure about it, but said that there should be one waiting for me at the Apple Store if I preorder.
This is a complete BS. I would rather pay a little more and have it on the 19th, but it seems that no matter which option I pick, it will only get shipped on the 19th and not delivered... and now i don't know what to do.

Still terrible camera? Have you seen the camera or it's results? It's appears better than the camera on the previous iPhones (3.2MP vs 2MP), and comparable to other Smart Phone cameras on the market, can do video (versus none), and has auto-focus (versus none). The iPhone is not designed to replace a Nikon D5000. It is a Phone / Music Player / Gaming Device / Video Device / Digital Tape Recorder / etc. Can your Nikon play music? Can your Canon play a racing game? Can your Pentax make phone calls? And ... can it do it for $299-399? Come on people, stop complaining about the iPhone not replacing the Wii/Nikon/Sony/Mac/etc all in one shot for $99 bucks. If you don't like the update, don;t buy it!!

Right, because it wasn't subsidized when you bought it.
Non-sequitur.
It is irrelevant whether the original iPhone was subsidized. Subsidy pricing with carriers is triggered by the amount of time left in your contract rather than whether your previous handset was subsidized. AT&T let iPhone owners upgrade with the subsidy last year, regardless of the fact that only 12 months of the existing contract had elapsed.
Since it seems that AT&T is changing the game this time around, those of us who bought early last year are going to feel short-changed. Deal with it...
If 3G owners are indeed allowed to get the subsidized price in July as some are suggesting, then admittedly, my gripes will have little merit.

I'm totally stoked that the existing 3G owners can't get the cheap upgrade price. That must be why I'm getting mine by the 19th!!!! Shorter lines.
Stop your incessant whining and take a basic math or business class. Why would AT&T pay several hundred dollars for you to upgrade at a discount when you already have a contract? It seems to me they have missed the ball a little here with the pricing, especially in the UK.
Apple push their luck making us pay for the phone to begin with because you generally get phones for free on contracts.
Having already bought the original iPhone, then upgraded to the 3G you would think they would offer current iphone users the option to upgrade and just extend your contract again paying a sum of £100+ or so like we did with the 3G and capture all the sales for those like myself and many others on here who would instantly upgrade. What they are going to find is most of us will have to sit this update out and like myself go a few months without a contract and possibly leave to another carrier and another phone?
It will be interesting to see what's actually in the phone tech wise and how much it costs them to make it because the pricing is a little off when you consider the reductions in Mac's and the cheap upgrade of snow leopard it's a little out of place.

Point being, they should bridge us day-1 people 1 freakin month and not penalize us. I can go into apple store on 7/12 and get one at 299... but that is outrageous to make me wait an extra month just because I am a day 1 person.
If you were a day 30 person, you'd have to wait even longer. So you're first in line of the 3G buyers.

In a similar situation - I can't upgrade until end of the summer, but my spouse can upgrade to now at the lower price. Can I swap phones and SIM cards if the upgrade originates with her line?

when i get home from work i am going to call and ask if it's 12 or 18 (or 24) months from buying the 3G. there's really no reason i should be at 12/15, others march or july 2010, and some early adopters (that bought the 3G the first week like i did) are 7/15.
So did anyone actually get the $499 price for 32 GB on June 19? Or is it either $299 or $699? I'm still confused.

no one got 699. it's all 499. i got that on the site.
